LD36 — Ancient Technology

Rolling Time by austintradr 2016-08-30T01:14:00

This was a great idea for a game; I really enjoyed playing this. I liked how the levels wrapped to add replay value, and I though the particles were a nice touch. I didn't like how there wasn't any sort of save or speed selector, because the first level on slow does get old pretty quickly.

This might be a little nit-picky, but I don't honestly think it looks good when sprites are made larger without actually adding detail, like how the meteors are resized to be really large.

All-in-all this is a really fun game.

I had fun playing this game, although it was a bit short.

The art style was really nice. I liked the music and the sounds. Very good platformer physics, they weren't floaty or unresponsive, but also weren't too fast. I'm assuming that there isn't anything you have to do after you find the diamonds, because I couldn't find anything else and the house seems just for decoration. On a similar note, the house is really primitive looking and doesn't have much detail. If it wasn't for the roof and the stuff in the window I wouldn't be able to tell it's a house.

Also, I'm not quite sure how "cat searching for diamonds" fits in with the theme, but other than that it's a good game.

Curse of the golden skull by Jack Slinger 2016-08-30T01:28:00

The level design in this game is great. I like how you have to backtrack sometimes after releasing/depressing buttons. The graphics were nice, and I though the music choice really fit the game.

However, the controls felt really floaty and unresponive. I had a hard time platforming with how slowly you move. It also looked a bit weird without a jump sprite. It looks like you're just walking on air.

Overall it's a good game.

Kukulkan's Phantom by CMangas 2016-08-30T18:22:00

The idea of making a game in the style of a Game Boy game is a really cool idea. I thoroughly enjoyed playing this game and I'm proud to say that I finished it.

It was cool that there was a seperate cursor to denote actions that you could do, but for me my normal cursor didn't disappear, which made it look kind of weird. The graphics were good, I liked the sounds, the music fit, and the gameplay was great. I also thought it was a nice addition that you had to back-track to find the answer to the J puzzle.

There isn't really anything bad that I can think of for this game, but it was sort of short. I understand that you had to make this game in a really small time period though.

Also, there is a bug that the tiles don't snap into place correctely in the tile matching puzzle. They're like 1 or 2 pixels off, but it bothers me a bit.

Rampage of Technology by kokiriandco 2016-08-30T19:00:00

Alright so overall I thought this game was cool, but it was hard to get around some aspects to actually enjoy it. I didn't end up finishing it.

The graphics and art were nice, and really fit the setting of the game. The music was good, but got old after hearing it 12 times. The gameplay was good, but there were parts of it that made it hard to enjoy. Also, the acceleration of the cassete and CD player made it a bit hard to platform without speeding past single blocks in the air. I often died because precision was so hard. And when you break the TVs with Nokia, it doesn't have any sort of animation or sprite, it just dissapears, so that looked pretty bad. The swinging mechanic was really limited in motion and was way to fast to be very useful. The text dissapeared to fast sometimes in the opening cutscene too.

There's also a bug that causes the running animation to not activate 90% of the time, and when it does it does it randomly when doing something else.

OLDNYUZ by repstyle 2016-08-30T14:21:00

So I played it for a while, and I thought it was really fun. The font fit, the graphics were good, the sound was good, the font choice was on-point, it was a great game. I also liked how the level/world was designed.

Although it is an enjoyable game, I do have some things I didn't like. First of all, the borderless window is a bit annoying. I had to move my taskbar just to play the game.

I'm assuming the game keeps playing forever, but the "Global Trend Knowledge" bar did make me think that it's just a really long game.

Asteroid Wars by leondryaso 2016-08-30T18:03:00

Ohhhhhh there's so much I have to say about this game!

First of all it's definately my favorite so far out of all the games I've played, including mine. And it's the first game I've played after I've gotten the full experience out of it. I made it to level 13 before I had to stop myself from continuing, or I'd be playing it all day.

The CRT effect is fantastic, it really fits the game and just looks flat out amazing. The screen shaking is really good too. The music and sounds were great and substantially added to the game and made it a better experience. The shop was good too, although I think it could have had some more options or had more stages on the current ones. It didn't take long for me to max out my ship.

One of the only things I disliked about this game was how easy it was. I was able to survive extremely easily after the second level when I got the triple laser. I feel that if you had either added some more options in the shop and/or made things more expensive it would have lengthened the game a bit.

Also, this is a bit of a nitpick, but it bothered me a little that the screen didn't wrap. In the original Asteroids, when you went past an edge of the screen, you showed up on the other side. I do understand, however, that this would've been somewhat hard to achieve successfully because of the asteroids randomly spawning past the borders to keep the game going.

In the end I thought this game was fantastic in all aspects and I really enjoyed playing it. It's also nice to see a fellow Java developer doing Ludum Dare. :)

La ciudad que ocultaba by Capitals 2016-08-30T13:59:00

I'm not sure whether I liked this game or not. I though the concept was great! The idea of controlling and building up a city without completely copying Sim City.

But I felt that the camera was hard to use, so the text above the cards that are layed down was really hard to read. This might just be me, but I felt that the UI font was also pretty hard to read. The part that really bothers me though is that the instructions are a bit unclear. I'm still not completely sure how it works, but that you're raising some stats that do stuff I'm not told about. I found myself slapping cards on random tiles and hoping it did something. I'm also still not sure why tiles dissapear after a little while.

I didn't end up completing it, but that's just because I realized that would take a really long time. I'm not against this, as I think I got the full experience enough to judge it, but it would have been nice to have the option to finish it within like 5-10 minutes.

Also, there's a bug where if you zoom in all the way it's possible to come out of the bottom of the island.

MES by RubiksJr 2016-08-30T18:44:00

@Sanart Thanks for the comment, I fixed the bug. The big guy should move towards you normally now. :)

MES by RubiksJr 2016-08-30T20:31:00

@unpronounceable Yeah there were a bunch of features I had planned for the top bar, but I had to scrap most of them.

And I'm not sure about your reloading issue, I haven't had that issue my self and I haven't heard of other people having it. Sorry.

MES by RubiksJr 2016-08-30T23:58:00

@metalhaze

Thanks for the comment! I actually used the original NES color palette for this game, so I can see how the colors were somewhat jarring. I basically just used certain colors because they had more shades, just like the original game devs.

And yes, at this point I definitely wish I had though of adding some sort of cooldown meter for the reload.

Hammer Stone by 9.ar7k 2016-08-30T20:28:00

Not much to say about this game, but I liked it.

The graphics were nice. I really liked the art style. The music was good, but repetitive. The core mechanics were cool, and the whole "you move slower and jump less high" thing with the rocks is cool.

I'm assuming the tree is a barrier on purpose and you didn't have time to make anything past that, because I have no idea how to get past there.

There's a bug that when you die the green rock shows up below your health bar.

Hammer Stone by 9.ar7k 2016-08-30T20:28:00

Oh and the rock switching doesn't work for me.

Burning light by GFM 2016-08-30T19:10:00

I'm sorry that you weren't able to complete it, but from the looks of this game it probably would have been awesome. The art was really good, and the subtle movement of the islands in the background is really cool. The concept is nice too. The idea of going around and reflecting light seems really fun.

Mead Boy by blubberquark 2016-08-30T17:32:00

Cool game. I liked the dithering effect on the map, and I thought the burning-down-houses aspect was a bit obnoxious at times but was a nice addition. It's a really great idea to make unresponsiveness and floatyness a game mechanic, and it added some difficulty to an otherwise easy game. I thought the graphics were good, and I liked the food mechanic as well. I'm not sure what the gold was for though, but it was probably for score and I just didn't notice.

Boxatons by Avon 2016-08-30T14:38:00

This game was absolutely fantastic! I had so much fun playing it! There isn't much you can improve on this game, other than that it was a bit short, but time constraints, I get it. The controls are a bit weird though if you're using the keyboard, but the option to use the mouse is nice.

Hoard by gelisam 2018-08-15T02:53:36Z

Your game was actually really fun! There were a few things like the rotation being a bit slow and the window being too big for my screen, but overall I really enjoyed playing your game!

Hoard by gelisam 2018-08-19T01:37:21Z

@gelisam Oof my bad. I didn't realize that you could hold shift to make it go faster. Sorry.

Profit Margins by RubiksJr 2018-08-15T10:59:22Z

@teo-miklethun Definitely a bug. Not sure how that happened, but then again 2am math doesn't always work right. I'll try to look into it when I can. Thanks!

Burger Or Poop by NOWICU 2018-08-15T02:44:53Z

The concept of your game is awesome, but I feel like it could've used a bit more polish. The idea of your trail only being cleared after reaching a goal is a really cool mechanic, and I really loved the music. The only big issue with your game is the controls. There was a small delay between pressing a key and your character responding to it that made it *just* too difficult to survive long enough to get to the next goal. I would also lower the speed a bit; the regular difficulty felt a bit fast.
