LD39 — Running out of Power

Crystals Of Power by Avon 2017-08-09T23:00:47Z

Great game! The cut scenes were great and created a really good mood for the game. The art was good, however I will say that the shield perhaps should have been properly modelled so that the player knows that it only helps in front of them, and so they can see the projectiles bouncing off it. That said once you got used to it the game was really fun. Unfortunately, the game seemed to have it wrong in terms of difficulty. The fact that the first level was incredibly difficult and took me multiple attempts to complete while the later levels could be completed first try with relative ease felt wrong. The projectile bouncing was fun but perhaps should have been introduced later in the game. Considering you only worked on this for 72 hours, the game is great.

Firepower by akai_0okami 2017-08-03T00:24:14Z

The game looks good but either I was missing something or level 3 (I think...) was virtually impossible. The former is not unlikely but I think it perhaps points to the game being too finely balanced to be accessible. The lack of an obvious restart button could also be infuriating at times as it lead to being stuck and having to refresh the page and lose my progress.

That said, the game was actually quite fun and fit the theme well, it just lacked polish in some areas.

**Edit**: On a second attempt I just managed to complete the game, given that there are only four levels I suppose the difficulty curve may be justified, however I still think that it is perhaps too difficult. The close timing may be good for hidden parts of a game, but the average user may find it too difficult for the main game (or maybe I'm just not as skilled as I think I am).

That said I did come back so you must have done something right...

Archimedes 2029 by Brickkid512 2017-08-22T15:06:22Z

The game was very fun, especially the dodging/shooting of the rockets, but I felt that it lacked a clear goal to work towards. I think it may also have been good to add more variety to the environment as you explore further out. The graphics and music were great and fit together well, however the text on the start screen was difficult to read on top of the stars.

You seem to have made the jump action work only when the space key is released instead of when it is pressed, which made it feel unresponsive, but it shouldn't be a difficult fix.

The game is a realluy good starting point, I think it just needs to be polished a bit more.

My Dream by Local Minimum 2017-08-04T19:58:34Z

This was certainly an interesting game, and a nice change in pace from most of the other Ludum Dare games I've marked so far.

It wasn't entirely clear exactly what to do initially, but I think I got the hang of it.

I'm not sure whether I liked that you had to play multiple times to build up a picture of the whole story, but it was interesting.

Solar Miner by mrboxbox 2017-08-04T23:10:59Z

Great game entry. The pixel graphics looked good but at lower speeds they could get a bit disorientating because it could feel as though the screen were flashing or changing significantly as you moved slowly. The music was great and didn't feel too repetitive.

At first I found the movement a bit odd but I became accustomed to it towards the end. I will say that perhaps the camera should have been zoomed out a bit more, because often enemies would shoot while I couldn't see them, and the rocket launcher was difficult to fire and aim without taking damage yourself because the explosion took up so much of the screen, but maybe that was part of it's challenge.

Maybe I'm just nitpicking, but the bounce off the rocks did feel a little too much. It made collisions seem less important than they were because they didn't 'crunch'.

Overall though, it was a very fun game.

Star Slammer by AlexHoratio 2017-08-06T21:36:01Z

This game has an interesting idea, but a few major flaws. Firstly, I'm fairly certain that it actually took more energy to ram a star and collect all of it's energy than you actually gained by doing so, making the aim of the game effectively pointless. This shouldn't be a difficult fix, but it makes the game quite annoying at the moment.

Additionally, the fact that everything in the game is orange - and worse, most of it is the same shade - it was difficult to tell what was good and what was bad - making the game feel busy and confusing. The power points should be a different colour to the laser shots, which should also be different colours and/or shapes to the enemy shots.

That said, the game was quite fun, but it needs some balancing and polish.

Electronic Supremacy by damdoshi 2017-08-06T21:11:11Z

The idea for the game was great, and it's quite fun to play (once you work out how), however I think it does end up looking quite busy especially with the full tile animated wires that have to be connected to everything (the walls, in particular, should probably be allowed to be placed away from a wire). The art doesn't look bad, but the density of it in the game under normal use was too much. The movement controls didn't feel entirely suited to the game either, I feel like WASD to look around would be easier and less confusing.

I will also say that the game crashed while I was playing it, cutting my game short.

The game was a good idea, but it needs polishing to reach the heights of what is possible with it.

Orbiting Home by Zeknir 2017-08-01T23:28:59Z

This was a great game, especially considering the amount of time you had. I really loved the orbiting physics mechanic, it was really fun, if a little difficult to find the correct balance. I think the combat system might have worked better with simplified physics, but I'm not entirely sure. That said, the graphics were great and the game was really fun.

Save The Day ! by juan 2017-08-04T17:16:55Z

This was a simple but fun game with some great visuals - well done on those. However, I did notice that the amount I'd move after pressing W or S was often inconsistent, sometimes moving one row, as I'd expect, but sometimes, even after a light tap, I'd move two rows into the path of an asteroid. Maybe I just have poor reaction times, but I think that perhaps the time delay before moving another time should be increased?

That said, the graphics were great and the intro scene was fun. The mechanics were fun too.

Flappy Jet by Henry Sneed 2017-08-04T19:22:47Z

The game has a great idea, and in general work quite well, however I felt that the difficulty of some of the obstacles was bit high due to the size of the hit boxes being largely unknown and it was difficult to know what parts were safe to touch and what parts were not. Also, there seemed to be no proper death screen when you hit the sides, only when you hit the obstacles, which made the game hang.

Trap in the dark by azziliz 2017-08-04T20:44:06Z

The game was fun, I liked the idea, however it didn't work properly in Google Chrome (I couldn't see the player move) and I had to use Microsoft Edge instead. Procedurally generated levels is impressive though.

Last Hyperjump by Christoffer Krakou 2017-08-06T21:49:30Z

Maybe I was missing something, but the game seemed too short and easy, I had got to the end goal within about 30 seconds and had had no reason to fire the laser cutters. I feel like the game was missing something and didn't feel quite finished. The laser effects felt good, but there was no reason to use them. I feel like the game needed enemies or perhaps the asteroids should have moved faster to make you need to use the lasers to destroy them before they hit you.
