LD29 — Beneath the Surface

Under Google by mustaine 2015-08-26T12:38:00

Don't forget to add a download version, because none of the web ones work: "Error launching Unity web player"

Funny game, but when I type "=" it writes "0"

Cat Basket by Pohka 2017-12-24T11:42:43Z

Nice game, but really buggy. Some thoughts:

- Provide a download version because the game can be really laggy on older systems - I played the game twice and made several traversals of the level, but I'm always stuck at one kitten left. This might be a bug - Sometimes I get stuck in walls - Sometimes bullets glitch through walls

I really like the concept, so I'd love to see a more polished post-LD version

Big Pockets by Jeremy Ryan 2017-12-26T15:24:34Z

The pixel art animation are really, really good!

The Challenge by DWulff 2017-12-26T15:14:42Z

I love the mechanic that you can misuse the controls (wall jump + dash) to climb up walls. This mechanic definitely deserves a full game. The changing level the more you progress is a nice concept too, but I didn't manage to get to one of the orbs though so I can't judge if you did it well. The level definitely has not enough contrast and is very hard to read, which made me fall into the void a few times.

LD45 — Start with nothing

Awesome game, but please fix the word detection. It works fine at the beginning, but the more letters there are the harder it gets to recognize them. I closed the tab with ~110 words after having failed to recognize "finish" for a while.

Loved it. You'll probably already know, but it's quite easy to cheese the game and get through it in a boring way. Also the Linux version does not work for me: the process simply eats up a core without doing anything. I had to kill the application to stop it.

@pune007 @bgsulz Thanks for the feedback! There are not many functions in one key, it's just that it can be described in many different ways. That's the downside of having a mechanic one cannot put into words … (I really tried, so if you got a better description please tell!)

The movement indeed is a bit sluggy (and glitchy if you try to move fast nevertheless), but we didn't have time to make this right. Same for the sound, we had to a lot of cut corners there.

Originally, we had even more "loops" and looping mechanics in the game, but they eventually got cut out because they had some game design issues and gameplay > theme.

@aran-ink The counter is definitively a good idea. If this was a full game, maybe some path indications on the ground would be nice to have as well. The animation always has the same length. But because tiles are wider than tall due to perspective the movement appears slower in one direction.

@maxmitchell The idea was to make the first levels tutorial-esque enough to learn the game (like in Portal). But it sadly didn't fully work out. I'm happy that most players still get the mechanics sooner or later and that no one has reported a rage quit

@forgeronstudio That level is my favourite too! I really wanted to build another level with the same idea but in bigger. Sadly there was not enough time (I tried but in the end it was solvable with less clones).

@theaxe316 We don't plan on expanding this post game jam at the moment. But the game mechanic isn't patented, so feel free to build your own game on this idea.

Stuck in a portal by YANIV 2020-10-06T21:55:11Z

Cool game. A level selection would be cool though to give the possibility to skip the level when stuck. Especially in Jam games, where there's not the time to polish each level until it's perfect. The splash when you die is really helpful for placing the portal better the next time.

One thing I found a bit frustrating is that the portals are shot in a line, and when there's an obstacle the portal will be built at the wrong position. I understand why you can't shoot portals around corners, but I'd prefer it to not shoot at all if it won't hit the correct place.

Bloop by notpresident35 2020-10-06T22:04:11Z

Please export the game for Linux as well. ~~It looks pretty cool, but I can't play it because the Windows version does not have input working under Wine~~ got it to work with Wine, Linux build would be cool nevertheless.

The loopy control is an interesting concept. It's pretty fun once you figure out how to get from a to b while running in circles (reminds me a bit of Cobalt in some way). However, I don't like changing the rotation direction when colliding with the walls. It effectively flips everything around and is super confusing. I also had a hard time getting off the wall once stuck in it. Some manual control for changing the direction would be much preferred.

I also didn't quite like the shooting. Having to slow down to shoot is not snappy enough. By the time I was finally shooting, the enemy was already 10° behind me.

Props for making a whole tutorial

Loopclear by HardCodeD 2020-10-06T23:01:21Z

Wow, that was a lot of content! Only the "jump and run" part was pretty frustrating. The controls are pretty imprecise and starting over and over again each time is rather annoying.

Um, what am I supposed to do? Some gameplay instructions and controls on this page would help a lot.

Haka the Robber by Herman Chau 2018-04-30T17:35:10Z

Finally I've found a game that has procedural world generation too! This is an awesome entry, the only thing I'm missing there is a readable font and an explanation what the items actually do. Without, the items are pretty much useless.

It's really impressive how deep the combat/stealth mechanics are through crouching. By the way, it is possible that a mistake results in certain death even with full hearts. This feels quite unfair, but the rest is just hard and challenging and fun.

Haka the Robber by Herman Chau 2018-05-01T12:11:27Z

@Herman Chau You don't have to wait until judging is over to make changes to your game. You only have to state changes and make sure the original version is still available. Apart from that, you are free to upload an improved version of your game additionally.

Dungeon Drifter -- A roguelike racing game by Triceraptodactyl 2018-04-24T14:21:07Z

@honey @YinYin Thank you both for your feedback. We tried to not instakill on walls, but due to technical problems it didn't feel good and we didn't have the time to fix it. But I at least made the rocks in the rooms do some damage and it is a lot better (they still hit hard though). The coins on the corner are a thing I had already fixed, but apparently I was off by one in the bounds . Going faster in long rooms are a great idea and only four lines of code, so I added it. I also made most of the enemies bigger and less harmful and now even I can easily finish the game.

We tried out having the brake recharge, but I commented it out since it lead to a different play style than intended. The brake is meant to rescue you when you are getting too close to the walls. But when the brake was recharging, you could easily stop the car in the room and then kill all the mobs and it would recharge enough until the next room. I increased the time from 15 to 20 seconds, which is double the amount I usually need to finish the game. The only place where you really need the brake is to access badly placed coins.

The changes mentioned above are not published yet. We'll decide which of them are bug fixes/updates to the game and which belong to a Post-LD version soon and then upload it.

Straight to the king: Real-time Chess by BearDroid 2018-04-30T16:43:04Z

It works on Linux using wine for me, but I couldn't really try it out due to the controls. Some basic key mapping and the possibility to play on one keyboard would really help. Btw, 135MiB for a jam game is quite a lot.
