LD29 — Beneath the Surface

The game looks really good. Like tremendously. The particles , the style is great. Movement is a little to hard to work with. The biggest gripe I have with the game though is the fact that it was not intuitive what the game was about. I understand it was a puzzle game of sorts, but it still was too hard because it wasn't responsive enough. For instance, the platform takes too long to raise so I had no idea what to do. Kinda don't see how the game follows the theme too much.

Great job. You used LibGDX too! The movement is great, love the art and the animations. It seems like its a really large map. It seems like a standard puzzle platforming game. However, I really didn't get to try to the lock mechanic because I couldn't get far enough (I'm bad at platformers, but it felt a little tough; glad you put save points). Big issue is the level design; should make accomplishments at the beginning to give player a sense of progress as well as get a feel for the obstacle difficulty. The mood was set with the art, but some audio would've made it better! Sound is actually really important in a game, I'm realizing. Great job though!

Depth by Calahagus 2014-04-28T03:33:00

Great artwork and background music. The intro screen is what got me interested. The concept fits with the theme and is pretty unique. However, the game itself is too difficult to play. The mashing is interesting, but to keep mashing is a little too difficult and its hard to get feedback for the movement of the character and where to progress. Great job though!

Beneath the Surface by clearlyspam23 2014-04-28T03:42:00

Hi John :). Great job; especially since you got this running off your own physics. You probably should add that in your comment, I think; getting an idea of what the maker did frames the grading I think. Like the wall jumping a lot. Kinda hard to tell what the power ups do. Graphics are great for a programmer, and audio is pretty fitting. The jump is a little too high pitched for my liking though. I think some background music/sound effects of a cave of something would have improved the mood a bit, but I'm not blaming you for that. Great job John! Thanks for encouraging me to participate too!

Kappa cat by cinnamonmelonpig 2014-04-28T03:03:00

I liked the humor on the start page. And the powe rup was cool. What I really liked was the lighting and the particle effects. Having the bubbles in the background, the light and the god rays coming down from the top were cool touches, and the background changing color too. Liked the art style, but maybe a little contrast between objects. The music tried to capture the aquatic idea, but it was offsync, so it started to sound a little bothersome :(. The movement felt good. Liked it!

The Spyware Who Loved Me by andrewkennedy 2014-04-28T02:57:00

I liked the concept. Had some gripes with the controls, especially the holding down; it was core but made it somewhat hard to control. Loved the background animation and the data line effects, and clever use of the theme. Audio wasn't to my liking. Great job!

Try and get the web version running next time! I think web games will get a lot more visibility than the other ones. The last image was really what captured me to try this game. It looked really cool. The game was a little hard to control, but the lighting effects are really cool. The map was a little too dark; I get that was the intent, but navigation was a little to hard. Also corridors were a little too small but that's more of a personal preference. Sound effects were good, but ambiance and background music would make it really interesting. Great job on the game!

Atomicle - LostAutumn.net by AutumnGuy 2014-04-28T03:27:00

Great game overall! The movement is really fluid, and the concept is really interesting and innovative. It's pretty fun to play, and it gets really tough. Its a little to hard to control the game. Loved the simplistic art style and cleanness of the animations. The sound effects are great and the music was good. I feel like the mood was a little different than expected; expected a little techno/sciency feel to it. Great job!

I really like the mechanic, and the concept was really cool. Movement was a little slow which made it a little difficult. The game looked really cool and those were great effects. The sound effects were great, but there was no music that really set the mood. Great job overall though!

Spiel-Flache by omaha 2014-04-28T04:06:00

Great job on the game! Loved the lighting and particle effects, as well as the change in the background color. Overall the game was really just peaceful and exploring, and the music really set the audio. The control was a little weird and difficult at times. Good job!

LD33 — You are the Monster

Moon Base Shootout by Unept 2015-08-25T05:20:00

I think that the game is really well done. There's a lot of enemy types, there are a lot of nice attentions to detail and it feels like a very complete game. Would be nice if there were some environment noises, but with such a complete game that was a minor issue. The biggest gripe I had was really figuring out how it related to the theme - it seemed as though the enemies were monsters, but not the player. Perhaps the theme was found later in the game, but I got through quite a lot of levels without seeing it. I really love the space vacuum mechanic though. It really added some variety to the gameplay when fighting enemies, and lead to some interesting puzzles.

You are what you eat by woodenrabbit 2015-08-25T06:36:00

I really like the feel that the game had in terms of movement and attacking in a range. I like the grid layout was really aesthetically pleasing. Also like the use of alpha on the tiles and stuff (really helped with the aesthetics). Like others have said, it would be great if there were more complexities to the game or more mechanics. But you did a great job. I also like the health bars and the good path finding the enemies had.

Monster Truck Story by godjammit 2015-08-26T04:56:00

I love the take on the theme. The environments were very nicely done, and the lighting and effects really felt great. The juxtaposition between the twinkly jukebox sound and the techno sounding music was great. A particular issue I had was with the sounds overlaying a little too much - you might have wanted to use shorter, less heavy sounds. The game ran a bit slow and it felt like the controls were a bit sticky. I really like the floating text in the game, was pretty cool looking at. I was also pretty happy with how the camera moved. Gameplay wise it was pretty simple, perhaps adding some layers to it would make it more interesting.

Kraken vs Leviathan by Aumni 2015-08-26T04:49:00

I think it is a cool concept, with a nice take on how the game should play. I love the glow effects and the particle effects and it was great that you had both good AI and a very complete game. However, I felt like the turning of the character made it very easy for me to be confused since I got confused on whether I was turning moving directions. The feel of the game was pretty good, but something felt off. The sort of washed out colors on the art made it not as visually distinctive as it could have been. But it is a great game, keep up the good work!

Midnight Bootleg by Pastry 2015-08-25T06:21:00

Nice use of the desktop to catch my eye. So I'm not a big fan of thrillers so I was getting kinda nervous, but I love what it did. I think it was really cool that you those browsers to work the way they did. I think that the weird art style really contributed to the eerieness, and I like the build-up that it had. Really love the ending. Unfortunately the downloading part was way too realistic, and the search term was pretty specific. I know that's an appeal for these games, but from a personal standpoint I don't find them very fun. Great job!

Betty the Yeti by grywhttl 2015-08-26T05:07:00

The game looked really nice, and the skating was really interesting but really frustrating too! The last special move was really hard to pull off. Love the different rankings that you had at for number knocked out.

Something Purple by Andrew 2015-08-25T05:30:00

The game concept itself was pretty interesting, and I really loved the style it used for the characters, just showing their outline. I think that there were a lot of well done elements, like the pathfinding and the set up of the environments. The outline style made it difficult to play occasionally since there was no sense of depth at times. The gameplay mechanic was interesting at first, but it felt like it quickly grew stale and didn't add any layers. I personally felt like the background music didn't really match the game and set a different mood to the game than I was expecting. However, I felt like you managed to get a pretty complete game package in the time given and I think you did a great job.

Sobaken by A_K_ 2015-08-25T05:41:00

I think that it was a really well done game. The environments and the objects were great and the lights, particles and monster all fit into the theme. I got some Hotline Miami feels from this game, and it was definitely interesting. I think the controls were a bit difficult at times, and the attack sound the monster used got really repetitive and overwhelming after a while. For some reason I kept getting stuck on the 3rd (or 4th?) level after I killed everything. I think you did a great job!

Tabuz. Aliens are coming. by SvenFrankson 2015-08-25T06:43:00

I really like the art style that you had, with the low poly world, it really added to the aesthetic of the game. I like that you have different failure messages based on what happened, and the use of the lights on the UFO really help with feedback with what the spaceship is doing. Something tiny that bothered me was that the respawn to main page time was a little too long so it made it frustrating to keep playing (I suck at these game). Like others have said, the Q and D were really weirdly placed which made it weird to play. Great work!

RGBlob by 966623 2015-08-25T06:06:00

I think it was a really great game with a really great concept. I love the playful feel the characters had, and the overall industrial/sci-fi feel that the environments had. The music (though you didn't choose to be rated on it) was pretty satisfying and the color mechanics and splitting mechanics were pretty unique and innovative. However, there were a couple issues that made the game a little difficult to play. The first was the need to tab to switch characters. With more than 2 characters it got pretty difficult and frustrating to have to cycle through them like that. Perhaps also setting them as number options would 1-4 with a little icon of the slime's current state at the bottom of the screen would help make that a little easier. Secondly, it felt like some of the levels had great puzzles, but some got to the point where you were stuck and had to restart. If there were some way to make it possible for the player to recover from their mistakes (sorry I can't think of a solution of the top of my head), I think this would be great. I think you did a great job overall and I really enjoy the concept (probably why I have so much to say about it). Keep up the great work!
