LD57 — Depths

The Signal by joewan 2025-04-11T18:56:54Z

The mood in the game is excellent! Sounds, intro and overall look is superb.

However, there are few gameplay points that I would like to note: - Game would benefit from checkpoints. It is quite frustrating to die rather late on the level, just to replay. - Also if you happen to fire too many bullets, then you know you are out of luck, but technically not lost yet. - The character feels too slow to move, making it a bit frustrating. The move speed compared to the level size is not ideal.

This was a fun crafting sim (also liked the hidden surprise). I played it until victory. The game's strength was good pacing.

One small quip: I think when I upgraded the productivity the second time, it didn't do anything. The interaction buttons also lack feedback when they are pressed, so it is sometimes unclear whether I failed at pressing button or if the recipe does not exist.

But all in all, wonderful for creating that in such a short time!

Out Of My Depth by okuar 2025-04-12T17:06:55Z

This did not feel like a game, but an art piece (no probs with that)! I liked how the piece evoked the emotions of struggle and futility, it still could have been a bit shorter (would still make the point), as there was no interactivity.

If you want to make it a game, it should have selection somewhere :D (well, technically, if you have two buttons in the end "do you want to win" or "do you want to lose", that would still technically be a game, if you want to push your artistic limits while still making a "game")

Cool athmosphere!

Altitudes by PolymathLD 2025-04-07T11:06:36Z

I liked the game atmosphere, but the up/down control scheme was a bit frustrating, as having "bullet hell" when some shots can't hit you and some can was disorienting and bit against the typical idea of bullet hell (if it moves, it hurts you).

But overall nice work for a gamejam! The assets played very well together, giving a nice presentation.

A superb looking game for this short time! I really liked all the little details, like the shopkeepers face changing after you buy something, and that the world seemed to have depth ;)

Also, the biome changes were a nice surprise!

Shelter from the Blight by Yiraa 2025-04-10T13:37:19Z

Once I figured out how the economy works, I won (escape) victory on 2nd try.

This game looks awesome and control between levels was intuitive. The economy system was a bit gotcha, was thinking that could it be better if you could still gather the early game resources further down, but with reduced effectivity, or so that they would reappear at some lower level, but not perhaps each.

Was a fun experience!

Congrats of finishing your game (I'm also first timer on game jams/Ludum Dare)!

The game was a bit unclear on what I was supposed to do, but I managed to find the exit and win. Sometimes it seems like I lost health without enemies being nearby, and sometimes enemies hit me without me losing health. The ability to only attack towards right was a bit weird. The special effects were fun addition. The game could be a tad bit more responsive and inform the player on what's happening (whether you hit the enemy etc.)

Very good looking game! I liked the sonar vibes a lot, and how it made you to focus on it.

However, once I found the 5/5 treasures, I didn't know where I had to proceed. Perhaps back to the surface? But when I returned back to the depth 0, nothing happened. This is something that might need more instructions.

I'll post source code during the 1h timeframe to upload.

Cthonic Depths by Lazyanttu 2025-04-07T01:54:24Z

Nice, it is done :D

I got last code changes and project finished ~10 minutes before the deadline, and last publishing stuff done ~7 minutes before the deadline

This was my first time participating in a game Jam, was quite an experience ^^

Thanks for feedback!

@oxnh , @javasaurus , @dhim I planned to have tutorial in game, but failed to do so in this timeframe, so I just put a wall of text on this/Itch pages, but that was definitely not ideal. The game is not very self explanatory. Levels attempt to be in ascending difficulty order, the first ones teaching more basic stuff first, but you can play them in any order. Thanks for feedback!

@aleksey4adoff I made a mistake with assets (for example, using .wav for sounds, and too big images) and too big resolution, so it takes quite a while to load on itch. I originally thought it would be desktop game, but then I went for HTML5 on web for ease of access without testing it first properly (I was running quite thin on time tbh). Thanks for effort for building it regardless of the hassle, I'm sorry for that experience. Yeah, I took inspiration from the old dos games definitely!

EDIT: I fixed three bugs from the Itch version: -Scenario 7 is now winnable (it was missing one equipment) -Orb of the Depths is now properly consumed after use. -Fullscreen in itch.io partially works, however with it WASD scrolling no longer works (not essential in the game, but nice to have)

Cthonic Depths by Lazyanttu 2025-04-07T15:17:10Z

@aleksey4adoff

I updated few critical bugs from the itch version (looking at that performance issue later). Currently very likely your local version Scenario 7 is unplayable, and the Orb of the Depths is not properly consumed per use. I updated the source code download link also (Itch version is also up-to date, also partially fixed its fullscreen issue).

North Depths by voidsrc 2025-04-07T12:53:29Z

I couldn't progress in the game due to missing iron for the elevator (didn't read comments before trying...). Quite rough on your mouse hand :D However, the graphics and the athmosphere is superb, also incorporates the theme well (or would, if I could get the damn elevator)!

Debts in the Depths by Reaktori 2025-04-07T11:55:17Z

Nice game! I managed to pay my debts ^^

The Heart system was a bit unclear? One time I lost the level, and just lost one heart. But the next time I lost heart, I lost 2 hearts and lost the game? What was the logic behind the heart loss.

Debts in the Depths by Reaktori 2025-04-07T13:22:41Z

@reaktori I hope I am not spoiling anything, but I was fighting 2 Dragons in the post game "endless mode". Might have been level 22/20 if I remember correctly.

You also went for a good nostalgy trip here :D The feeling for the retro command was just right.
