LD43 — Sacrifices must be made

Sacrificial Sam by HitchH1k3r 2018-12-09T18:38:48Z

Very interesting game. The mechanics are nicely introduced and everything feels polished.

As already mentioned, switching characters becomes a little bit tedious and sometimes there is a lot of distance to travel. But these are only minor defaults: the game is very impressive and consistent (graphics, mechanics, music).

Probably one of the best I played so far :)

The True Treasure Hunter by Kahztein 2018-12-09T17:50:35Z

Great entry!

The core mechanics are here but there are two little bugs I found (I played the original version): - I fell next to spikes where a guy was dead and couldn't move or jump, only change direction. It seems that the dead body prevented me from moving (afterlife revenge I guess :D). - when an arrow doesn't kill anybody, you die simply by walking on it.

Other than those bugs and the music a little bit too repetitive, I really enjoyed the gameplay and the graphics. Wish there was more levels and more blood (just like when you are crushed by a giant boulder!). Good job!

Send In The Interns by A-Flat Miner Studios 2018-12-09T18:56:08Z

Very funny game. The art style is great and the concept interesting. However, the levels are all quite simple and the true difficulty is to get 3 stars everythime. Besides what said @matank, maybe unlocking next levels after a certain amount of stars could force the player to try his/her best.

But very good game overall. I particularly enjoyed some details such as breaking the jars, clicking on the goat statuette and spamming the "Run!" button (it is a pleasure to see an intern tsunami entering the temple!).

Tribu 43 by FiloGC 2018-12-31T11:24:54Z

Wow well done! Even more impressive since it's a compo game! Congratulations, I see a lot of potential in your game. I really like the art style and, even if the animations were a little bit weird at first, I ended up enjoying them a lot. Even the UI is very good.

Here are however a few things that could benefit from an improvement if you want to spend more time on your game : - smoother movement and pathfinding (I also noticed that the ranged soldiers move quite smoothly while the tanks seem to have a hard time walking, maybe it was just an impression). - sometimes a soldier to hire is cheaper than the others while surpassing them in every stat. - as mentionned, some kind of map. - I saw you prevented the player from sacrificing their soldiers while engaged in a fight. It is a design choice and I respect it but I think allowing a sacrifice during a fight could invovle the player more and add tension and rewards for them.

Nicely done! Hoping to see more of this! Good luck. :)

PURITY by jantunes 2018-12-04T19:16:23Z

Very cool art style, music and mood. You really need a pen and a paper to help you. Some visual clues next to the women could have helped a little bit (child/of age, hair, eyes) instead of having to highlight them to get the informations.

It's too bad the game doesn't give you the answer when you fail though.

Good job!

Tainted Blade: The Dungeon Escape by Lawrence 2018-12-06T20:40:38Z

Really liked this one!

I liked the fact that the dagger can get stuck and you have to hide before getting it back (only if the other guard didn't stopped right next to it...).

Difficulty was high enough. After I played I remembered that there was a sprint function! :D

The only thing I would maybe change is the guards once they stop chasing you: they get stuck in their position. Sometimes they are in an angle that makes the level impossible. I guess it is voluntary, it is just that I prefer when you always have a chance (even a tiny one) to complete the level. Making them looking around them from time to time in order to get an opportunity attack would be good.

Good job! Nice little game!

Dance Dance SACRIFICES by Ever 2018-12-04T20:23:00Z

Haha hilarious sounds and ridiculous dances. Cute artstyle of sacrificed animals and humans, I had to pause myself just to look at them :D

I agree that some music could greatly improve the experience!

Interesting and fun idea!

The armor hat is a little bit surprising, aswell as other items I don't fully understand (the key, the torch). I suspect that the key lets you escape a room full of monsters but I never had the good timing. Enemies are so fast that the different weapon mechanics feel anecdotic. Maybe if you find a way to give a little bit more control over your inventory, it could really become a great puzzle. For example, you could make it so the current item gets destroyed only if you change direction.

Overall very fun entry. I really like the graphics and the idea...and the lute of course!

@dreamlesshero Thanks!

@PxLucasF Sorry to hear that. There is a HTML5 version, I did not know some systems were incompatible. I will make a video if I have time...

@captaincorgistan @kathlar Thanks!

@blacklambert Thank you! Yeah, I definitively agree with you. I will have to think about another way to do it, but it shouldn't be too hard.

How Many Days Left? by kaiagan 2018-12-06T20:23:46Z

@jdelaay025johnd1788 Thanks :) Yeah, I was thinking about environment for the 3D assets (trees, doors, beds, walls, etc), not characters!

The objective is indeed to assign people to tasks. You decide who you feed and keep warm. When a character dies, you can have a large amount of meat and cloth (warmth) but you lose manpower in the long run. In some cases, it is actually critical to get resources immeditaley and thus sacrificing someone. In other cases, a character can get a disease or a wound and they will cost more food/warmth. If you don't have the medicine to heal them, actually making them die faster is beneficial. But I have to admit that right now, the game isn't the most balanced game ever and generally you want people to survive.

How Many Days Left? by kaiagan 2018-12-07T20:54:58Z

@pogo Thank you. The tools (nails icon) were supposed to repair damaged parts of the house after the storms (broken windows/doors making the rooms colder) and to allow the player to disassemble furnitures (beds, shelves, etc) in order to get wood. As you may have noticed, these events are not implemented so they are completely useless right now :D

How Many Days Left? by kaiagan 2018-12-10T10:39:12Z

@idinakloppstock Thank you! The thing is that the fire has 50% chance of losing power every hour. Basically when your fire is below half its maximum power, every rooms in the house are cold and characters lose warmth. If you don't want to consume 1000 clothes, you have to sustain the fire above 50% power. Notice also that rooms like bathroom and kitchen are cold even with a 100% fire.

Unfortunately you can't see the fire power or the max actions of a character. I hadn't time to implement it.

@emmatw @krylos Thank you very much!

@widdershinscrustacean Thank you! I didn't know Zafehouse Diaries but it looks good! Reminds me of a flash game I played a long time ago, which inspired me this ld game (I don't remember the name) :)

To be honest I knew I was not going to have a lot of time and I lowered my ambition. This was my first game jam and I am actually surprised of how much things you can do when you feel "pressured". This is why I quickly finished the base mechanics. I took the time to polish a little bit the UI and I made a tutorial because my priority was to have something playable. There are a lot of bugs of course but this was the spaghettiest code I've ever seen in my life. Adding little features just before posting (new survivors, fire extinguished by the storm) was so much faster than trying to put my nose into this mess again. :D

I am currently developping this game "seriously" and it is so much cleaner now! There will be a lot more random events indeed. As I said earlier, I added the events (fire extinguished by storm and new survivor) at the very end and it upgraded the game from "very boring" to "boring".

Anyway, I'm glad some people enjoyed it! Thank you! ;)

Dungeon of Friendship by captainweeaboo 2018-12-04T20:41:35Z

Very interesting game! I think the best part is when you realize the sacrifices you already made. Even without the sacrifice part, the team management aspect was already great and new for me. The jumps feel very slow and floaty however.

Nice game and pleasant surprise!

Cold Galaxy by PixelMeal 2018-12-03T21:21:07Z

Very interesting game!

You quickly understand that you must not attach yourself to your crew members because they must be constantly sacrificed! The only downside I see is the lack of a greater goal. The fact that your crew is so vulnerable makes it so your only objective is to earn more money. Customizing and improving your ship could be great (but 48 hours may be too short for such features).

Feels very polished and I think the theme fits perfectly!

Oh and I love when crew members suddenly become racist, or jealous when someone just died :D
