LD34 — Two Button Controls / Growing

Sort the Court! by graebor 2015-12-14T06:39:00

Very nice graphics and the Y/N works quite nicely for two button controls. The creatures that want to eat/prey on the population were hilarious! Aside from the amusing yes/no sounds, it felt a tad lackluster. I did like the day-night cycle though.

Solid entry for sure. I did notice that there's some kind of bug with the response/inquiry text that can pop up if you refuse the wizard. The last half of his statement stays stuck in the message box and you can't what else anyone says. This was after I made the 250 population mark.

Looks very good and is fun to play, if only for a short while. It can become mildly frustrating if you get backed into a corner a lot. Got through the first 3 relatively easily. A simple mechanic done well, and that's not super easy.

Mystic Temple by Tipyx 2015-12-19T00:39:00

Seems a bit hard to me, that ancient temple guardian sure is quick on those tentacles. Looks very nice and the helpful hints/indicators on which keys to use were much appreciated. Unfortunately, the screen scroll/movement makes it a little hard to focus at times. Dizzying is one word for it.

Otherwise, excellent work. I think it would make a better 4 button game (UP, DOWN, -LEFT-, -RIGHT-) since the time it took me to realize the keys I need to break free of traps on the first couple runs allowed the guardian to catch up pretty easily.

Hmm. That's odd... I'll have a look at that.

To the Windows users:

It seems I missed a step in packaging it where you are supposed to include the DLLs. Sorry. :|

In any case, despite trying to I couldn't get the new arrangement to work for me locally (the exe wouldn't run properly even with the correct dlls in the folder), so I've just ditched the EXE altogether.

That said, it's very easy to just go and get a copy of Love2D as a zip file (from their website) for your architecture (separate ones for the 32 and 64 bit). Just grab that, unzip it and drag the .love file (from here) onto the love.exe file to run the game.

Nine Panels by Chaserbrown 2015-12-14T06:16:00

Fits very well with the theme and is pretty amusing. Nice to have a built-in help tutorial and an indication when new combos were available. The bomb i was an interesting addition, as opposed to turbo which although useful was not particularly surprising.

Looks nice, although I wish the guys were easier to count/not randomly placed. Gets boring pretty quick, but I'm not a huge fan of clickers. A win/lose condition would have been nice. E.g. make X gold or achieve Y throughput.

Tenant Chaos by Siege 2017-12-05T01:56:08Z

Well, that was amusing. My biggest complaint is the completely random pricing scheme to fix stuff.

Vroom Vroom Kaboom by profan 2017-12-19T01:17:01Z

Neat idea and solving the 'puzzles' is kind of fun, but there are number of obvious issues.

One very noticeable one is the lack of background music, feedback noises (like passed an intersection with no further instruction -- it's sort of noticeable with the step marker...), or and sound effect for car crashes.

Another is that you have to zoom in a fair bit to see what direction the car is going (need to see yellow and red dots). It would be simple to add an arrow to the car art so we can see which way that car is going.

Also, the little dashed squares (destinations) sometimes confuse me as to the car number when I am glancing back and forth because they are sometimes right around the car and very close to the little black squares. White and green dashes/text are a little hard to see as well since they blend in with the road edges/markings or the grass respectively (insufficient contrast).

P.S. There's also some UI weirdness regarding tabs and backspaces and if you hit escape you can't click on the buttons. The UI pulldown for copy, paste, select, etc is more a PITA than it's worth. Regular keyboard shortcuts work fine. You can't click play while the stupid pulldown is visible and closing it is non-intuitive. Sometimes when you press backspace to delete a step it instead pulls the selection back to the car number every time which makes it hard to delete multiple steps.

Using W,A,S,D or UP,LEFT,RIGHT,DOWN with some simply square images w/arrows to show in the box would be much more intuitive and less irritating to type out. Even S(traight),L(eft),R(right) would be preferable.

P.P.S. It would be nice if it kept your solutions while you go on to further steps in case you want to go back and refine them. Tangential to that some scoring would be nice, perhaps for number steps AND timing.

Mythical Development Time by jnharton 2017-12-07T05:32:19Z

Not sure why it's crashing, it was working fine for me (which is frequently the case for a developer). Certainly I didn't have a lot of time to fully test it myself before the deadline. I wanted to at least submit something.

Thanks for the error feedback, although admittedly without more context it'll be hard to track down the exact problem with just the error message and no info about the context of when it happened. I have very little idea why there would be an issue "10 seconds" in.

I've tried doing the merge with love.exe on other projects, but I've had problems before in the past with getting that right and I can only do it for Windows. The .love file should work with the zip/.dmg/etc for other systems fairly easily. There's not a whole lot I can do if you're intrinsically against an extra download of a single zip/archive file plus a drag drop. I would have liked to work in some in-game instructions, but I didn't make it to that step.. Also, while storing messages is easy, visualizing things -nicely- inside the game is a bit harder.

Mythical Development Time by jnharton 2017-12-19T00:04:21Z

Just put up a zip file containing 32-bit, 64-bit Windows binaries (and the dlls needed) in separate subfolders. It's in the same google drive folder.

Wow. That's pretty awesome and moderately addictive. I even managed to get over 7500! <insert lots of praise here>. Suffice it to say it's complete, got pretty simple controls, and it's fun. Presumably it's kind of an endless game... The graphics are good, but fairly simple. The sound effects work really well.

Not sure if it was intentional or not, but L=Jump and K=Stomp is sort of backwards of the ideal selection since you have to go backwards to the previous key to stomp.

A Tale about Tail by barsoosayque 2017-12-18T22:39:03Z

Cute and pretty fun to play, albeit it's fairly repetitive and ends suddenly at the 3rd level. As others have said, 1 hit kills are a tad harsh, but I think they work as is because they force you to be extra careful. You have to move pretty quick to avoid being killed and the gold slowing you down makes it chancy. That said, giving you even 2 lives without upping the difficulty a little would probably ruin the game. The double jump is absolutely required and maybe relied on a just a bit much in the current levels. A little more use of underfloor tunnels might be interesting.

The art's pretty good, especially considering it's LD. I do think a little variation would improve it though, like different moon phases and some variety of mole outfits (esp. other colors). You could also have copper, silver, and gold jewelry/loot for some visual variation. It would also have been interesting for the buildings to have doors (either permanently open or open/close functionality too), some outside lamps, and other aesthetic details. The same goes for the "bank" which basically just means an underground area with more loot. A front sign, an alternate set of wall tiles for the "vaults" and vault doors would be nice.

Less repetitive music or some more audio/sound effects would be nice, it gets kinda annoying by the time you've almost finished the game.

Overall, pretty solid platformer, despite feeling a little demo-y due to very minimal mechanics.

Don't be Greedy! by Compufreak 2017-12-04T22:15:41Z

Not too bad as a concept and it's playable. I think that 1 HP as the default is very hard, though. There are just too many and too unpredictable enemies to get by with nothing. With regards to weapons the limited choices and 'autofire' are a bit detrimental. Also the hammer is worthless as you still get hit even with it pointed the right direction. The only choices are definitely die (no weapons) and likely die (with a weapon). Having a few more options (especially weight variance) and being able to choose when to attack would make it a lot less painful. If you wanted to extend it I'd say maybe make the minigun 50-60kg and offer several ammo capacities/ammo recharge rates that add extra weight.
