It's pretty fun that you gain points but with negative effects, and the music is really catchy too.

Itโs cool
Game cool. I love pixel art games
What a charming game. I really liked the music too, the coins look very cool.
Simple, nice graphics and addictive. Love it
The game of my childhood!
This really took me back! I love the inclusion of music that intensifies as you progress. I'm not sure if I fully understood why powerdowns were designed to work the way they did, they seemed risky so I ended up avoiding them as much as I could, but that worked out okay for me, haha. Awesome work!!
Like the Gameboy frame...and a good take on Snake.
Great snake implementation! Fun fact: this was the first snake game that my son (he's 5) has ever tried. :) He says "It looks like that lego thing you have"
Hope you had as much fun making it as we did playing it!
So nostalgic! I really like the retro style and the music on this. The whole game felt simple, fun, and polished
Clean Game Boy look and the snake controls feel right. The power-downs are the most interesting part: trading a bigger score for inverted controls or extra speed is a nice risk-reward idea. I'd push it much further, because right now it still plays mostly like classic Snake, and more and weirder power-downs could make it feel like its own game. Nice work for a compo!
Great snake implementation!
You also captured the Game Boy look and feel perfectly. This genuinely feels like a copy of Snake you could've played on a Game Boy in 1990.
@ex3d0 yeah right that was my intention too :)
This is a very good version of snake! I just wanted to give you a shout-out for the attention to detail that you put towards making authentic gameboy visuals. Pixels were aligned to a pixel grid! Sprites stayed within their four-color caps! Is the gameboy screen actually running at the proper resolution of the original gameboy too? Great job :)
The only piece of feedback that I have is that it felt like the error powerdowns often appeared right against the edge of the screen, which made them particularly dangerous in an unpredictable way, and meant that your best bet was generally to avoid interacting with them, which was a shame. Giving the player a visual piece of feedback to let them know which glitch was occurring would have helped the powerdowns shine as a risk/reward mechanic for players who like to live dangerously, as opposed to a hazardous mechanic that will almost always kill your run. For example, if you rotated the head of the snake, you could subtly signal to the player that their controls were scrambled, giving them more agency to survive the scrambled controls without trivializing the danger.
Overall though, I really enjoyed playing, well done!
I love the game boy style!!
Nice! It was fun! I died because I got one of them error things and it sped me up into a wall XD Shoot uhh forgot to get a SS, score was 360 I think?
@koolruz yeah it use the original gameboy resolution (just upscaled in gamemaker for the screen but the base resolution is correct). Also used the original gameboy color pallete :)
Ty for your feedback (yeah the powerdowns are quite random when they are appear - just not on the places which are occupied by food or the snake imself).
@snowdrama 360 is pretty good!
The glitches are a nice twist. The inverse controls one is tough. Played longer than I expected. Style and music feels authentic.
Funny how we had similar ideas, connecting Nokia's snake game with old Nintendo consoles :D
You may want to check GB Studio - I haven't played with it yet because my focus has been the NES, but you could have your snake game running on the actual GB :)
My current high score (could've been better, as the picture shows I did a really bad move there ๐ ): Captura de tela 2026-10-23 140435.png
Nailed the game boy aesthetic for sure, and very on-theme!
It's a snake game I guess. Are increased speed and inverted control the only nerfs? Does the music follow the current score as BPM? Is there a limit to the BPM? I also made a GB game btw, although I used a grayscale palette. Is your font a bitmap or is it an actual font? I would say it's an actual font because the way it's rendered is weird.
The snake looks great! Glitches arenโt very tasty :)
Nice! The glitches were an interesting touch , the bonus vs risk when the controls invert , I'd try aim for it if there was a straight section ahead so I didn't need to steer. I couldn't get much beyond ~2 screen widths worth of tail. For the diehards input buffering would be cool ( if you're not doing it ) so those rapid turns at highers speeds are reliable.
Cutest snake head I have ever seen! :) Simple but extremely cutie XD
Just an idea: I would imagine one thing would make the game better: the inclusion of a "handheld retro game" frame around the game itself. Like the ones we used to play such games on, you know :P
@aweskybear huh ? there is a gameboy frame ? did you used AI for the comment lol ?
@neowhoru no, but I am very much "blind" XD probaly (now I saw it as you mention)
Awesome. MAKE OT BIGGER NOW ๐๐ค [for blind people]/ but I think I imagine a frame to include the bottom too
PS: really?? Can't we discenr between AI and non-AI comments?
@neowhoru One more note: I had slept like 7 hours for 3 days at the time I had written my original comment. Projects / stuff/ etc. (inflection point).
**Does that explain it to you, bro?** Or we never thought there is reason A or reason B or reason C or reason D for anything in the negligence of people .. ? ๐ค Bro .. ?
