What an impressive work ! Great job Captain ! What about more development on this prototype ? If think it would be great !

Thanks! Yeah I think that this is a really solid prototype and it might serve as the base for a game I'll make in the future!
Man these encounters are brutal. I enjoyed playing. I love the look of it, very clean.
Great job! I am a sucker for space games, and I really enjoyed a quick playthrough 💪
Nice turn based space game had fun playing this one, good stuff!
very interesting, it looks like some platforms and methods of teaching visual programming... very charming game
Congratulations on your first Ludum Dare! It was a bit of a challenge, but a lot of fun, great entry. Played and voted ♥
cool game
This was a really cool premise for a turn based space game. I liked the aesthetics of the game, and I think you got the atmosphere down pretty well. For me, I think one issue was the lack of depth to the gameplay. It seemed like you just had to fire and hope you got lucky with the accuracy. Either you do that, or you get really close and then you're just trading hitpoints with the pirates, which also wasn't super satisfying to do. I think if you fleshed out the main gameplay loop and gave the player more control over their actions, that would make the game even better!
The shots absolutely need to be faster, most of the games time is being taken up by slow firing. I think that's where using a laser instead of bullets would be useful.
Playing at 1440p it appears that a box kind of overlays the controls of the ship, so I can only click left or right for the commands.
Edit:
I switched my monitor's resolution down to 1080p before launching and am able to play like normal. It's a nice experience. The pace and style really reminds me of FTL. For the first encounter, I think it would be nice if the enemy ship wouldn't move around so much, or at least have the camera pan out dependent on if the ship is visible to the player or not. I like suggestion of @wolfier for faster firing, as this would speed the game up a bit.
The music and sound are enjoyable. I'm glad to have experienced your first jam and wish you the best of luck in making more games. :)
Graphics are amazing! Love it and I will play this alot when I am free gonna keep this so I don't accidentally delete it!
Oh man that's a lot more feedback than I was expecting, thanks everyone! I'll try to address everyone here sorry if I miss you. @guneal haha yes - I definitely needed to spend a bit more time playtesting and on the encounter design, I ended up losing the last day of the jam to life so I didn't get to refine anything really :( @notredamstra I'm a sucker for space games too! I tried to make the game I want that I don't think is out there - and I have lots of ideas for expanding in the future! @soul-grinder Thanks! :) I'm glad you enjoyed it! @batthecat Thanks for the feedback! :) @sayomgwtf Thanks! Yeah I definitely want to join more jams in the future! I feel like I should have weighted the advantage towards the player at least for this prototype, I agree the encounters are rough. @tokto Thank you! @mateu I 100% agree with you, there are so many ideas I had for this game and I had to cut out a lot of stuff to scope down for the jam. I definitely want to have more tactical depth and strategy involved so that encounters are challenging, but fair, and there are multiple ways to handle them. Also I created the fighters squadrons but they don't really do anything yet, I would like to make them bomb the enemy ships and stuff @wolfier yes I agree, I want to add different weapon types like torpedoes, beams, lasers, and maybe let the player customize which weapons are on their ship. That being said, I think the speed is way too slow as it is. Thanks for playing! @trevor-lentz Ah yes I see my issue I forgot to have my ui scale with screensize so it is constant. I'm glad you enjoyed it! FTL and Flotilla are definitely big inspirations for me, I'd like to expand on this game and lean more into that roguelike adventure style. @aynu Thanks! I usually just stick to programming but I wanted to try making my own art so im glad it looks good to you! There isn't a whole lot to the game yet, but I will update the itch page if/when I expand on the game!
i think the link is broken because it just leads to a site that says "not found"
I liked the game, it's quite interesting and the gameplay is good. Also the game style and sounds are very good and nice. I had fun playing the game and I would recommend it to other people) Very cool game
Nice entry. I would've liked to have some more movement control on ships - maybe it'd be easier to have players click a position they want to go, since it can be a bit hard to judge moves in advance.
nice minimalistic graphics, the game has potential. i didn't like the turn based movement system. shooting system is nice.
@whysguy52 Your name made me chuckle :) -I am not sure what is going on, first time uploading to LD so I probably did something wrong there... it can be played on itch for now until I get that figured out here: https://ezduzziteh.itch.io/depths-of-the-void
@binaryspark Totally agree, it is impossible to tell where you are going to end up - and that was intentional as part of my original design, but I do think it is more frustrating than fun and doesn't really add anything to the game. In my next iteration I do want to at least have previews so you can see where you are going to end up.
@k48uto Originally I was going to have the "turn based" system be more declarative in that you declare all of your moves and then every ship executes its moves simultaneously rather than one after the other - I wonder if that would work better. I wanted to make the shooting system work in the same way where each ship declares its targets and then they all shoot at the same time. I definitely do not want to turn it into a real-time game though - I'll have to do more thinking and try to come up with a more fun movement system, maybe allowing for 3 dimensional movement rather than restricting it to a 2D plane like how it is now.
Thanks all for the feedback! I'm excited to work on this project more post jam - maybe restarting from the ground up.
I love a good space strategy game, it reminds me a little of the Battlestar Galactic game. I ran into the issue of the UI breaking on my 4k screen but got it working once I used a 1080p screen. I think right now there's not quite enough interesting decision making from turn to turn, it feels like the basis for a good game but not quite there yet.
Really fun idea, and executed pretty well too! The camera controls were a bit difficult, but thankfully I've managed to work with them (thanks to an undocumented feature of Q/E keys :) ). I'm also not sure how the weapon arc work - looks like you need to be positioned in the right way to have a clean line of fire for a gun, yet most of the time while it looked like I could fire both the side guns and two of the front ones, my ship only spawned 2 projectiles, and not from the guns I'd expect it to. At few occasions I've heard multiple projectile launched sounds, but only one of them spawned and hit the enemy. Aligning yourself directly towards the enemy seems to work best and all 4 front guns fire as expected. Gameplay-wise, it felt pretty cool! I liked the intuitive idea of slowing down to make tighter manoeuvres then speeding up forwards. I think having the speed at just 2 max might have been too limiting, maybe having more options there would give you more tactical options. The sounds were pretty cool, background music fit nicely. Overall, a really nice jam game, well done!
Sorry, but the UI broke for me and I couldn't do anything but rotate in one place.
Fun little strategy game. I too encountered the UI Bug so could only turn left and right
I only managed to beat the first encounter the other two were brutal! Great job for your first jam submission the graphics and audio were great and i had a lot of fun playing!
