Hey, nice game! It's great to see something with a tutorial, nicely done. Though I did have trouble beating even the first wave, the sigils refused to combine...

mrwarranty 2024-04-15 17:02

Thanks @pebkac ! Yeah, I know there were some occasional issues with the hit detection on moused-over elements, which I'd clean up with more time. Hopefully you were eventually able to get it working!

sirjupitron 2024-04-15 18:05

Hi! cool game, clever mechanics, art has a proper 90`s style that I like. Thanks

fnelix 2024-04-15 20:21

Nice little game, I really enjoyed the sound effects. The text was sometimes hard to read because of the color and position, but I think I understood what I needed to do. Still killed myself several times.

davidtrac 2024-04-15 21:51

nice idea, but I got stuck on the tutorial, idk if it was just because of my browser. But I skipped ahead and I liked this little tower defense summoning game!

mythrilminestein 2024-04-16 01:32

I loved all the sounds in this game & enjoyed the concept of having to maintain your "will" as a mechanic. Thanks for the neat experience. :)

fusionnist 2024-04-16 05:30

Nice and fun! I especially liked the effort you put into the story and sounds. Game was tough but not too much, I don't think I restarted levels more than ~10 times perhaps. Good job!

torte478 2024-04-16 16:55

I really love graphics and sound design! It was a lot of fun.

mrwarranty 2024-04-16 18:17

@sirjupitron Thank you so much for the kind words! My friends like to tease me about the Paintcore drawings but I never claimed to be a great artist. 😅

@fnelix Thank you! I think what happened with the text was that I never intended for the game to be played full-screen and itchio kind of let me down by allowing it. I tried to position it to be legible but it was only for the 800x600 resolution. Thank you for powering through though, ha.

@davidtrac I'm giving you an F-minus. :grin:

@mythrilminestein So glad you enjoyed it! This was actually my first time doing sound design ever, and I was really pleased with how it came out. I'll definitely build off of what I learned here! Big shout-out to the Jonas Tyroller video on the subject.

@fusionnist That's just the line I was trying to walk with the difficulty - not trivially easy, but not so hard a person cant finish, either. 🙂 Thank you for the kind feedback!

@torte478 Thank you! I've never considered art to be a strength of mine, but I bring what I've got. 😅 It was really nice to find that sound design, which always intimidated me before, wasn't so hard once I actually got into it. I'm definitely finding a pattern of falling back on my writing in these games, so to be able to add other aspects - and hopefully keep improving my gameplay in subsequent projects - feels really good.

A fun little game, I also appreciate how when asked NOT to do certain things I proceeded to do it because I had to, yielding a funny sequence, overall a really good entry Ps. I got cursed again and broke the power demon summoning segment

mrwarranty 2024-04-18 01:36

@stmate03 That's just what I was going for! I know all gamers are secret deviants. 😂 Glad you found it rewarding.

I know of one spot that still has a potentially game-breaking bug: When the first giant rat comes, I failed to clear the existing sigil to make room for the new ones. So if those weren't moved, you have to restart. That said, in the name of fairness and laziness, I'm not changing it, lol.

josion 2024-04-18 02:19

This is such a cool concept! I especially love the 90s aesthetic you have going on, it really adds to the overall atmosphere. Great job!

mrwarranty 2024-04-18 03:59

@josion Thank you so much for the kind words! I didn't intentionally go for '90s, but apparently that's just when my art skills stopped developing. 😆 Glad you enjoyed it!

keithswanger 2024-04-18 06:32

There are a lot of systems in place here, nice work! So many animations as well, I enjoyed exploring all the different ways I could die. The timing is very tight, there is almost no leniency to get those demons summoned in time. I would have loved a bit more time to prepare between waves. I got stuck when I started summoning two demons, I could no longer channel one of the demons, and it kept killing me. I like what you've created here though, thanks for making it!

vidarn 2024-04-20 14:45

The tutorial is very well done, it's funny and teaches the mechanics in a way that is easy to understand. I like getting to try the interactions one by one. I also really like the art style and animations, it's funny and very charming. The demons are adorable

I found the game to be quite difficult though, I had a lot of trouble getting the sigils onto the summoning circles in time. If I was a bit to slow, the rats would kill the demon and get through to me before I could get a new one up. Eventually I did figure out that you could move the sigils to more strategic positions, and that helped a bit.

rolly 2024-04-21 13:02

Very nice concept, with great humor and sound effects!

It was fun trying out everything I was told not to, and every time there was a different outcome, which was hilarious. It made it look very polished!

Note that I played in full screen mode even though you mentioned I shouldn't, but the top and bottom of the screen were cropped otherwise.

Cool game!

mrwarranty 2024-04-23 13:00

@keithswanger Thank you! "The Many Deaths of You" was exactly the trope I was trying to invoke, lol. Wally is very wimpy. I didn't want that to be the entirety of the game, but as I started developing it I realized that a lot of the fun would be seeing how you could die - hence the 20-30 different random death messages for each type. It was fun for me to write those. I'm glad you enjoyed it! As far as getting stuck with two demons, I made the will charge 25% faster than it depleted, which creates a challenge but never makes it impossible, I believe. Of course, since you can't charge while telekines...ing, it does force the player to learn quickly. Bugs aside, I'm happy with where the difficulty curve currently is - though if I were spending more time on this, I'd prefer to get it to at least 10 levels and a bigger story. My original plan was to have enemies come from four and eventually eight directions (with the adjacent towers mixing their attention between those). But for 48 hours I had to go with this version.

@vidarn I appreciate the kind words! It's funny, I hadn't even thought about setting up the sigils to get a jump on the next placement while I was designing the game, but it's a great strategy for shaving off precious seconds. The thing that bothers me the most is that sometimes you can drop a sigil on the circle and it still won't detect it, which is obnoxious but thankfully not prevalent enough to break the game, I hope. The timing is definitely tight, but I like that about it since it encourages the player to keep trying. Hopefully it doesn't feel unfair! Due to the time constraints I had to really speed through Level 3, which I think resulted in a somewhat uneven difficulty curve. I blame it on this terrible scene-loading bug that probably cost me 5 hours of productivity on Saturday.

@rolly Thanks! It sounds like you were the ideal player for this thing, since you're so defiant. I did see the problem with the screen cropping, even though I set the resolution to 800x600. I'm not sure what the itch.io browser resolution ought to be, but I guess I'll adjust it for next time!

Thank you all again for playing my game and taking the time to write comments. I'll get to the rest of your games and give feedback soon!

Very impressive that you managed to get all these mechanics in the game and still had time left to make a proper tutorial to explain it all. The tutorial does not feel too long and gives a lot of character to the entire project. I also enjoy the mechanics that can potentially be dangerous to yourself, it makes the whole experience feel more interesting. A solid entry all around, well done!

furtive-pygmy 2024-04-25 23:29

awesome concept and well executed. The sfx and music were great little additions, and the general game mechanic was great. I enjoyed deleting myself XD I did find it pretty difficult, but was enjoyable anyway. I feel like a bit more polish could do wonders for this game (understand the struggle), but still a very solid entry.
