I can't play the game because my opengl version is 4000. Do you know how to fix that?

dafluffypotato 2023-05-01 03:13

@nature-pixels Should be fixed. I forgot I left a line that required OpenGL 4.3 in there. It should only require 3.3 now. Thanks for the heads up.

I accidentally refreshed the page at the end of typing my original comment (UGHH) but I will try to re-cover everything... probably won't flow or be structured as well.

This game looks beautiful. Very beautiful. I don't even just mean the effects, the art itself is great (of course the particle glow and such really add a lot of polish). You've really mastered your art style. The music immediately takes you into the mindset you need to be in for this game. I even hear faint wilderness sounds I believe? Of course lively grass and foliage. You can tell you know where to add the little stuff. Jumping and landing feels impactful. Great feedback auditory and visual. Even little things like the leaves independently falling and flowing (how do you handle leaves falling in different directions and different speeds?). This is a masterclass in dialogue, perfect sfx, animation speed, skip, and art. Distinct character designs. All assets are very cohesive and smooth, nothing is jarring or a mishmash (other than the rocks a little bit). Very simple and effective gameplay loop. Exploration gameplay mechanic is perfect for such a cool and good looking world.

My immediate reaction was that everything was slow and heavy, but after playing for a bit I think it's purposeful for the chill vibes of the game? I know there's a lot of time constraint but perhaps you could write some simple code for a pause menu with some audio and music control? Just a little pet peeve of mine. The shadow "vignette" looks weird to me, like a gooey liquid instead of darkness. But maybe it's what you wanted with the whole magic lore and all. As I said before the stones look a little weird, like they were made to be in a building or something and not natural with the solid borders. Also, WHY NO WASD???

You should expect to place pretty highly for graphics I'd say. Overall really polished and fun, chill entry. I've had the game open the whole time writing this message. Sometimes games don't need enemies.

dafluffypotato 2023-05-01 07:04

@qooorti thanks! WASD controls (or anything really) can be configured in the the json keyboard config file. Although I normally don't bother with WASD because a good portion of people are using AZERTY or DVORAK.

My goal was to go for an immersive environment. The stones (the tile ones, not the decor) are supposed to be remnants of ruins, but they are also a reference to Lucid's tileset. The vignette is supposed to create a bubbly and dreamy feel.

Glad you enjoyed it!

Amazing graphic and sound make the great vibe, like a true modern indie game! But the game map is so empty that can easily get bored. And you should remind player that double-jump is avalible or they'll get stuck.

mahjoub 2023-05-01 15:40

Woow, what a beautiful entry made in such a short time! Really impressive, it is great!

Just wished that the game controls are a bit more dynamic, but overall the chill atmosphere is quite enjoyable, again congrats!

archaeognathus 2023-05-02 20:05

Very impressive graphics that, combined with the music, create a very chilled atmosphere. I somehow fell In love with the digging animation and sound and spend a lot of time just digging all over the map to listen (should I be concerned?) I also work with python and am amazed by how far you can come with it in such a short time :O May I ask a technical question? What do you use to "compile" you game to an exe? I use pyinstaller that I know from other, non game related projects, but some people get a virus warning and can't download or open the game :(

skelleroznik 2023-05-02 20:38

It's beautiful. The art is gorgeous, music and sound effects fit so nicely together and create a nice "starry night" atmosphere. It feels very polished, which is very impressive, considering it's a Compo and not even a Jam game.

If I had to nitpick, though, it felt to me, that this game has a lot of "mess around and find out". I was lost most of my time as it was hard to navigate and know where the points on the map are in the world. But considering the game's mood it could even be a feature to just wander around and chill.

Very vibe-y.

dafluffypotato 2023-05-02 20:50

@archaeognathus I used PyInstaller. If you use --onefile, Windows might not let people use it to begin with, so I just don't. People still get the warnings, but at least they can run it.

mitur 2023-05-03 09:47

A very beautiful and polished game!

maimai 2023-05-04 00:40

Really nice aesthetic! (For some reason I really love the landing sound, it's subtle but solid) Finished all(?) three missions. Really, aside from no ending, the game feels really polished and complete. Fantastic job!

dafluffypotato 2023-05-04 00:59

@maimai there are just the three missions. Thanks for playing!

mreliptik 2023-05-04 08:03

Beautiful game and really pleasing experience. Huge congrats for your entry!

xcarl 2023-05-04 15:56

Beautiful pixel art! I would have prefered if the player moved a little bit faster. Aside from that, excelent job!

jebouin 2023-05-06 02:53

I love the mood of this game, beautiful and relaxing. I found the digging sound to be quite satisfying as well! I got a bit lost and it took me some time to find the items, maybe making the areas a bit more unique would have helped. Anyway there is already a lot going on here for a compo game, great job!

richard-baltrusch 2023-05-06 17:29

Polished game. Really liked the art and music, although the movement feels too heavy for me :) The shader is impressive for pygame, but a little distracting.

asfdfdfd 2023-05-06 18:07

Wow. Graphics. It's stuning. Music remembers me of Fez.

wad 2023-05-06 19:42

Turned out nice, good job

nature-pixels 2023-05-06 20:16

@dafluffypotato Thanks for commenting on my game btw. You're one of my favorite youtubers! I was very happy when you reviewed my game!

rngames 2023-05-07 06:07

✔️ Absolutely beautiful artwork...

✔️ Combined with the nice relaxing sound track, led to the moodiest game I've played so far.

➖ The walking speed felt a bit slow.

⭐ Overall: stunning!

python-b5 2023-05-08 07:44

This really needs more ratings! The art and music are absolutely beautiful. There isn't too much in the way of gameplay, but it's relaxing to play and it's a neat idea to have to find the shape of the terrain based on maps.

floke 2023-05-08 12:36

The graphics are awesome. The pixel art, the wind animations, the falling leaves, the fireflies. It all combines into a great mood. Really beautiful. The vignette is really well done, too. I see in the comments that everyone interprets it a bit different, for me it creates some kind of loneliness feeling, like being lost in this magic forest. If the palette of the game was darker, it would probably also greatly introduce a feeling of fear.

The soundtrack is also great, adding to a calm setting. I really like it.

However, the gameplay feels bland. People tell you to search for their lost stuff for them, you do so, and - that was it. You don't really see any interesting stuff or unlock anything, or feel like there is a purpose in bringing the stuff back to them. I understand the heavy time constraints, but I think you focused too much on visuals and audio and thus the gameplay had to suffer. It is by no means bad - just boring.

With a bigger world and some upgrades, tasks, enemies or whatever one might find interesting, I can see this game becoming an actually successful title. If you ever want to make a non-jam version out of it, I'd buy it!

sarah-alexa 2023-05-08 20:24

I loved this! The graphics with all the little details like particles and grass reacting to you going through it made it feel great, the almost vignette effect around the edges with how it looked and the audio all came together to make something that felt great! The music matched the gameplay so well.

I'd love to see this worked on and turned into a full game of some sort, or at least something bigger. It's very impressive for a jam and something I want to see more of!

robonaut121 2023-05-08 21:38

I absolutely loved this game. The sheer amount of art and sound assets you managed to make in the compo time limit absolutely baffles me. You absolutely nailed the mood too. My only complaints are that finding the objects is a slightly tedious process, although that was helped a lot by the arrow key prompt when I found the first object. Also, the brown dirt tiles are slightly hard to distinguish from the similarly brown background tiles. I often found myself running into walls because of this. Everything else is amazing though!

ardorugus 2023-05-09 04:52

Cute! Love the graphics. The tune is fine, but it ruins the game's pace. Rather'd play longer to some fantasy-like ambience. Nice one overall!
