Really neat game! The mouse dragging gameplay is really unique. It took me a little bit to get the hang of it even with the tutorial, but it works great once you get it. Game also feels like it is at a good difficulty. The pixel art is really nice, too, and the Bfxr sound effects fit the game well.

The introduction is beautifully done and was nice to see the first time around, but I wish I'd be able to skip it on subsequent playthroughs. Bringing the carrots to live is definitely amusing, but there didn't seem to be enough benefit to it to justify losing a carrot over it.

Great game, loved the sound and graphics, fun to play, agree a skip intro/instructions would be nice

dom-de-re 2023-01-12 11:10

Man this is a great idea, a very unique entry, this would have been a perfect Nintendo DS game. It could benefit from more thought and design that the jam conditions didn't allow time for, like I didn't really see the point in animating the carrots, but I feel like you had something in mind but just didn't have time to get it out, I hope you developer this further!

pikkufighter 2023-01-12 11:16

Fun and sometimes hectic game. Would need a sort of goal, maybe point system or something?

skosnowich 2023-01-12 11:24

@fc85057 @nathan-varughese Thank you very much for your nice words. Yes, I agree skipping the intro for replays would've been a good thing, but sadly I didn't get to it during the jam time. It got lost somewhere on the long to-do list.

@dom-de-re @pikkufighter Also thanks for your comments. Regarding a goal or the point in animating the carrots: Yes, initially I had the idea that the raised carrots should attack a nearby village as some sort of end goal. But I didn't get to implementing that and thus I made it a simple high-score game.

Very impressive game! Charming and difficult - I got 5050 points at the end and enjoyed getting every one of them. The difficulty curve was nice and the visuals and audio worked together to give it a tremendous sense of polish. Well done.

It was a lot of fun and while a bit chaotic this exactly made it nice. Great match for the theme and innovative and fun. The farmers scared reaction was amazing!! :D

Great game!

tiseno 2023-01-12 22:07

This was awesome, everything on point, the intro, the tutorial, the graphics, and gameplay, very impressive!

globul 2023-01-12 23:21

I like your pixelart ! very nice. The gameplay is fun and original ! Great game.

fancyreckless 2023-01-13 13:23

Really love the graphics and sounds fit them well too. Only thing is that I'd make intro skippable or a bit faster. Gameplay is challenging and fun, but my favorite part is animation you get when harvesting carrots.

kikiriki367 2023-01-13 20:03

Nothing smart to say, but i still wanted to say... Great game, a chefs kiss *muah*, perfect!

sheng-mai 2023-01-13 23:38

The pixel art is superb.

The first time you play it even after watching the tutorial you get very frazzled, the game is super hard later on and you have to go and harvest human souls when you're robbing around with crows.

I realised I could only save three souls and kept saving them up and ended up losing a bunch of them stupidly, but it would be a good idea to skip the beginning when restarting.

hi glad to see game by solo dev !! Game looks neat and good work on game mechanism. Gameplay was fun its a small arcade style game with nice attempt at vfx.

boaz4 2023-01-14 12:19

The art is amazing! The sound effects and sound direction in the beginning (with the witch/wizard walking) were my favorite sound effects, and I would have loved to see more of those throughout the rest of the game.

It took me more time than I expected to understand what the tutorial wanted from me, but after that I had a pretty good time. My wrist hurts from playing, so I'm not going to go back for a second round - but great game!

njmac 2023-01-15 02:32

Well done! I love the sound design; it was very satisfying to block those pesky crows! Also, the wizard spell intro was an effective way of drawing you into the game. Thanks! : )

magnanix 2023-01-15 04:01

This is awesome, I love the pixelated style, sound effects, and mechanics. My only issue was when dragging souls out of the farmers, then going to cut them - the interaction would start dragging the soul again instead of starting a cut. May have just been the tight loops I was doing with my mouse, but a solution may have been to stop soul dragging if their soul is exposed :3. Loved the entry either way :D!

skosnowich 2023-01-15 08:45

Thank you all for your nice comments!

@sheng-mai Yes, the limit of the soul count was never explained and honestly, looking back, I probably would remove it or set it way higher, so you could spawn armies of carrots. :carrot:

@boaz4 Glad you liked the beginning, if there were more time, I probably at least added a ending "cutscene". Can you describe what hindered you in understanding the tutorials faster or what I could change to make them more clear?

@magnanix I understand the problem, and yes, probably your loops then were too tight. I thought about disabling the dragging, but with it you wouldn't be able to extend the soul again and you would have to wait until it's pulled back, could be frustrating as well.

xandruher 2023-01-15 22:09

Haha that was a nice game. Simple and fun to play. The poor crows just wanted some carrots.

pazzi 2023-01-18 02:29

I'm not sure if it's a problem on my side, but the game just stays a white window- could anyone give me pointers on getting it to work? It looks super fun Q-Q

skosnowich 2023-01-18 08:24

@pazzi Hi, didn't hear of that problem until now, let's see what we can do:

Do you use the Windows, Mac or Linux build? Can you start it via Command Line and see if that gives any errors or warnings?

Alternatively, I also uploaded two compatibility rendering versions for Windows and Linux just now. They have the "CompatRendering"-suffix. Maybe you could give that a try, it might help.

joror 2023-01-18 21:19

Quite a frantic game! Snappy clicking was required, I did not do well  Interesting controls, but would have loved a bit of a rest / clear now and then to take a rest.

pazzi 2023-01-19 02:30

@skosnowich Ayy Thank you! It worked! Sorry I'm relatively new to code and this is my first LD jam, so I'm still bebe in basic knowledge ^~^ This is the best tutorial I've seen so far- and the gameplay is suuper satisfying on the second run xD
