The start and quit button don't seem to be working for me

nick-shooter 2022-10-04 01:46

@MerpADer That's unfortunate! They don't respond when you use the spacebar or arrow keys? Do you have any information on your specs?

tinytrebor 2022-10-04 01:47

Nice work on visual and sound the mecanics are a bit too long

merpader 2022-10-04 03:06

@nick-shooter Woops I didn't know there was no mouse inputs!

This is a really fun and well delivered game. The quick comedy mixed with the weird mood made this really fun to play!

harry-alissavakis 2022-10-05 09:09

Really fun and well-designed! Wish I could manage to finish the boss on stream but I kept running out of mana :(

Really great job though, and I really enjoyed the procedural backgrounds! :D

nick-shooter 2022-10-05 15:44

@harry-alissavakis Appreciate the kind words! We've pushed a patch that fixes the mana cost bug, so hopefully future players will have a bit of an easier time with it, haha.

nick-shooter 2022-10-05 15:57

@merpader Thanks for the review! We've added some text with the controls to the main menu, as that being unclear is a valid criticism.

w4yn3r 2022-10-05 18:29

Really great Soundtrack and hilarious characters and animations! Also have to admit that the 10 seconds for turn based are really intense :D But Characters stereotypes communicate elemental types pretty well, liked that!

After some minutes the background went pretty disturbing to be honest, but thats personal taste i guess :P

Overall pretty cool entry, huge respect!

Awesome game, beat it without dying, but felt very tense the whole time, very good job!

massena 2022-10-06 08:06

You managed to do a turn-based combat system that doesn't feel boring, well done :)

substain 2022-10-06 13:46

you put a lot of interesting attacks in there, the time component is cool too! Can you actually run out of time in the end fight?

nick-shooter 2022-10-06 15:05

@substain Thanks! The final boss is actually programmed to only use time drain 3 times, so your timer won't go any lower than 4 seconds. That would be an interesting fail state though, haha.

skel3ton 2022-10-06 18:33

i hate your Timemaster boss. When he killed me when he only had 6hp, I ragequit, cried and will try to beat him again tomorrow. I developed a love/hate relationship with him.

The graphics weren't bad, but it looks to me like it was made by people who couldn't match their art styles. The main character looks like he doesn't belong there and the whole background is so freaking weird and it really bothered me.

I like the originality of the whole concept, but also the little things, for example attacks from enemies. Stolen vowels will haunt me in my dreams for a long time. Good work. Love your job :)

minipeps 2022-10-07 17:44

Really great jam entry, well done to the team! I found the turn-based gameplay interesting and the different attacks very original (the pirate stealing letters or translating the attacks from your pool is so fun to me  )

Okay, so I recorded a video but something went wrong with the video settings? The game didn't go full screen, but it was the exact same size as my screen. Since Windows has the little details at the top, the bottom got cut off, which might have something to do with my video goofing up. I dunno.

All around, this was fantastic! I **LOVE** how enemies messed with my menu! That's such a creative idea, and you pulled it off so incredibly well. The backgrounds remind me of earthbound, and they look amazing. The character designs are fantastic too.

I beat the final boss! Ah man, again, sorry about the video not working. I feel like I have so much more to say, but I can't figure out what to write down. This is definitely one of the best games I've played this jam. Ah- the enemy attacks were *so creative*.

Wonderful job all around!

nick-shooter 2022-10-08 17:47

@100th-coin Thanks man! A lot of our time and resources went into coming up with fun ways to obstruct menuing, so I'm really glad to hear it panned out! Unfortunately there were some UI scaling problems we didn't have the time to figure out, so it's probably an issue on our end.

wolderado 2022-10-09 07:30

I really like these type of roguelike-deckbuilders (I mean, it's more like a spell builder). I enjoyed every moment of it! The mechanics and enemy attacks are very interesting. The heal was way powerful and health costs are too little to no use them but I rather play an easy-medium game than a super hard game. Music is fits really well too! Really good job!

nick-shooter 2022-10-09 15:41

@wolderado Thanks for the review! Yeah, balancing was a bit tricky, haha. When I was doing playtesting, people who played games like slay the spire steamrolled everything, while people who didn't play turn based games were struggling. So we decided early on to make it fairly easy so that just about anybody could complete the game. You make a good point for the more skilled players though, if we ever revisit this concept, we'll think about ways to throw them a bone too!

natpat 2022-10-10 04:56

One of the best games I've played this LD! While it's quite a simple concept, you really used the 10 second theme to put a twist on something usual and improve it. While it's a little rough around the edges and some of the graphics don't look as crisp as maybe they should do, it's a really fun little turn based battling game with some surprisingly deep mechanics! I thought the effects on my menu wouldn't affect me that much, but in the heat of battle, especially against the last boss, they really did.

The balance on the game was great too - the first three bosses were fairly straightforward but really made me learn the game and its systems, and let me customize my loadout in a way that wasn't overwhelming. Then the final boss was just on the right side of difficult - I had to try it 5-6 times, but each time I felt like I had made a fatal mistake that had put victory just out of reach. It's only when I played perfectly that I managed to scrape the victory (although looking at the other reviews, I'm just bad at the game )

The music was very fitting, sound effects worked well, and it felt like a complete package. Whilst the art maybe wasn't as cohesive as it could have been, it did all lend towards a general theme of fighting off evil. Good job!

@natpat Glad you enjoyed it! The difficulty seemed to vary pretty wildly for different people based on their experience with turn based games and which new moves they took, so I wouldn't worry too much about comparing runs, haha.

Yeah given more time we'd have liked to have done a second art pass, but I'm pretty happy with the mechanics we managed to cram in!

freerunner 2022-10-12 11:37

Cannot download Mac client, 404 :(

feynallein 2022-10-12 11:39

Really nice! Enjoyed playing it! Contratz

legitamte 2022-10-12 13:23

Okay, I really enjoyed this. I'm fascinated by games that make gameplay out of navigating the menu, and all the novel ways the bosses mess with you really delivered on that! Adding the spell selection after the minor bosses also really added a lot of satisfying decisions and replayability, both really hard to fit into a game jam, so kudos for that. On top of all that, the sound and visuals have a lot to love in a really unique style that helps you stand out from the pack. Only thing I could think to suggest is maybe SLIGHTLY more variety in your base move list besides varying levels of damage, but that's really minor. Overall a very impressive package!

nick-shooter 2022-10-12 14:37

@freerunner Hey, sorry about that. Should be fixed now if you wanna give it another go!

jeanbon 2022-10-12 14:53

I won! It was fun, there were many choices for the player although luck was a high part of it as well. I used Guard 80% of the time on the Time Master to recharge my mana safely and win. Some spells to recharge the mana would be welcomed.

@jeanbon Good point on the MP thing. I was considering adding some sort of MP drain move, or making guard restore a little bit of MP, but unfortunately we ran out of time. Definitely something I'll think about if we ever revisit the idea, though!
