Interesting idea) i really have fun to play this game) thank you!

cor-3 2021-10-05 05:11

This is an insanely well developed game. Has a very deep story, solid visuals and audio, and a really unique camera mechanic. It even comes with a manual! I do have to say a downside to this game is that my hand started to hurt from repeatedly pressing the arrow keys for so long. WASD would personally be great as an alternate control scheme. Overall, really well done!

der-mondhase 2021-10-05 19:41

Had a bit of troubles with the Green enemies, while juggling the controls. The idea, direction and mood are extremely solid!

disn 2021-10-05 20:30

This looks really well done, I'm digging the aesthetic a lot. To think this was done in three days... you guys are insane :)

mechazawa 2021-10-05 20:31

Great game really well executed! Only complaint is that I got a bit tired of tapping the arrow keys after a while

coryru 2021-10-05 21:44

@alina-baybulatova thank you so much. It was fun to make so I'm glad it was fun to play.

@cor-3 Thank you we worked hard on the polish of this game so I'm glad it worked out. And yes there is a manual and yes it is our favorite part. As for your note about the controls I get it. We tried to emulate older computer game control style and the downside of doing that we also emulated the frustrating aspect of those old control schemes as well. Which causes the game to be a tad tiring to control. We discussed WASD but opted out to keep it authentic but yes including it is a good call.

@der-mondhase AH the beast itself gave you problems! A good tactic is try to get some distance from it. Thank you for playing I'm glad you enjoyed the direction and mood we put a lot of work into it.

@disn Technically we pulled it off into 2 since we had to work Monday and couldn't work on the game. I appreciate you playing B1OCK and digging the aesthetic

@mechazawa Thank you! Yes the controls can get a bit tiring agreed. But hey we can just pretend that we were trying to make you feel like the character in the game and exploring is exhausting. Right? You buy that right...?

dannyk1994 2021-10-05 22:37

Very moody and nice story. Really enjoyed playing it, got killed right before the end which was frustrating haha Well done !

adrenallen 2021-10-06 00:43

Great concept, I really like the camera mechanic. Great format for a jam game, lots of space to build a world and story in a time constraint. I wish the rooms had more decor in them generally, even just basic tables or something to make each room more distinguishable. Overall great job!

dock-frankenstein 2021-10-06 05:58

Very nice game. Although spamming arrow keys for a long time wasn't that great. Making the maps smaller would probably fix that but don't worry, I read the manual.

This is a very moody game and it really feels like something you could play on an atari.

vsi 2021-10-06 08:21

Liked the graphs,gj!

mechazawa 2021-10-06 08:24

@coryru haha I'll take that as a valid explaination

bluecold007 2021-10-06 16:48

Nice game!! At the beginning, I didn't know the purpose of the game and wondered for a long time. The picture and music of the game surprised me, and the immersion was unforgettable. Although you can only move step by step, it makes your hands a little tired, but this does not prevent it from being a very good game! Look forward to future optimization!!

the-lame-brain 2021-10-06 17:12

Thank you for this game!

I didn't mind the arrow keys so much, but I am not sure how to get alternate endings. I feel like I interacted with everything? Did I miss something?

What did you use to make the game? It is so cool that it just comes as an exe!

Cheers! [-LB](https://ldjam.com/users/the-lame-brain/)

coryru 2021-10-06 18:30

@dannyk1994 Glad you enjoyed it! Yah I was watching your stream when it happened the beast got you on the last proof.

@adrenallen I'm glad the slow deliberate story telling came through. Yah a few more generic items in the rooms would have really tied the whole experience together.

@dock-frankenstein Thanks for checking out the manual and getting into the mood of the game. Smaller environment eh? Hmmm...

@vsi Glad you liked it. We wanted to take an minimalist approach at horror to see if we could get scares out of a simple graphic style. Hard to pull off but I think we nailed it.

@bluecold007 Unforgettable Immersion!!! That is probably the best praise we could get thank you so much! I'm glad you stuck with the game and figured it out after getting lost at the beginning. And yes the control scheme has some major fatigue issues.

@the-lame-brain Glad someone likes the arrow keys. Finally!!! Yah the alternate endings take a bit to find it involves a bit of backtracking and remembering items that you have examined. If you would like to know how to get those ending and want to revisit the game let me know and I'll tell you how. Privately I don't want to spoil it for others. HINT: Notice the Red walls and check back later. We made it with Game Maker Studio we felt like the EXE format added another scary layer to it.

jeff-kerman 2021-10-06 22:07

I enjoyed it, the theme and story were really good and added loads to the feel of the game. Am I dumb or could you not hold down arrow keys? Felt like I gave myself RSI lol.

denzil-gomes 2021-10-06 22:07

Very nice atmosphere to to this game. Reminds me of the Polybius mystery

zachsbutt 2021-10-06 22:25

very spooky, solid entry! i was able to complete the game, but i found it pretty difficult to find everything. it would be nice if you only needed like 70% of the proof and not 100% or something like that.

markveligod 2021-10-07 07:35

I really liked the story, great job!

chillertyp 2021-10-07 07:36

Retro graphics're nice.

gregoryblomquist 2021-10-08 02:53

@jeff-kerman Glad you enjoyed it! The late night coding really helped us lean into the story and atmosphere hahaha Nope! We were going for the clunky feel of Atari controls so each step is one press... Playtesting definitely made the ol' wrists bark!

@denzil-gomes Wow! Thank you so much for the comparison! As 90s kids, ghost stories/urban legends and video games are the perfect combo.

@zachsbutt Thanks so much! Yeah, hunting for the evidence definitely takes a while!

@markveligod Glad you liked it! We had a lot of fun writing it during our late night coding sessions!

@chillertyp Thanks! Mixing horror with simple graphics is tricky, but we love the final product!

adamcyounis 2021-10-08 04:34

Heya! Thanks for putting such a deep narrative in your game! I really like the minimalist style, and the camera mechanic was kind of genius. I've never seen anything like that before. I will say, the wall of text at the outset was a little off-putting, and am always appreciative of more measured pacing with this kind of exposition. In a way, it kind of feels more "80's", so it does kind of fit in a way.

I think the biggest let-down for me was the control scheme. having to press an arrow to move one space with no auto-fire on the key felt very straining after a while. I also would have *really* appreciated a "dungeon map" or "compass" (to use zelda terminology), to help navigate the office.

Beyond that, I love what you did with the game, super spooky and worth playing to see the different endings.

triggthediscovery 2021-10-09 00:05

Great atmosphere, I could feel the tempo of my key presses increase as I slowly got closer and closer to getting all the evidence, and as my health slowly drained to 0. While I expected there was some sort of alternate ending (dumb me didn't read the manual first) I'm kinda too terrified to go get all the evidence again, lol. Great work.

Edit: also, I forgot the voice acting. The idea that most/all the music (even the creepy droning) would be retro inspired, just to have a normal human talking in my ear was also great and absolutely terrifying.

rufson 2021-10-10 02:56

I was a little scared that after exe my computer will be unstable :scream: The retro aesthetic has the power to leave a large field of imagination and in the case of B1OCK with minimal Atari graphic and click like yostick buttons, the atmosphere is very dense. Red scared me, but yellow was faster than the camera flash. 13/13 and I'll be back at the door for the secret ending. Great mood!

local-minimum 2021-10-10 10:05

I got to 12 pieces of evidence before I abruptly died. I liked the story and the setting very much, but the controls were really taxing. It hurt having to press for each tile move. In combination with the level design forcing a lot of backtracking and being lost searching for what was missed it really lowered my enjoyment and was about to quit several times. If the key-pressing is needed for the retro-feel, I would still urge for a game-mode where key pressed keeps moving or even better binding that pattern to a controller :video_game:

zimny11 2021-10-18 22:12

Just wow. I got all clues and manage to get out. I love the music, art style and the music. I wounder, can you stop yellow thing from attacking, or you just need to run. Also, I was unable to get through the big door, so I guess there is a secret ending? That was an amazing game. It felt so tense! Great job!

sam-onella 2021-10-18 23:27

Great presentation and atmosphere! was really on the edge of my seat at some parts. My only complaint is that the yellow guys seemed unavoidable to me. Tried hitting them with the camera but it didn't seem to do anything. Ended up dying at 11/13 proofs found, which stunk cause I really wanted to see the ending. Awesome job all in all though, maybe I'll take another whack at it a bit later.

gr3yknigh1 2021-10-19 16:23

Oh noooo, I died when I collected all proofs. This ghost is insane! Anyway this is very atmospheric game!

messmerd 2021-10-19 17:05

Impressive game! The atmosphere is great. I'd suggest using different colored walls and floors to help distinguish the different departments and provide some variation since it's pretty easy to get lost. I died from the yellow guys, which made the game incredibly difficult to beat unless you know exactly where you need to go, which I didn't because I was lost half the time. I'd recommend making the yellow guys disappear if they go off the screen so that there's a way of escaping them if you can move fast enough, because right now they just create a timer until you inevitably die.
