So hyped by that voice. Art/ Sound choice is great

I cant think anything to add, It just feels amazing.

pavocado 2021-10-05 00:10

Ahh that was so fun to play! I'm so glad for the voiceover, it helped me so much (didn't realise I could double jump). Love the idea and the execution, great job!

jerem-watts 2021-10-05 00:33

@pavocado & @teddyincdev Thank you! This is my first ludum dare so my heart was pounding as I read both of your reviews!

I don't know how to perfectly express the excitement and joy I get when seeing such high praise for something I worked so hard on and feel so proud of.

brandondev 2021-10-05 02:36

Awesome work! Love the voice and sound effects. Feels like a finished polished game for sure. Kudos!

judy-kim 2021-10-05 06:34

The voiceover tutorial/hints is a really cool idea! The shooting and movements were satisfying and the game was not frustrating -- overall it was fun, super well-rounded and memorable :) noice

alina-baybulatova 2021-10-05 09:33

Awesome graphic!!! Good job) i really have fun to play this game) Thank you!!

chesiq 2021-10-05 13:36

Nice game, well polished, and I liked the fact you can upgrade your character and stuff! Pretty cool!

adrijanc 2021-10-05 13:50

Really Cool game. The Artstyle is pretty and consistent and the voice acting gives alot of charm. I had a small glitch when you dash in the air the player model glitches a bit. Other than that extremely cool game.

becky-rayner 2021-10-05 13:51

Love the art style and how clearly everything has been laid out! Very useful tutorial and love the voice/sound effects!! Well done, amazing you created this in such a short time

timur-bahadir 2021-10-05 18:47

Simlpe idea really well executed! The visuals were cool and the announcer was a nice touch!

zazz0000 2021-10-06 00:59

This is awesome all around. 10/10 voice acting, some voice lines literally made me laugh out loud

jerem-watts 2021-10-06 03:04

I'll try to answer you all at once to avoid spamming!

@brandondev Yes! I was worried I spent far too much time playtesting, even while recording I noticed myself losing focus and just mucking around with the engine BUT it seems all that was worth it to try to achieve that polished feel. Btw, I left a message on your game too in case you haven't seen it yet :)

@judy-kim Yeah! would you believe the voice also being a tutorial was a last minute decision? Actually I suppose almost all of the decisions feel last minute! Haha. It's super good to hear that it wasn't frustrating - one of my biggest received criticisms in the past and especially with this base code is that I've made the challenges too hard rather than scaling. So again, super duper good to hear that it's not frustrating! Thank you. Also, I loved the ideas behind lena and tubs! I really mean it when I said I'd like to see what you guys can make in the future!

@alina-baybulatova Such kind words! Thank you too! I saw your game as well, you were part of a really big team! I bet the project leader was pretty good to organize that many people.

@chesiq Dude thanks! I'm glad you had fun, I wish I had more time for all the upgrades I initially wanted! Ah well, I suppose that's just how it goes, huh? I just opened a link to your game - psychedelic horror! God damn I love that sort of thing. After I get this message out I'll more than likely download it and give it a go! :D

@adrijanc Damn I'm getting like, kind of emotional from all this positive feedback. Something about your comment just made it all feel more real. Thanks for letting me know about the dash too! I was considering taking it out but since I had it setup in the base code already I thought I might as well pop it in lol. I'm glad you say the art is consistent too! My biggest regret is using blender for the player, enemy and cage sprites because in the end I feel like handmade sprites would've been clearer and easier to animate - along with being able to get the lighting on the player character correct. Just had a look at your game's page, I'm a bit of a hoe for lowpoly 3d so you can be sure I'll add it to my que of tabs to check out today! I personally want to move to 3d permanently and probably will now too.

@becky-rayner Dude you're too kind! Like, really! Haha. Yeah! If you wanted some pointers on work ethic I made a spreadsheet with workflows for different processes from blender to video editing to 2d art to meal efficiency to 3d clothing to physics and those are just the umbrella topics. Also my personal brain-hack is that I know how much social pressure effects me. I use my weakness as a strength by recording myself work - you see if I'm recording myself then I will subconsciously avoid getting distracted because of how much I hate getting embarrassed. Also if you're curious about any specific part of the process I at least half-heartedly labeled the recordings in the playlist above! Lastly, just had a look at you're game and I'm really excited to check this one out because witches = Halloween and that is DEFINITELY my FAVOURITE theme EVER. xD

@timur-bahadir I'm really glad you liked it! Even more so now that I saw you made a furry game! Hahaha! Well I suppose it's not exactly furry... adding it to my que of games to check out - really hoping I have time today after work and checking out everyone else's!

@zazz0000 YEEESSS! I had a LOT of fun doing the recordings, especially "UNSTAAAAAAAABLE LOOOAD!" Hahaha! I remember laughing a lot merely while doing the voices. When I was thinking of a game by the end of Sunday i realized that it HAD to be that line! Oh - dude I just looked at you're game and I am PUMPED to get to that one! Those textures... those MODELS... it gives me massive bioshock vibes and boy HOWDY do I LOVE bioshock! xD

mouf 2021-10-06 08:51

Really good work ! I enjoyed to play it a lot, a bit hard at first but all the mechanics are great GG :D

sethios 2021-10-06 09:12

It took me a few attempts to put all the mechanics to good use, but it resulted in a fun experience. Destroying the enemies was pretty satisfying with all the UNSTABLE MATTER and screen shakes. It was easy to see where the player and enemies were with an art style that go easy on the eyes, and the voice acting is a cool addition. I found myself replaying a few times for fun, good job!

not-an-apple-a-stone 2021-10-06 09:36

Big fan of the idea but after a few rounds most aspects kind of lost their value, of course it was really enjoyable for that time. In the begining it was a bit confusing but the voice helped alot (and added so much to the experience)!

caeonosphere 2021-10-07 04:45

Hey, great voiceover! Would have loved to be able to hold the mouse button down instead of rapid clicking, felt like I was getting carpal tunnel towards the end there... cool idea having the enemies' debris damage each other. Definitely took it that next step towards satisfying the theme.

peachtreeoath 2021-10-07 19:32

Very impressive first LD entry, it's certainly clear that you've had some dev experience :)

My playthrough went something like this: 1. Initially I tried to play in the lower regions since I hadn't picked up on the movement patterns yet. I also invested a lot into the 25g upgrade with auto shoot because I thought it would eventually just let me sit there and AFK, which is always fine to see in upgrade heavy games. The combination of this led me to lose many times. 2. Eventually I realize I can stay on one of the upper left platforms and be able to hit many rows at once. I also invested a bit more into gun upgrades. This allowed me to get far, but then the platforms would drop out underneath me, and I kept dying soon after. I actually initially thought this was a bug, but your voiceover gave me a hint that it was intentional. 3. I realized (I think?) that you get more gold if you stay alive longer, so I would shoot enough to keep just 1 enemy alive, then go to the top and finish them at the last second. Around now is when I strictly bought gun upgrades. 4. Lastly, I connected the dots and realized I should just stay at the very top-middle platform and snipe. This would prevent me from falling to my doom when the platforms went away. After farming a few rounds like that, I slipped and fell, but I was strong enough at that point that I could sit on the lower-left ledge and kill everything. 5. At this point I could live forever as I only had to time my reload correctly when I opened up a big enough window to do so. I even purchased the Next Wave button a few times and had no problem. Really the only issue was finger fatigue lol, so I quit eventually.

I thought the concept was great and I love games with multiple build routes. As long as the game is hard enough (which yours is) it instantly adds a problem-solving component to the game as you try to pick apart what the best build is. Although I would've liked to see some more visually-impactful upgrades, you can only do so much in LD and the ones available were good enough.

Great job and I hope that breakdown gives you some insight!

bak 2021-10-08 05:30

Liked the visuals and the gameplay but some part of the game was hard to see for me. I think I think it would be better if thing like bullets and bullet casings are drawn a bit more exaggerated.

markveligod 2021-10-08 07:32

Oh gods, this is an amazing sounds :D

xedur 2021-10-08 13:03

The voice acting was fantastic and not something you often see on Ludum Dare projects.

The reloading could have used some work, I would have liked to see some indicator of the reloading process, but all I saw was "old casings" still being fired from the gun even though I was reloading.

I'm not sure of how this fits the theme though.

There was also a point where the platforms just vanished. If this was an intentional game mechanic, there should have been some indication that it was about to happen. The robots still kept on riding as if there were platforms, so I expect it was a bug.

predmada 2021-10-09 14:13

Amazing game and the voice acting was on point! Much nicer to have an announcer tell me how to do stuff 😁

zacharypinkham 2021-10-12 01:49

Loved the VO, the game felt great and looked really solid! I do think it would have been improved with more feedback (both visual and audio) for the reload, as well as maybe just speeding up the reload time. I didn't find that it encouraged me to aim more carefully, it just kind of rendered me useless for a bit. Still, had a great time!

jerem-watts 2021-10-12 13:35

@Mouf Yeah! In the end I was worried about the difficulty at launch. I've changed the pace of the game now so that it starts off a lot more forgiving and gives players a chance to listen to speaker guy! Haha

@sethios Ah man! Your comment made me feel so good I owe you a hug! I'm so glad to hear that I've managed to get people to a point of lesiure - even if it was brief! It's like farming karma ;u;

@not-an-apple-a-stone I completely agree - it needed more complexity. This comment along with my own desire to test my gamer zeal made me focus on adding that complexity in the update!

@caeonosphere Dude when I first saw this comment I facepalmed so hard, like, how did I not think to have holding down the mouse button as an attack!? It was a rookie dev mistake and I'm glad it wasn't hard to implement afterwards! Thanks a bunch for pointing it out man. Heh yeah I think the thought process was "how do I get the theme to fit what /I/ think is a good game?" Haha!

@peachtreeoath Very impressive attitude and well documented comment, it's certainly clear that you're a protagonist among men! This was an incredibly insightful comment and honestly it was what drove me to come back to the game the most! If we ever meet in real life I owe you a coffee - no! - two coffees!

@bak Yeah I remember while making it changing stuff and being really ho-hum about it. I'm glad you brought it up though because I really needed to look into rehauling the bullets and figuring out a more easy-to-understand reload.

@xedur I'm going to be honest because you were so honest, my first reaction to this comment was to get defensive and have a sook about the time limit of the jam but not a single one of your notes were things that I needed more time to do - I just needed to be wiser with my time.

@zacharypinkham Can't agree more! I built the base code back last year because I was actually frustrated with how simple it is to create solid controls and the contrast to AAA games that avoid implementing clean movement. If you have a second I bet you'd really like to see that I took your advice to the next level:

Very solid, relatively polished game. The music really immersed me into game, the sound effect gave me the feeling of impact in the stage, it makes every bullet and tank destruction felt across the screen. The voiceover is literally a cherry on the top of the game and the fact that it clearly conveys what the game wants you to do makes it probably one of my favourites of this jam. The 2D pixel graphic only adds onto it, the upgrades are balanced enough that even if you're stocked, you can still die by accident, so really good job on the balancing part.

There's only maybe 2 things I could say about this. More variety of tanks like a light tank for example that moves faster than the regular ones, or a slow one with more hitpoints, when the announcer said "I have a bad feeling about this", the platform disappeared which shocked me the first time, but what you can do is make that a random event happening as opposed to just the platform disappearing such as increased health points or speed on the tanks, or you suddenly losing all your upgrades for the duration of the round. Those are just among some of the randomness that could add to the "unstable" theme of this game. But yea, other than that, very good job on the jam!

tricky-fat-cat 2021-10-17 20:40

Small cohesive submission. Well done.

negator2vc 2021-10-20 13:47

So much fun! Excellent combination of tower defense and platformer! Excellent graphics and that voice was soooooooo good ;-) Great job! By the way the latest update don't start (at least for me). I had to download a previous update to play the game.
