A pretty well made game. I like how not being able to mine up or mine in mid air added a little more strategy to the gameplay so you couldn't just mine randomly. It also felt really satisfying to get upgrades and go much faster. However, that made it frustrating to get to the next depth level only for everything to be reset to their original slow speed. I played through depth level 1 and 2, but quit once I got to 3 since it got repetitive. I also feel that the game being so similar to Motherload makes it look a bit worse in comparison. Overall, a solid entry. Nice work!

Great job! Getting a fully working (and good) gameplay loop going in a jam is not easy. Like the previous comment says, having to mine while grounded actually keeps it engaging. Could use some more polish to really sell the digging and the mechanics, but it's a jam, so that's pretty much always the case and it didn't stop me from enjoying my time with it.

pbg 2021-04-27 12:19

As the above commenters have said, the digging mechanics are really good. I could have used some more visual cues to indicate why you cannot dig in midair, but I got it eventually. Classic digger game! I would like to see this fleshed out.

@superpokeunicorn Thank you very much for the feedback, it has most of the inspiration from Motherload ;) I can imagine you stopped at level 3. There was not much time left so I had to cut things out.

retro-banana-man-nl 2021-04-29 16:54

@john-chapman Thank you for your kind words

retro-banana-man-nl 2021-04-29 16:55

@pbg Not sure if I'll flesh it out at some point. Although there were a lot of ideas I wanted to add, if I do I'll keep you posted!

nikl 2021-04-29 17:32

I love this kind of game. The grid based navigation is a very good idea here in my opinion. Fuel or some other mechanic to stop you from being underground the whole time would be nice (but also would bring it even closer to Motherload ^^).

retro-banana-man-nl 2021-04-29 17:38

@nikl Thank you for playing! I agree, I wanted to add something like fuel it would've made it harder and probably also more enjoyable. I didn't had the time unfotunately, thank you for the feedback

maybeagoose 2021-04-29 17:41

Nice game for this theme

retro-banana-man-nl 2021-04-29 18:22

@maybeagoose Thanks for playing!

Pretty fun to play. Biggest complaint is that pretty much all of the audio was not fun to listen to. The strategy with mining made it interesting enough to play until completion. I think it would be best to look into generations in the ground other than ores. Enemies would have made this game significantly more interesting.

exofrenon 2021-04-29 23:24

This was fun to play and could become very addictive after a while. Great implementation of the theme also.

I liked the mechanic that you could only dig if you had ground below you. It was a nice addition that added some necessary depth to the game, since without it things would get boring pretty fast. I can't put my finger on it, but I felt like something was missing. Maybe a couple of mechanics could spice things up, fuel for example like the others mention, or even something to make the drilling more involved, maybe a specific kind of rock tiles that you would need to spam the click button to break? I don't know. Also, I didn't get why you had both a shop to convert rocks to money and an upgrade building to spend the money. They could be one and the same to reduce the back and forthing.

Finally, I think that the game would benefit a lot by better graphics. It doesn't have to be anything amazing. I would suggest you start looking into pixel art even if art is not your thing. It is quite easy to get into for everyone and after a while you will be surprised with what you can achieve. A simple rule tile to break the monotony of the ground and some particle systems when a tile is broken would also make a difference in the "juicyness" of the game.

Other than that, cool idea, nice implenetation, the core loop was there, I didn't notice any bugs. A job well done for a first solo jam.

nachodlv 2021-04-29 23:29

I really enjoy the game. The upgrades felt really powerful making the progression entertaining. I lost my progression twice when pressing the key "Esc" trying to close the upgrades menu. I loved playing Motherload and I loved playing this game. Good Job!

shone 2021-04-30 10:34

I couldn't get the shop to work, was I missing something? Nice game though

retro-banana-man-nl 2021-04-30 10:55

@offdutyextractors adding enemies is actually a pretty good idea. If I'll continue to work on it I should implement that! Thanks for playing and the feedback @exofrenon thanks for playing and the feedback. I agree some extra mechanics would help and in hindsight one shop could've been sufficient. Also I agree on the art I wanted to put more time into it, but instead I figured out how to make random level generation. The audio is dat from OK I agree, it was too add some sounds because a silent game is even worse in my opinion. @nachodlv thanks for playing! Ooh that's unfortunate, I should've made it first show a message are you sure to quit.

retro-banana-man-nl 2021-04-30 10:57

@shone you can sell your ores at the shop by pressing space on the Right there is an upgrade house, you can press space and buy upgrades for your drill. Thanks for playing

melhem-fares 2021-04-30 15:20

Firstly, I can tell you were trying to make a Motherload clone (or maybe it's just a coincidence). I was thinking to do the same to be honest because I loved that game. It would be nice if there was a visual cue to show that you sold your ores, because at first I thought the shop didn't work. I get that making clones is an easy and fun way to practice game developing, I have done it too. Overall, a solid first entry, keep it up.

someone 2021-04-30 19:09

Ah Motherload. This brings back memories. It plays well, though some kind of sound when you are full would have been nice. I kept not realising and this. Also the shop being so far from the upgrade place seemed unnecessary busy work. I think it would have been better to combine the two.

siberpunk01 2021-05-01 01:53

It was fun, but sometimes I can't drill the blocks in front of me and I'm not sure why. Also it would be cool if the upgrade store could do the goods conversion instead of having to go to the shop first.

retro-banana-man-nl 2021-05-01 11:53

@melhem-fares You are correct not a coincidence, I didn't have enough time to diverge from the basic game. It took me a while to get the random level generation to work, but I learned a lot by it so I don't mind. I cut the visual cue's to safe time, I don't say it was a wise decision  Thank you for your kind words and playing the game.

@someone It brought back memories for me too. I agree in hindsight I should've combined those. Thanks for playing!

@siberpunk01 You can't drill when hovering in the air, so that might be it. I agree that I should've combined those. Thanks for playing!

baconinvader 2021-05-03 11:24

Very nice game! Quite addictive. Reminds me of a mobile game I used to play lol

domsse-interactive 2021-05-05 14:30

Nice Game and great Art. I spend a lot of time in this Game. :D

retro-banana-man-nl 2021-05-15 18:04

@baconinvader Thanks for playing! Glad you liked it  @domsse-interactive Thank you for the compliment, great to hear!

qfeys 2021-05-16 19:19

I remember playing Motherload, so this did not seem particularly innovative ;).

Well made though. The graphics are good. Only unfortunalty that the text on the buildings was scribbled like that. It dropped the apparent quality by quite a bit.

Sound was not to bad, as long as I played it rather softly.

The game felt somewhat slow at times, but overall, it was an enjoyable game.

retro-banana-man-nl 2021-05-24 09:09

@qfeys thanks for playing and for the feedback. I really appreciate it :)
