TODO: review game

mudlee 2021-04-26 07:18

A very depressing one. Two things. First: the collision sometimes doesn't work, took me some minutes to realize it :) Second: I could't manage to collect all boxes in the end on the second level or at least something went wrong, because I couldn't go to the next level. The mood itself is really good!

crispybun 2021-04-26 16:11

@mudlee Yeah, I shoul've put more thought into the collisions. The collision itself isn't broken, it's just that the hitbox is really small which makes it feel wonky. And I haven't put too much time into level design, so I'm pretty sure there's some boxes that are in weird spots and hard to find. Thanks a lot for the feedback!

creepyface 2021-04-26 17:29

I had fun playing this! the concept is cool and the way it was executed if also amazing,, i had chills when i saw the black line following me lol

negabyte 2021-04-26 17:33

I really enjoyed this. The atmosphere and tone were spot on.

thezingthing 2021-04-26 17:45

Set the mood perfectly. The art direction and the harrowing piano notes fit really well together. One issue I have is that I don't think you should be able to skip the menus using the movement keys as you could skip something while just trying to move around.

crispybun 2021-04-26 17:48

@creepyface @negabyte Thanks a lot!

@thezingthing Ah yeah, good call. The texts in between levels at least have a slight cooldown before you can skip them, but I didn't wanna do that for the game over screen so that you don't have to wait at all to try again. But yeah, making it ignore movement keys didn't occur to me. Thanks!

I played your game! Check it out! 05:00 https://youtu.be/DHfy_7ZtjHk

icefallgames 2021-04-30 21:53

Very nice... simple to pick up. I got to level 4 or 5 before I found it too difficult. Very moody!

bytinggames 2021-04-30 21:59

Solid moody game, wish it had more story though, but the little text snippets kept me going :D Gameplay had the right difficulty for me. If there would have been more level, more variation in gameplay would have been good, but with the current length I think it's fine this way. Reminded me of Slender but in 2D bullet hell^^ The beginning of the game stood out most to me, because it was a really good introduction to the controls and the mood. Like how that appearing light revealed stuff. Also I like that you have chosen an idea that is unique.

crispybun 2021-05-01 17:42

@barelyevengames I watched the clip, thanks! You mentioned the difficulty being inconsistent a few times, and yeah, I just made the levels as pretty much the last thing and I kind of didn't bother to order them well.

@icefallgames Thank you! Yeah, I suppose I should have made it easier, a lot of people get stuck, but quite a lot of people also said the difficulty is good. Obviously if I'd add to this I'd make some sort of difficulty setting.

@bytinggames Thanks a lot! There is a bit of a lore under all of it, but I just made the texts and some other stuff vaguely hint at it mostly to add a sort of unknown vibe, but I just made it way too methaphorical to have anyone make up a good idea of what the story could be lol.

edur 2021-05-02 12:30

Scary stuff,great atmosphere with the art and sound.

digital-bacon 2021-05-02 12:32

An interesting game. The graphics and audio really helped set the mood, while the gameplay was clear but challenging, though I found the difficulty was a bit erratic. Good work!

huntrox 2021-05-02 12:37

Very nice nice art style

crispybun 2021-05-02 12:41

@edur Thanks!

@digital-bacon Thank u! Yeah, the difficulty is a bit all over the place. I didn't really arrange the levels in a way that made sense lol, they're just in the order that I made them.

@huntrox Thank you!

itskdog 2021-05-02 12:43

I liked how after you collected the boxes you had to then hit the enemies to go to he next level. Good job!

shin0nome 2021-05-02 12:43

Wow ! The game set the mood very fast and very well ! I liked how you managed the tutorial (note on the ground), great idea ! Also fo a Compo game it's very impressive ! Just a question : how did you add this sizzle effect with Game Maker Studio 2 (i'm curious) ? Good job !

escapade 2021-05-02 12:45

Really underrated game, extremely impressive given you had only 48 hours. I especially like how the screen gets more static as you collect more boxes, and the short statements that act as compelling storytelling as well as transitions between levels. Mood was perfect. It didn't really have a clear ending but I guess that was your intention wasn't it?

jrevel 2021-05-02 12:48

That's dark ! simple gameplay, yet very effective to set the mood :)

crispybun 2021-05-02 13:06

@itskdog Thank you!

@shin0nome Thanks a lot! I always try to make the tutorial as quick to the point as humanly possible lol, no one likes to deal with tutorials, *especially* in game jams. For the static, I made a custom shader using GLSL. Someone called Xor made really good [tutorials](https://xorshaders.weebly.com/tutorials/shader-basics1) to get started with GLSL in gamemaker.

@escapade Thank u! Yeah, I made the story behind it really unclear and hard to make out, which includes the ending lol. Maybe not the best choice, but it was mainly about the experience, not a story being spoon-fed to the player :d

@jrevel Thanks!

benjamin-leroy 2021-05-02 13:07

I found that the game was fun to play, the simple graphics fit well with the game world (especially since making a game alone is already complicated) Congratulation to you for your little narrative game :smile:

darqweful 2021-05-02 14:39

Finished the game, the ending was chilling. Everything felt ominous, from the darkness to the ticking sound of your footsteps. There were some issues with the colliders but they were manageable. Really good entry, overall.

tanis 2021-05-02 15:22

I liked the mood of the game. It feels dark and spooky at times and it conveys the sensation that something bad is going to happen if you don't get to the boxes quickly enough. The hitboxes are a bit wonky, but overall I liked it. Nice one :)

saintchristopher777 2021-05-02 15:32

Tone on this game is spot on. The art, lighting, sound, and effects all work together perfectly. Good work!

exopunk 2021-05-02 15:46

Just finished it and i loved it, the aesthetics are on point together with the phrases between the levels they set an awesome mood for the game. I liked how the enemies could give you a little hint of where the boxes are with their lighting, overall it was a really nice experience, very well done!

crispybun 2021-05-02 16:11

@benjamin-leroy Thank you!

@darqweful Thanks a lot! I'm glad the sounds are good lol, it's nice knowing it pays off to actually create the sounds specifically for the game and not just use a generator.

@tanis Thankss! Lol I'm realising the hitboxes are hard for me to notice when I'm making the game since I literally know exactly where they are, lol. It's a recurring problem, I'll try to work on it :p

@saintchristopher777 Thanks a lot!

@exopunk Thanks! Yeah, it was a bit of a side effect of the bullets having lights, but I really liked that it made it a valid strategy to just dodge them for a bit and look in the areas they're revealing.

xariusexcl 2021-05-03 17:30

Wow that was a moody one! A nice take on the theme. Fitting graphics and music. I think you got the hitboxes mostly right, it would've been a nightmare if they were too big. Maybe 2 colliders (one for enemies and a bigger one for items) would've solved it. Also I'm jealous of you for getting the time to do shaders in your game :laughing: Congrats!

janos-paradi 2021-05-17 21:20

really cool game, the mood is perfect and the art style fits sooo well
