I like the graphics, but the combat seems really hard, even on the first slime/ghost enemy. Could use a bit of polish in the movement and combat. But some good ideas

Liked the art and works fine on Linux with Wine. Controls do feel sluggish and not very responsive. Think game would be much improved by a bit more polish on that front.

nice game - cool idea - fits the theme - but the movement dosnt feel very good also the attacking is slow so its very hard to play

Nice concept. I feel that the "going insane" thing could be a little more involved. Fighting is really hard, I didn't manage to kill the second group of enemies (two green slimes) no matter what. I'd also suggest to make the tutorial text larger & use a brighter font color (dark-brown on a dark-brown background is really painful to read). Anyways, nice job!

I liked the pixel art style. I see that you were experimenting with a concept for making each death cost something which was cool. I agree with the other comments so won't restate. Nice job making a game in 48 hours!

The art, theme, feel and sound were all amazing - probably one of the prettiest games I've tried so far! I also really like the mechanic of insanity, but I would have not linked it to lives as that means that when you are already struggling, it makes things even worse. Maybe it could have been just simply the further down you go, the more insane you become. It would also be great to get some advance warning of when the next insanity effect will hit. I.e. having the breathing a few seconds before.

Lastly, this might be part of your theme but the movement felt a bit unresponsive at times (in particular the attack).

The insanity mechanic was very unique, and I liked your sound design!

The art for this game is really good! I think the music was a little rough but got the job done and the sounds work well. The gameplay is a bit slow, I think having different jump heights based on how long the player holds space would make the platforming feel a bit better. The combat was probably the roughest part. When attacking it was hard to tell when it would work. Overall this was an interesting idea and a good entry.

Great art style with cool shaders and sound to represent the increasing insanity, also the page flipping when you lost a life is pretty... well, pretty ;-)

The fighting system seems a little bit hard and random (you don“t see when the enemy is going to hit and you cannot stun the by hitting or something like that), but the presentation of the game is great!

The Background sound fits also, overall, a cool entry!

The overall presentation is really good, particularly the effects of losing your sanity, I liked those a lot. It does feel a little strange that the game specifically makes it harder the worse you do, so someone who is skilled enough to avoid dying has the easiest time versus someone who is already struggling a bit. It didn't cause too much of an issue for me personally, but it may be worth playing around with different implementations to really strike a perfect balance with it.

As others have said, the combat does feel a little strange too, but I think it's actually not far off from being really good. I think the core mechanic of it is good, it just needs to be made a little faster and more responsive feeling (still lessening with sanity is good though!). Fighting the monsters the way I would expect to was pretty tricky as is, I ended up largely cheesing it by hopping on top of them and whacking them every time I went down. I think if it were given just that little bit more speed and responsiveness to make for a more hit and run style gameplay it could be really solid.

Overall I really like it though. It needs a little refinement, as compo games do, but it definitely has a lot going for it!

The game is nicely made, graphic and audio is nice. Wait time between attack is very high, enemy is very fast does not give much time to attack and for some reason the player does not like to face left as soon the button is released player turns back to the right to attack the enemy on the left have to jump on the other side and attack. These are just some minor problems.

Overall the game is playable, the effects are good, player going sane as he loses health intensifies the trapped inside the dungeon situation.

Nice game :D

megastrons 2021-05-04 16:54

The game is a little slow and the combat is a little difficult. But the graphics are interesting.

Great graphics and sound. The black text on a dark brown background is *very* hard to read however

dylan-fries 2021-05-05 20:58

Graphics are super nice, I liked the character and environment art. I thought the music was very class NES and enjoyed it. The combat was a bit finicky, it felt like you had playtested it only yourself and were used to the exact measures needed ;) Perhaps a knockback effect would help as well. Tightening up the jumping and movement would also help this a lot. It feels like a unity rigidbody, so you might want to try increasing both the drag and the jump/movement force, which will make it feel a little more explosive and less floaty. Between those two variables and the mass you can get a lot of different gameplay feels. A font for the title is also a quick and easy touch that adds a lot to a game. I thought the idea of losing control of the player was really cool and you should explore that in more detail. Good effort for a Jam and I hope you keep at it!

morcado 2021-05-05 21:39

Nice concept, but it has a lot of work to do. You can improve movement and the attack. There are more things you can add. Good job

Nice job with this game! I really like the idea of going deeper in this dungeon and just losing sanity as you die and restart. I think you coulve made the insanity effects a bit more apparent. Stopping you from moving is a bit unfortunate, but I like the screen distortion, visual and audio effects, beef those up when youve died more! The combat was also nearly impossible because I wasnt sure how to hit enemies without getting hit yourself, and they take way longer to kill than you do to die. I couldnt get past the drop down to fight the 2 slimes on the first lvl because of that. Regardless, I think you did a great job and had a super interesting idea. Nice job!
