That was fun but still have to work on it good job :v:

I can't even imagine the work needed to do a 3d game for this compo, half my time was spent debugging a 2d game! But hey, I'd imagine the flying cars aren't a bug, more so the citizens of loopedy island found the only way to escape- through the skies...!

douwe-ravers 2020-10-06 18:56

@finalforeach Yeah yeah, that's totally it :D Hahaha

Along with the feature of flying cars, I'd say that the car controls feel a little bit too unforgiving, making it a challenge to roam at a high speed without being constantly stuck in the walls. In any case, I wish you to find proper solutions for the Godot issues; btw. out of curiosity, was there a specific reason why did you go with Godot for example instead of Unity, and do you have any tips for others how to avoid the issues you've faced based on your experience? :)

I liked it but controls were really difficult to get used to. Took nearly 900mb of ram to load that sucker up in Chrome :) Nice job though, was fun hitting ramps reminded me a bit of crazy taxi on dreamcast in some little way.

Good use of the theme, and cute vehicles, but not great in the gameplay department - it's just driving in circles and trying to avoid flipping over/smashing into other vehicles/running off the very thin track/etc, while dealing with physics and control jank ,which admittedly could've been a side-effect of the web player. Got some potential with polish and the likes, but not great in its current state.

(Disclaimer: being an avid fan of Jalopy, the Truck Sims, and having made my own sim a while back using OSM data to allow for freely going on road trips wherever, I am heavily biased towards slow, realistic vehicle controls that'd work well in a game about driving on the open road, as opposed to hectic racing games, so some of this is very likely on me.)

@scsc Well I chose Godot mainly because I know that engine the best but also because the GDscript (programming language of Godot) is actually very easy and thus fast in development compared to C# or C++. Although there is a loss in efficiency for a jam that doesn't really matter that much.

As for the bugs I think the problem lies with the Island itself. It is a very big mesh, for the entirety of the terrain there are 100 000 vertices and over 200 000 triangles, now I would have made a simpler low poly terrain that has far less detail... So overall keep the assets small in memory size I would guess... Ohh and instead of multithread loading use the build-in ResourceLoader it works with Html export as well :)

@simplepotential haha never looked at that, explains a lot :D

@cliffracerx thanks for the feedback. I agree! There was so much I wanted to do but bugs kept me from doing them... This was a good lesson about the additional complexity of 3D physics based games. Although I must say, I never learned more during a jam as this one.

I finally managed to get around the loop with a score of 1068! The turning has a very strange non-linear feel to it, where you're barely turning at all for the first half second and then you're suddenly turning 5 degrees every frame, and high speeds only seem to exacerbate the issue. I found that slow and steady was the way to go. Also the cars on the far side of the island were hovering ten feet over the road...?

I had considered trying to make a racing game, but figured it would be too hard. Way to take on the challenge!

At some points other cars were flying and I found some stairs:

(in the background you can see the flying cars)

I like the hud - it is really nice that you can check all the time the controls. But handling the car wasn't easy. Overall the game could need some more work. That isn't meant any negative. I also have tried to make a car game a couple of times and I never got one finished yet. Balancing a vehicle really isn't easy. Imho you achieved a lot within the given time! It may just was too much for one weekend.

pvg 2020-10-08 18:02

Is that really your first 3D jam game? Well done! Keep up the ambitious work.

douwe-ravers 2020-10-09 10:16

@tomate-salat yeah you are totally right, I spend the entire first day just balancing the car... And it didn't even work 😅 The flying cars I'm aware of but didn't had the time to fix it...

@pvg yeah 😅 I have experimented with procedural planetary generation and terrain generation but this is the first time making an actual game with controls and such haha

automatonvx 2020-10-11 11:29

Finished with a score of 1397, I admire your ambition going for a 3d car game in a 2 day jam. I took 3 days to try and make a sort of similar 3d car game and ran out of time to add any cosmetic terrain features, so i appreciate the effort. Obviously its a bit buggy (saw plenty of flying cars), but I had fun trying to control my car around the wacky little world. The fact that the car is hard to control is part of the fun to me. I found it quite hard to judge the position of the bonus hoops, maybe they need a drop shadow or something. Trying the web version I ended up having to kill firefox in Task Manager and used the windows one, which still felt like it didn't run particualrly smoothly. Good effort

jk5000 2020-10-18 14:52

I like the game idea. Both the graphics and sounds are good for combo game. I wish the controls was better, and the AI cars often hovering a bit over the ground. But overall a fun little jam game. Well done.

zachz 2020-10-19 06:14

It looks like you've already got a lot of good feedback from the LD community. But I really want to say that this was awesome for a first jam. Pulling off art, audio, and programming that well I thought it was a team project. Remember to rate more games!

douwe-ravers 2020-10-19 08:55

@zachz Thanks a lot :) I must say it is not my first jam though, it's actually my third but it was the first time creating a 3D game. My actual first jam was way worse then this was haha

vphyre 2020-10-19 18:03

Very interesting game. I really like being able to drive dangerously fast, looking for ramps hahaha. The graphics are cool, and the sound is good. Although I witnessed some crashes in the audio, but I imagine it is because of the HTML5 version. Anyway, the experience was really fun, I think you're on the right track. Congratulations.
