Really fun game. It was a bit confusing at first, but as I discovered the cards and upgrades, the game started to make sense. One thing it could use is some way to undo placing a card. Maybe limit it per round so that it doesn't become too OP.

Thanks for the feedback @mikdionio! I did think about an undo feature at some point on Saturday, but the problem is that it would give players the ability to kinda see the top cards of the deck, since you draw a card each time you play one, and then revert everything and play with the knowledge of what they will draw. Any clever solution to implement the undo without this problem would be greatly appreciated!

Really like the game system and concept. One thing i wasnt a fan of was art style. Would have loved to seen 2d art instead of pixel art for this genre but other than that , Amazing game great work for a 72 hr jam !

konstantin-mishurov 2020-04-23 14:32

Nice music.

llewellyn-and-michael 2020-04-23 14:51

Pretty awesome, i died so close to the end  , i think this is a really good idea, but it could be made more complex also I would like to be able to pick up cards I've put down. Cool music though :v:

pixelcrustpunk 2020-04-23 14:56

Really good once you get it. What messed me up was i didn't know how much food i had in the deck and couldn't get all the 77food. maybe show the player how many cards they still have in their deck. :) really thought through for a jam game <3

brandon-gonzalez 2020-04-23 15:32

Hey cool game !

I agree an "undo" option would be more user-friendly but then, as you said, it would contradict some rules of the game, so I don't know how to do it.

Also, I was not able to see my cursor during the game. Maybe I am the only one with this problem.

But the game is really cool. With more polish and maybe a bigger adventure, this could be a really good smartphone game. Congratulation !

kosmik123 2020-04-23 16:23

This game is awesome. I played it for very long. At the beginning I died so many times but after all I discovered how to play it properly.

I would suggest adding some graphical art to cards to make them more distinguishable and good looking, because after some time, it became tiring to read the names all the time.

Thanks everyone again for the feedbacks!

@slurp1e and @kosmik123: I would have loved to have better and more graphics in general, but as an engineer I was not the right person to do it, and unfortunately I could get Francesca to work on it only for a few hours.

@pixelcrustpunk you can see the amount of cards in the deck in the bottom-right corner, it might be a good additions to add also the possibility of opening the deck and seeing which actual cards you still have there.

@brandon-gonzalez what platform did you run the game on, so that I may try to catch and fix the bug?

pixelcrustpunk 2020-04-23 17:48

The UI is something to improve on if you decide to keep working on this. But this is a nice proof of concept :)

brandon-gonzalez 2020-04-23 19:48

@tommy I was playing on itch.io, with Microsoft Edge as browser, and I have a Windows. Don't know if it helps =)

daniel-moreno 2020-04-23 19:55

Great game overall! I like the graphics, they could use a bit more color or contrast but they do the work. If you go for pixelart, maybe the HUD could be pixelart too, so it makes more sense. As others said, it can be a bit confusing at first, and there are maybe too many rules or too many things to do for a new player. This is exactly the kind of game that needs a step by step tutorial, but this is a jam game so I get that there's no time for that (just in case you want to keep working on it!).

alia-zanetsu 2020-04-23 21:40

I was really in. The game is complex just enought, and some "fail" games are needed to understand the mecanism. Really cool entry !

hwaet 2020-04-25 03:52

This is a fun entry! I love how hard it is, though I agree with the others that an undo would be great. If I could suggest anything, it would be a little animation to the card shuffling/dealing. So when a new card comes from the player's deck, they get a little satisfying visual treat rather than cards spawning in place. This was a good direction for this theme, too. Well done!

kris-casimir 2020-04-25 04:02

I just want to say that I love that extra people appear in the background after each level, that is a sweet detail.

johannimations 2020-04-27 21:36

Really tricky! Complicated at first, but great balanced mechanics once you get it. Some more explanation would definetely help, i kept dying without knowing the exact reason. But this entry hit the theme on point, great fun idea for a full game i would say. There are so many possibilities to expand on what you already have. Don't know how people come up with these theme based ideas in such a short amount of time. ;)

aguahervida 2020-04-28 00:15

Wow this was hard :v The game shows a lot of information in just 1 sec, so is kind of difficult to actually learn the mechanics just by reading. Once you get it tho, you can really feel the game in motion, I would add something like return a card to my hand, there where so many times I just fucked it up and couldn't do anything about it u.u

Add a better tutorial and you would have a reeeeeaaally cool game. This was a really good work, is impressive, congrats.

francesco 2020-05-01 16:52

Simple but efficient, I got into it and it entertained me a while !

I liked the minimalist percussions soundtrack which fits the theme, and also the way the background changes as the population grows (took me some time to notice it). More explanations about the strategy of discarding and copying cards would be nice because it's not easy to figure out those mechanics in early game.

jamioflan 2020-05-02 22:36

That was awesome! I played for almost an hour, and still only managed to get to year 37. There was loads of depth and it really felt like I was learning the cards and mastering the rules. The one major problem I had was that the Raiding card upgraded from a net positive food gain to a food loss card and I had not planned for that at all! My general strategy was to upgrade each new card to rank 3 before making copies, so I couldn't go back and get a food-positive raid card :(

shevek 2020-05-08 20:05

awesome, a little too difficult for me, but i love the concept.
