Good game. If I had one suggestion it would be to feed information to the player over time. The first screen hist you with a bunch of buttons that you have to memorize for skills that it doesn't appear that you start with, and no information on what those things are other than their key binding. Might be easier for the player if you start small, say just move and shoot, and then gradually introduce plant, heal and grenade in later waves.

The graphics are really good, i play and its fun too

ynk 2020-04-21 09:42

Hard to play and hard to understand. I tried to punch the buttons but most of the time nothing seemed to happen. Probably some deeper or more progressive explanations would help to undertstand the game :)

desertmaw 2020-04-21 10:17

@ynk @jimmothysanchez Thank you for your reply. We planned making it a bit more intuitive or introduce the different elements with a tutorial but sadly the time was to short

marcusnystrand 2020-04-22 08:35

Impressive piece of work to be made in this short amount of time. Well done!

ponypen 2020-04-22 08:36

Could definitely do with a tutorial as I'm not the brightest when it comes to games and got 'stumped'. Also this happened when I was playing?? Screenshot 2020-04-22 at 09.35.05.png The graphics are nice and it ran okay until that error and the game closed! Loved the sound effects. Good job!

What a lovely little slime! Easy mechanics and gameplay. Wish you good luck.

Beautiful graphics (especially enjoyed the blood effect), I loved how the lumberjacks encroached on your forest and built new buildings, it really made you feel like you were losing control. I never figured out the point of planting, and I agree with @jimmothysanchez that I felt a bit overwhelmed by all the controls at the very being. Still, great game!

vernalbehemoth 2020-04-22 08:47

Nice concept and it was a great idea to have the controls on the floor so you can review them easily. Maybe provide a bit more feedback on what to do to interact with objects when you are able to do so. Having said that, in the time you had for this it is a great achievement!

curtis-pelissier 2020-04-22 08:58

I like this game so much. I was try harding since 15 minutes, and then I pressed space to use my special and the game crashed with the same message than @ponypen

belindatesigames 2020-04-22 08:58

I liked this game =D Even if it took me some time to understand it^^ I liked the graphics a lot =)

marlo 2020-04-22 09:04

Lovely little game, only problem is that - like @ponypen said - the game crashes when you get up to the harder waves in WebGL. It would be great to see a difficulty curve, because at some point there are just way too many enemies to deal with. I don't know how you've done the wave system, but if you made more enemies with different colors, you would just need to spawn a small amount of enemies the player could handle, instead of spawning 7 tracktors and 35 normal enemies. Overall tho, this game is great! Thanks for participating!

Oh no! I microwaved this game and now my cat is on fire, my house is hunted and my neighbors turned into zombies! They weren't kidding - do not microwave this game!

Very pleasant game and quite fun! Not sure what the purpose of planting corn was, though. I liked that you left the controls right there embedded in the world, it was brilliant and very helpful.

Incidentally, we also made a game about defending the tree for this jam :)

desertmaw 2020-04-22 09:36

@fabula-rasa Oh no I hope your cat will survive this! You really should not microwave this. For the corn part, if you collect 10 corn you can shoot a grenade with e. This comes in handy when being at higher waves, but watch out to leave some corn to plant... Definitely going to check out yours then

desertmaw 2020-04-22 09:36

@marcusnystrand Glad you liked it

desertmaw 2020-04-22 09:38

@ponypen @marlo Thank you for the information, we will try updating this

Overall: Fun and addictive, and very well presented.

Fun: Fun and addictive. I played for quite a while. I had two goes, and both times, the game played beautifully for quite a while until suddenly crashing. (Playing in Firefox on Windows.) It took me a while to figure out how the planting/growing/special weapon system worked, and I never figured out how to get a grenade. I like the way the enemies gradually take away my room to move around. (Is this preventable? I certainly never managed to stop it.)

Innovation: Sure, it's pretty unusual.

Theme: Yes

Graphics: Very nice!

Audio: I like it - both the music and the SFX!

Humor: Well, I laughed a bit at the juxtaposition of the calm in-between-waves music and what I was actually doing - roaming the forest drinking human blood.

Mood: Good, the graphics and music and SFX all work together nicely, in my opinion.

desertmawtobi 2020-04-22 10:50

@reheated thank you for your detailed feedback. Unfortunately we couldnt finish the grenades visually. They cost 10 corn and do damage to the humans but are not visible... About the crash: Maybe there were to many humans spawned or some other issue, we will try to fix this.

desertmawtobi 2020-04-26 12:17

we have now fixed the bugs mentioned by @ponypen, @curtis-pelissier and @marlo and added a little more explanation in the controls at the ground. Also the grenades work now. Try to kill the big bosses in the last wave and save the trees!

Nice game! I like the smooth gameplay, art style, and it was nice to see the control instructions in the level, it made it much easier to understand how the game is played. Cool game and nice work!

Interesting, challenging game. I included it in my Ludum Dare 46 compilation video series, if you want to take a look. :) https://youtu.be/HbpVWKRHlfc

desertmaw 2020-05-06 15:27

@jupiter-hadley Thanks for playing and reviewing it in your video :)

Amazing game! It's pretty difficult to survive, especially on later waves, but it's very satisfying.

The game is well done. The graphics are nice and clean, everything is visually distinct, making it instantly recognizable for what it is. The sounds and music are nice. That track playing in the background is very fitting for a hectic arena fight. ;)

I love that this game has so many features. Multiple enemy types and variations, several attacks, ugprades... This game has everything. Even a sort of day/night cycle, though I wish there was more happening during the night than just making everything harder to see. Maybe special enemy that appears only when it's dark?

As for the few issues I had: - I think the camera is a bit too close to the character. It makes the whole experience a little bit too hectic. - The game could give more information to the player. When using sprint or special attack when it's not ready, there could be a beeping sound informing the player they can't use that action yet. The sprint could use a recharge bar, too. - A bit more instructions would be nice. For example, you need 80 (or is it 100?) blood to use your special attack, but it's not explained anywhere in the game. - Sometimes the triggers on blood cubes didn't fire when I got close to them, so I could use my character to push them around instead of collecting them. Moving out of their range and back again seemed to fix it. - The corn planting mechanic doesn't seem to do that much now, I'd either ditch it and make the corns fall out of enemies, or expand it.

Overall, it's a very well done jam entry, I had a lot of fun playing it. Good job! ;)
