Absolutely lovely game. I could see myself with the people, listening to their stories and sharing my own. This is the first jam game that has made me cry, it's such a charming game! Would love to play more, small snippets of people's lives.

geckoo1337 2019-04-30 17:32

Really well done. I love games based on text adventure. I would like to say that you are a real writter having skill and understanding to write a good story. The main mechanic reminds me some old games during my youth. Good use of the UI canvas under Unity. I am really impressed by your project. I suggest to add an oppresive background music. Thank you. I wish you the best ++

Oh man, glad I finally found this! Really sweet story, and the method of telling is pretty cool---that's a lot of dialogue you've crafted in such a short amount of time!

Unfortunately though, it seems I encountered a bug right at the very end:

I get to this point with the Hermit and I can't get any more text to appear

I did really enjoy the lead up to it though, so many characters and all rather well set with their own motivations. And of course, from a technical perspective, using Unity for a text adventure is pretty novel in itself, haha.

joshyoshkenoshi 2019-05-08 14:31

@tammukka @geckoo1337 - thank you both so much for your lovely comments!

@jjjjason - thank you for bringing this problem to my attention, and I apologise for it undoubtedly ruining your play experience. I'm a little late properly testing this game as I've been taking part in #ue4jam for the past 5 days. Not entirely sure what's going on there, but I'll have a look into it.

zondarg 2019-05-08 22:00

Yay, one of the (too) few IF entries this time, I was actively looking for them. Awsome game, reminded me of some old Infocom adventures (but choice based), clever concept with the sharing of memories. Played through, but only got about half of the 700 maximum, thats probably because I did not try all combinations of stories on everyone? Very well done!

marc-grabow 2019-05-11 13:08

Wow, amazing text adventure, well written and it sucks you into the world. Very sad at times, I think this is the first emotional game I played for this LD. I assume you are a writer? Anyways, well done, loved it!

whynotyt 2019-05-11 13:13

Nice i really got invested into the game...

joror 2019-05-11 13:39

Very nicely written! I love the emotion you put in every story - very human. I felt like the stories were all building up to a dark ending - grief, loneliness, sickness, worries. Thought it was the afterlife and was reviewing my own life. :)

UI wise the structure is simple but effective. I would have the text for the longer parts not all appear at once though, but rather in paragraph pieces with 'click to continue'. (now I have to scroll up to find the 'start' of each bit)

pawciu 2019-05-11 22:04

Very well written

ildfuglen 2019-05-12 14:24

Really nicely written. I am not generally into text-games, but this one was interesting. I also encountered a bug towards the end where the game froze. "Draping you over his shoulder, he slowl" is the last text on the screen :(

joshyoshkenoshi 2019-05-13 10:48

@ildfuglen - thank you for your feedback, and for making me aware of the bug you experience. I'm sorry that your game groze; it sounds similar to the bug that @jjjjason experienced, but I haven't yet been able to work out what's causing it! It seems very strange for the game to break in the middle of a block of text...

joshyoshkenoshi 2019-05-13 11:36

@joror - I definitely agree with your suggestion of a 'Click to continue' to separate out the larger text blocks. This is something I'd have liked to implement, but sadly didn't have time to do. It's part of the reason I used text formatting, so you can tell where you need to start reading from. ;-)

joshyoshkenoshi 2019-05-13 12:10

@ildfuglen and @jjjjason, the bug is now fixed. You guys were playing so thoroughly that the text log became too long, which caused the freezing. It was just a coincidence that you were both on the same passage of text when this occurred. I thought I'd avoided this potential problem by using a TextMeshPro element, but apparently now!

jjjjason 2019-05-13 17:17

@joshyoshkenoshi Great to hear you figured it out! How did you manage to fix it, if you don’t mind?

joshyoshkenoshi 2019-05-13 19:14

@jjjjason The log is comprised of a list of string elements. I've made it so that the length of the list caps at 100, with the first element getting removed each time a new one is added. It means that the log isn't whole any more, but I figure that nobody will need to scroll that far back! It's really only a problem anyway if you're thorough with your exploration of the story, and seek all possible dialogue options. This fix also helps the game to remain responsive, as it otherwise started to lag as the log got longer and longer.

aurel 2019-05-14 16:11

WOW. That was really good.

I really enjoyed how it all came together, and the memories you picked up ended up helping/encouraging others, and the way it all tied together. The writing was excellent, if a little depressing at times, and I really enjoyed the overall ambience of the story.

jjjjason 2019-05-14 18:13

One rating away!!

tamail 2019-05-15 11:37

Nice game, I admire the writing which was very good!

lubaka 2019-05-15 20:03

That was incredible, i got 250/700 which i feel like its very bad, but i really enjoyed the game! I am still amazed how you managed to write a response for every memory for each character, must have been hell!

As a fan of these types of games, i must say that this was nothing less than an amazing experience!

joshyoshkenoshi 2019-05-15 22:59

@lubaka - Yes, it was rather difficult keeping track of all of the dialogue. I ended up compiling a lengthy text document. Don't worry about your score - it's only a guideline for efficiency of play; you clearly explored a lot of the dialogue options, which is great to hear!

cristihkj 2019-05-16 15:43

The game is nice and has potential! Good job! :)

jimbly 2019-05-17 03:18

Typos: * which **extent** upwards -> **extend** * be **brace** enough -> **brave**

My score: 395/700. That was neat. I'm not one for narrative games, but since my entry was all text this compo, I thought I should give this one a try ;). Impressive how much content there is, and it was pretty well written, good job!

joshyoshkenoshi 2019-05-17 08:21

Thanks, @jimbly - the only problem with using a spell checker is that it doesn't catch instances where you've used the wrong word, rather than misspelled a word!

jaywoody 2019-05-18 15:18

Wow! This was a very nice text based game and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I'm not good at picking up books and plowing through them, so playing this game was initially somewhat daunting to me. After I got over the slow pace and got into the groove I found myself really enjoying figuring out what memory would give the right experience to what character. The text and the verbiage seemed very professional but at the same time was easy to digest even for a non-native speaker like me. Only very minor gripe I have was the same that someone already pointed out here, that you had to scroll up for the start of the response in some cases. Other than that I think it was a good execution technically.

Also very nice job incorporating the theme in a very clever way! After a playthrough I got 600/700 points in the end.

I have a hard time finding any faults in this, other than now I'm itching to play or read what happens after the end, so you got me hooked! Let me know if you write what happens next. :)

Very nice work! I never knew I like text-based games this much!

joshyoshkenoshi 2019-05-18 15:34

@jaywoody - thank you for giving it a go, despite your reservations. To be honest, I'm not sure whether I myself would choose to play a game like this (without knowing quite a bit about it first).

I'm tempted to have a go at turning it into a mini-RPG by building the scene and letting you control the character and walk around and speak to the people, keeping the text but displaying it in a smaller log at the bottom of the screen (Baldur's Gate style). That's the sort of game that would appeal to me more, even though the gameplay itself would be virtually identical.

lesinvisible 2019-05-19 11:29

Interesting to know that text-based adventures are still living here. To me it was a bit of confusing game but I appreciated narrative-based approach. To me something like this is much better than this LD's overwhelming swarm of clickers, side-scrollers and other pedestrian efforts.

kristinamay 2019-05-19 14:41

This was really wonderful, and I'm glad to see someone else doing text-based games. :) I'm really curious to know more about how you used Unity to create this - do you have any resources you could share?

joshyoshkenoshi 2019-05-19 20:06

Thanks, @kristinamay.

I don't have any particular resources to share with you per se, although I did start out watching a series of videos for a Unity live training course linked below. However, I didn't watch them all the way through because what they were doing didn't quite match up with what I was doing, meaning that they were only of limited use to me. Something important that I did take from that course, though, was the use of scriptable objects for various aspects of my game. I use scriptable objects for the characters, the memories, and the action words (verbs) that underlie each action.

For any more information, I'd suggest just having a look through the game assets (if you have the time and will!) It's a little bit messy, since I built it all from scratch, but it should give you a general idea of how things connect. Any other questions, just give me a shout here, on Twitter, or wherever you like!

Edit: okay, so I wasn't expecting it to embed the video - that's kinda cool!

cheesepencil 2019-05-21 01:00

I wasn't expecting it to hold my interest to the end but it did, so well done. Very cool story!

pablotitan 2019-05-21 11:07

I don't like text games, but I gave this one a chance. And yes, the story is really interesting as other say too. Anyway, I really would like at least some graphics or statistics somewhere in UI, so it could feel like a game. But as an interactive story it's really a great one ;)
