You're link doesn't work! You need to input this link instead: https://simplegames-1.itch.io/tiny-square
For some reason there were two black squares on the screen which made the game impossible to navigate. The graphics were cute, though!
Woops, I think your link is broken
I am also getting the two black squares on the screen. Graphics and sound effects are indeed cute, haha
Your link is broken 😨
I cant see anything! Screenshot (15).png
@myfriendtames Fixed the problem! Please try again.
@somewhatinfinite Fixed the problems! Try playing again!

The game art is really cute, but I didn't get what, where or how I have to do. I also got stuck outside the map several times...
I think your art is beautiful :v: , however, I didn't understand what I had to do in the game, I moved around the map and did some things, but nothing...
Edited this comment because it seems the black bars are intended :-) I just rated the graphics, which are quite good! I did not rate the other categories because: When creating a game in unity, always apply Time.deltatime to the inputs (and adjust the speed values accordingly). That way you get the same speed on every computer. I'm running a 144hz monitor, so the game got really fast to the point where I could not control anything anymore.
@tomdeal Thanks for telling me! If I remember correctly I added a rigid body component with a velocity on key press and thought that it already has it implemented for some weird reason.
I won!
I liked the graphics, they have nice character to them. The sound effects are also nice and solid. A lot of games go too slow, but not this one! You really zoom around, and there were some fun moments there.
But it fouled me up a bunch of times the way I would go off the screen. Walking from one screen to the next, there was a dead zone I had to move through, where I could not see myself. Some of these dead zones seemed to have obstacles in them, and several times I got stuck. I could also jump something like 1.3 screens high when I had the item for hi jump, and lost sight of myself a few times that way. This was just a bit awkward, and not usually a gamekiller, but I did end up having to restart the game 3-4 times because I got stuck. The main place I got stuck was going down one screen and then left. I don't know what's on the edge of that screen, I may have popped up to the screen above and got stuck somewhere... the camera didn't follow me, so I was offscren and unable to get back.
The hi-speed movement and insta-death spiked with total restart was a tough combo, but I kind of liked it in a way. With the game being so short, it was sort of okay to send me all the way back! If the game were longer, I would advise keeping the item you died with, because I had to go to get hijump maybe ten times.
I hope the offscreen stuff wasn't just a matter of my computer being a weird setup. I do have an odd resolution, but I also tried playing in windowed mode, and that was not any different.
So snappy fun movement and nice look and sound, that's a solid entry!
The graphics were really cute! I didn't know exactly what to do but I collected a few things :) Keep it up!
Had trouble figuring out where to go or what to do. Collected a few power ups, though. Could probably be improved by not letting the player go behind the black borders of the screen since it was frustrating trying to jump over blocks I couldn't see.
Nice graphics. The sacrifice is the missing screen parts I guess? Didn´t get very far :-/
Nice game. Some quick tips for 2D in Unity: 1. If you're using tilemaps then also add a Composite Collider 2D to it - it'll fix getting stuck on the ground. 2. If you're not then try putting a circle or capsule collider on the player. 3. Put a physics material 2D on youre player, with no friction or bounciness (both set to 0).
@alex-davies Thank you very much! The information would be very helpful in future projects!
I was trying my hardest to play this but what's with the black bars on each side of the screen? they cover a lot of visibility not to mention traps that can you all the way to the beginning. Tried going down the hole at the start and tried moving around next screen but I didn't seem to trigger any ways to proceed.
I like the concept of the game, the art is quite cute. :) One thing though, is between some sections, you have to walk off-screen longer before it switches. I would suggest switching the section immediately after you walk off-screen. I'm liking what I'm seeing though.
I think maybe the physics are not being scaled by the framerate or something? The sensitivity and speed is so extreme its kind of unplayable for me on my machine, unfortunately :(
Not sure what was happening the screen was all screwy.
@josh-bothun play the updated version of the game
The game was unplayable and i kept getting out of the screen and didnt really find the purpose of it but the graphics were quite good.
I won, I like your art style. Maybe you can make the screen bigger and then player will know what to do.
Interesting game! I included it in my compilation video series of games from the Ludum Dare, if you’d like to take a look :) https://youtu.be/cFpZDUQu-Js
It looks good, it sounds good, but it doesn't feel really good to play (and that's a shame because it could have felt great).
- Jumping is really inconsistent. There is a short hop and a full hop mechanic going on (I don't know if it's intended), but it's kind of random (it doesn't seem to relate to how long I press the button). - I understand what you went for regarding the theme, but I feel like it's a bit weak. - For some reasons it's sometimes hard to go from one map to another.
I would focus on making things consistent and smooth, even if it means keeping things really simple, next time.
I won! but i dont know what i did -- perhaps some more explanation at the beginning -- the controls just seemed off because sometimes i jump short and then another time it was off the charts -- thanks for making the game
cute graphics, but the gameplay is kinda weird, i couldn't understand what to do
