Really cool idea, a little disorienting to play but I think that this project shows how hard and weird making a First-Person 2D platformer is. Good work!

Hey there! Nice job submitting. One thing I would suggest is to disable the first person controller for about 3 seconds after starting the game. This will prevent disorientation when first starting out and people moving the mouse around. I felt like this was sonic the hedgehog FPS i just wish there were loops to spin around on.

It's good. It reminds me of https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KBb9wFP7uZM

It could use some shading to help with depth perception, and there is one jump in the first level after defeating two hedgehogs that is nearly impossible to make.

Is the camera supposed to constantly pan very slowly to the left? The game is an interesting concept but it gave me _bad_ sea sickness instantly. "Realistically" a 2D FPS game would only see things in 1 dimension (like Flatland). It would be cool if a game could be made around that.

juutis 2018-04-26 20:06

Thanks for the feedback guys!

@tsjost Sorry to hear about your sea sickness. You think it's the FOV? Or maybe the missing crosshair/cursor? I've heard people getting sea sick due to both.

No, the camera is not supposed to constantly pan. Must be some kind of random weirdness. :) And yeah, I agree that a true 2D FPS would be nothing like this game, but if the camera truly was in the in the same plane with a 2D world then there wouldn't be much to see. :)

To be honest, my first idea was to make a game with the idea of "just another day as a full-time 2D game protagonist" where you're kinda like a movie star, running around in this three-dimensional set with a camera crew filming on one side and some billboards used as a backdrop on the other side (but your movement would still be locked to two dimensions). Obviously that was waayyy too ambitious for a 48h jam. :)

I had a lot of trouble getting over the wide gap right after the two mobs at the beginning. Besides that and the lack of music it was pretty fun, I loved the player and mob death feedback!

I didn't finished all the levels, i think i stop at around 4 or 5. Anyway cool little game. The art is simple but works really well. The thing that i like the most is probably the level design, so good work!

I had so much fun playing this game, probably more than most 2D platformers. Only thing one could ask for would be a little more love to the graphics, I guess. (the background parallax was hilarious though. honestly wasn't expecting that :D )

Plays very well, solid controls

Fun concept. There seemed to be a bug with collisions where when I hit a platform from the side while moving upward and it would stop all vertical movement like I hit a ceiling. I would also like to see more enemy types or perhaps some use of the 3d space that wouldnt normally be in a platformer like hidden passages behind stuff. Good job!

jshaffer94247 2018-04-29 05:21

Cool concept! I got stuck between two platforms too tall to jump onto and couldn't figure out what to do. :( I had passed through one door but that's all I remember. Anyway, I think this is a really interesting idea. I like the way you built the background layers so that when the Hedgie jumps you can see between them.

Great combination of genres! Had a lot of fun playing this, it works really well and the changed perspective is a true eye-opener. The visuals and sounds are nice, some music would've been great. Unfortunately I got a little frustrated in the level where you have to climb up ladders while avoiding shots, it was kinda hard for me to get the timing right and especially to predict the height of the bullets, so I died over and over and gave up... Nevertheless I enjoyed this a lot, great job!

Heya,

as others said before. It is a really cool concept! I felt a little bit like Mario :D I liked the graphics. Overall a really good and solid game!

laguna 2018-04-29 12:01

Quite a good game. I like the idea of putting 2d gameplay to a 3d world!

baby-dino-herd 2018-04-29 16:41

Really cute and clever take on the theme! I had loaded the game without reading the description, so for the first few seconds I was very confused until I caught on to what was happening. My only other comment would be to agree with @infinitycore that adding any additional cues to help depth perceptual would be quite helpful, as it's already very easy to get disoriented with this viewpoint.
