Spent 20 minutes playiny it great game

hackingroelz 2017-04-24 08:41

@warbzz Thanks!

Marvelous work here. I love how the environment turns what would otherwise have been a very simple game into a deep tactical and spatial challenge. The soundscape was well done and the visual environment did exactly what it needed to. The health pickups might have looked better if they stayed solid longer and then faded more quickly. Perhaps surprisingly, driving backwards led to a dramatic improvement in my scores. I found that being able to watch my enemies and return fire was more important than watching in front of me. Trying to navigate to the next health pickup without getting caught in a crossfire is a challenge. Highscore: 22.

chauchau 2017-05-12 14:01

At first I was like, oh another shooter on a planet, but the bullets going around the planet make it so much more interesting. It becomes a beautiful bullet hell planet!

vodzik 2017-05-13 12:13

Highscore: 83 (with going backward) :P

Nice and fast game :)

hackingroelz 2017-05-14 12:45

Thanks @piscythe, @chauchau and @vodzik!

damien-remars 2017-05-14 18:32

The only way I found to survive enough to kill some enemies. Doing so, I only could rotate one way. The controls make the game too difficult to play. Though, the shooting on a small 3d world is a nice idea!

nightshadow0 2017-05-14 22:37

Man, this starts at 11 and does not let up, i could barely make it a few seconds. It's fun, but the controls and the endless onslaught of bullets feel really unforgiving. I like how the bullets go around the planet though, that was a nice touch. Nice work!

kcreanor 2017-05-16 07:14

Ha!! This is intense!!! Really great, think it could maybe start off a little easier but that's just me being rubbish and wanting to play more! Simple and fun, the controls are solid and the game is all round a pleasure to play, thanks! Well done

thatsnillet 2017-05-16 10:31

Interesing idea. The planet gives the game a lot more depth that it would have otherwise. The planet is a bit to barren, and it maybe could have started of a bit easier. But it's great for quick playthroughs. An overall cool experience! (Please check out my game if you have time, i need a few more votes)

cliffracerx 2017-05-16 19:03

Wasn't able to last more than ~15 seconds, but it's certainly a neat idea.

Assuming the bullets are intended to be lasers, them curving 'round the planet from gravity makes absolutely no sense, but...meh, science.

The controls definitely need some tuning, and the difficulty needs to be turned down a notch, but with some powerups and or alternative weapons, it could work.

dragojt 2017-05-16 21:03

Wow, everything happened so fast hahah. I can't make more than 6 of score, so difficult. The game is so nice, with arcade style but I think it can improve balancing the flow of the enemies. The music is so nice for this, did you make it by yourself?

So, good good job :)

monty 2017-05-16 22:01

Very nice game - but man, it's brutal! =) Solid and very well made - congratulations!

garethiw 2017-05-17 15:17

This has more of a difficulty cliff than a ramp, but it was really pretty to see all the patterns the bullets make before dying :D

I managed to survive a bit longer by simply trying to go full speed and steer towards the health, but then aiming took a backseat and the world quickly filled up.

Neat little game though, especially as a compo entry.

cameron2134 2017-05-17 18:09

Quite an engrossing game, played for quite a while seeing how long I could last against the onslaught of bullets, which was never that long...I hope you continue this game, I feel it just needs some balancing tweaks with the amount of bullets etc since death seems to be instantaneous sometines :P

nergle 2017-05-17 19:22

I really like that each shot goes across the planet it makes cool patterns and adds an interesting level of strategy to it.

danbolt 2017-05-17 19:28

Whoa, cool game! Having the bullets spin around the world like that was really cool. The small asset size also made a good fit for Unity WebGL, which tends to be crazy bloated.

At first, I died a lot trying to run forward while shooting and finding health pickups, but I'd often get pushed into an onslaught of bullets and never lasted long. Eventually I stumbled into running backwards while holding the spacebar and angling the stream of my shots, and a got a score closer to 40, which made me feel a little proud.

japes 2017-05-17 19:45

Very similar to this game https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/38/polar-conflict and I love it for the same reasons, interesting spin on a classic genre. Well made, everything works, the sounds/graphics are simple but get the message across. well done :)

mashas 2017-05-17 19:50

Man! This is as hard as it is good looking! My laptop keyboard sometimes didn't let me move, spin and shoot at the same time = insta dead. My highest score was from just spinning while moving backwards. Very challenging but also addictive in a Flappy Bird kind of way. Gnngh!! GG

hackingroelz 2017-05-18 17:41

Thank you all for playing and rating my game!

@dragojt Moving backwards is generally the way to go as others have said, that should make things a bit easier (of course, there's some balance tweaks that could be made though). Also, I made the music using the Figure app for iOS (it's quite nice if you're terrible at making music like me).

@cameron2134 Yeah, I spent a lot of time tweaking it at the end, but I still wasn't quite satisfied. I personally do like the fact that a small screw-up can mean instantaneous death, but I can see how that might be frustrating.

@danbolt If you're under the impression that I used Unity WebGL, I actually used Haxe with the Kha multimedia framework.

hunttis 2017-05-18 18:38

This was a very smooth experience (if really really difficult). Controls feel responsive, even though I ended just reversing most of the time :D Graphics were really doing what they needed to do as well, no need to go high poly to make it intensive :)

I made my game in haxe as well, first time LD with haxe, so it was nice to see someone else used it too :D It's pretty great and your game shows it can do 3D too. I had some issues getting the html5 build to stay stable (some weird tweening issue).

Have you used haxe for long?

hackingroelz 2017-05-18 19:20

@hunttis I only started very recently with Haxe actually. I used to use Java with LWJGL, but I've switched to Haxe and Kha now and I'm quite liking it. Also, since Kha wraps around OpenGL/WebGL/DirectX/Metal/OpenGL ES/..., it's pretty capable of doing some complex 3D graphics (and multi-platform). For example: http://armory3d.org/.

Fun game! I included it in my Ludum Dare 38 compilation video series, if you’d like to take a look :) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IwLATN0OA3Y
