Interesting concept, but not too sure how this fits the theme. For some reason my sound doesn't work in this game, I would look into that. Otherwise, not a bad game, cool concept...

d-studios 2017-05-05 04:13

@Scornz, thank you for the reply. Answers to some of your questions: *This fits the theme because the world you are in a "small world". I got inspired from Minecraft a little bit when I saw the "Generating World" loading bar. Therefore, this kind of indirectly fits with the theme. *Also, when you say the sound doesn't work, do you mean it won't play at all on your computer? Note that I hastily made the music and didn't have time to properly clean it(I am a total noob at creating music).

Thanks for playing!

This is your first time doing the Ludum Dare? if it is great work on the game. I have to say, it is a interesting concept. It is just that i don't find the controls that intuitive, to look up and down it is 'w' and 's' (why not just use the mouse to look around). When your making the game make sure you leave yourself enough time after you finish the basic game play mechanic. This is so that you can fix up any bugs and 'polish' the game. For example, a simple bug was that you can fall of the stage in the game, that is as simple as adding a barrier to stop players

Here's a good video to watch about game jams and how to polish a game. Hopefully it has some useful tips for you. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2xfxx27HbM4

Anyways, great work on the game and congratulations!

Solid work. I'll discuss the small issues I experienced first:

- I think the controls are a little unintuitive. Perhaps mouse camera control would have made it more satisfying. - It was a little strange that I could look up and down, but I couldn't look left or right. I think maybe using A and D to look left and right would give the player more control. -This was probably just on my end, but I had some pretty significant performance issues, with respect to framerate and lagging. Again, this might just be my computer's fault.

What I liked a lot: - The music was cool. It cut in and out now and then, probably due to my computer's poor performance, but I think it fit the aesthetic of the game. - The art was simple but consistent. It was interesting to look at. Sort of surrealist, idk but I liked it. - I really like that you can toggle gravity. It made it a lot more fun to fly around and destroy blocks.

Nice job. Another commenter mentioned that this was your first Ludum Dare. If that's the case, great work and welcome!

@tyranosaw and @abhimok This is actually my second time doing Ludum Dare. I did my first Ludum Dare in my old account in the old Ludum Dare webpage and decided to create a new account here.

@abhimok P.S. Note that this game has lagging issues and the music cuts in and out because I am bad at recording music. The type of computer you have is not responsible for these issues!

@tyranosaw Thanks for the links by the way!

My previous account: http://ludumdare.com/compo/author/snapdragon/

I made my first game with Stencyl and this game with Unity.

Hey - didn't get it but a good attempt with potential keep at it!

rixud 2017-05-07 05:11

this was my second ludum dare too! nice job! some friendly tips from a beginner game developer: despite the fact that the controls are not intuitive the lack of control over the horizontal view make hard to explore your small world, the game need some walls for prevent the player fall, I would put a maximum and minimum of rotation in the camera to avoid that the player can give 360 in the view and put the camera a little behind the player collider avoiding lokking inside the blocks. i like the fact that you get time to add some music to your game, i didn't get time to do it in mine...

This was just some tips for improvement your little game! I know it's difficult to make a game in a weekend! Like I said this was my second ludum dare too! NICE JOB and keep improvement! I look forward to seeing the improved version of this game and your next ludum dare entry!

I think I accidentally backed out off the world and ended up below it, with plenty of blocks to destroy. Like the others before me, the controls were a little difficult. A 3D environment with only keyboard controls feels pretty old school, but I craved the use of my mouse.

The art was all blocks, so it's hard to really judge. Plenty of contrast between the dark grey and green blocks, and the music made it all feel weird and surreal.

maartene 2017-05-08 03:37

The controls are the main issue of this game I guess. If they were a little more intuitive then the game would be much better. And a little pizzaz would go a long way:

1. some explosion/effect when you destroy a block (explosions are cool!) 2. some physics when you destroy a block so blocks on top of it would fall down?

My suggestion would be to spend some more time tweaking this game, its controls and the core gameplay loop some more until it feels really good.

Keep at it and see you next LD!

It's always hard to judge games in a competition like this one. Great job at the attempt and I can see that you have some potential if you keep at it. You already mentioned the thing about the music, but the thing I want to focus on is the them and the fun aspect. It could be a lot of fun though it's a little weird not being able to turn. It also seems to be mimicking Minecraft a bit with the gravity, etc, which inherently makes the world feel bigger. Anyway, great first run at it, hope to see you to more LDJams!

kleinzach 2017-05-08 04:51

The controls were very non-standard, and I still am not sure if you can rotate left and right. I appreciate the sound effects and music you added in, they are so important, but its easy to simply forget about them or put them off until its too late.

blaster391 2017-05-08 20:14

I've found that if you are having performance/stability issues with unity, it is often much better as actual Window/Mac/Linux builds rather than webGL, which is always a little unstable.

The nonstandard controls were a bit weird... And the inability to turn was awkward, but it's nice that you had touches like the highscore and stuff, made me want to do extra runs after I lost the first time.

peachtreeoath 2017-05-09 04:09

Curious to see what other ideas you had in mind with a bit more experience under your belt. Like others, I didn't mind the art being simple, it has its place with certain themes.

veralos 2017-05-11 06:15

It's basic but functional, and there's some enjoyment in trying to beat your high score. The simple graphics are okay and the music is decent. The ability to turn gravity off is interesting but seemed kind of tricky to use. There are a few things that drag it down, though: * The game is really laggy. I don't know how you would fix this, but it makes the game a lot less enjoyable. * The controls are somewhat unintuitive, and it feels odd not being able to turn. I think it would work better with WASD to move, mouse to aim, and Left Click to break blocks. * The concept seems fairly dull and is barely related to the theme. I would have liked some more flavour even if the gameplay was just as simple. Perhaps the blocks could be bad guys you need to stop, or maybe you're a cleaner who needs to get rid of some debris. I don't know, just something to make the game feel like more than just cubes.

philomory 2017-05-12 19:59

Unfortunately, as others have commented, the lag makes the game very difficult to play. The controls also seem a bit weird, mostly in that I occasionally sank into the floor. Despite all of that, it's a promising start, and I hope you come back for future LDs.

EDIT: Also, even though there were some problems with the playback, I like that you actually recorded real audio for the music. I've never done anything other than procedurally-generated music, so kudos to you for making it yourself.

lars-dk 2017-05-12 23:33

Not too bad at all. Had fun toying with this for a while.

Things I liked: 1. Fun concept 2. Good interpretation of the theme 3. Bright atmosphere

Things to work on: 1. No reason why performance should have been this poor. Loading was also surprisingly slow. 2. Controls were a little difficult to use, especially for navigation. 3. Relatively simply graphics and sound - even for this style, some minor details could have added a lot, like particles.

masterkrepta 2017-05-13 03:16

While the gameplay itself was good. I feel the controls were very counter intuitive. I had to restart several times do to rolling backwards off the map when i meant to simply look down. It would be much simpler to use twin stick shooter style controls.

clickmation 2017-05-13 03:57

Three things that I think would make this game better.

1. Less lag, like everyone's talking about.

2. Better controls. I didn't quite understand why there weren't any controls to look sideways. A simple 'A' and 'D' to look around or the classic mouse control would have been nice.

3. Some danger features to make the game more intense. Maybe monsters, or a higher point block that is positioned in a hard to get place so that it's a risk for more points. However, if the calm peaceful mood is what you are aiming for, this suggestion wouldn't quite fit in.
