I always forget to give credits:
Music: Tune Smithy 3
Sound Effects: Audacity
Graphics: My Paint, Photoshop

That was neat, and I think I won, but is there a better ending?

susanthecat 2011-08-21 22:36

Thanks for playing! Only one good ending. Bad endings: Drowning, Asphyxiating, Imploding

taslemguy 2011-08-22 22:32

I think you did a good job with this. The graphics were really good, and the mood and tone were very well-executed, but I felt like I was a rat in a maze. It was a bit disorienting to move around the facility. Clicking on the map would be a lot easier.

hamster_mk_4 2011-08-23 00:10

It felt like an old sierra game where I couldn't figure out the correct solution without dieing a bunch. When I finally got the correct answer I felt like I was climbing over the corpses of my previous attempts.

whiletruefork 2011-08-23 02:48

Interesting but it was hard mentally mapping the locations to the map without any directional cues

susanthecat 2011-08-23 13:06

Thanks for the input. I think you're right -- clicking on the map would have been better.

Version 1.1 :)

I haven't played a ton of visual novels (although I like interactive fiction, a la Inform/Zork/etc.) but this was fun. The art had a nice hand-drawn look and I enjoyed wandering around the zones wondering where I was and what had happened. Figured out how to escape after a few tries.

It would have been nice to have a few more zones, and maybe for things to be a little bit less symmetrical. I am still curious who "the woman" was. It might be interesting to have the Raccoon be able to read some things for instance. Some of the audio was much louder/harsher than the music, so maybe it could be normalized a little bit?

Overall, definitely enjoyable!

Thanks for the comments.

I originally was going to have the lab be bigger, but then common sense took over and told me to make it something smaller that I could actually draw all the backgrounds for and not have to worry about all my maps links. :)

Currently all the rooms are hand coded. But I think making a "level editor" for renpy could be doable.

Sorry for double comment!

I was thinking of having video surveillance that the raccoon could access so that the player would get more background as to what happened.

Idea of character switching was nice, but I agree with both problematic orientation (although on third try I understood how it works) and with "walking on corpses of my previous characters" (c) hamster_mk_4. Too bad there's not more (I checked sources:), at least some background info of what happened would be nice. Presentation, both audio and gfx was nice. (Could use some nice ending images, at least for good one)

Great game. Good graphic and audio cues too. Like everyone else, I also had to die many times before winning since effects were only clear once it was too late. I didn't find navigating too annoying though.

cosmologicon 2011-08-27 17:51

Wow, great job getting all those graphics together! I think I liked your timelapse best of all, because of the heavy graphical content. I would have liked fewer clicks. I think there was very little reason for the hallways to be there, unless I missed something.

PS: sorry I made a semi-3D platforming game! :)

tcstyle 2011-08-27 19:50

That's a neat puzzle.
I know, time constraints, but the drawn scenery could have needed a lot more details to have something for the eye to catch.

rudy 2011-08-28 11:17

Awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww it's a kitty! Nice atmosphere, nice art, nice music/sound. A little tedious, but it's a "text adventure", so I shouldn't complain.

Shadow 2011-08-28 21:05

Adorable. Really liked the art and characters. Liked the game a lot. Good Job.

jedi 2011-08-31 01:49

I like it. It's innovative and the story / puzzle is very creative. Good job with the music!

*SPOILER!*
It would've been slightly more cathartic to be reunited with the woman at the end and have her let you choose your final form.

I share others' opinion of the navigation being weird at first. Also, when I was given the first two choices, I felt that the menu scheme was unintuitive. I expected the brighter text to be what I selected. Once you're given three choices, it's more obvious which one is highlighted.

susanthecat 2011-08-31 14:44

*SPOILER!*
There's an idea for a ending graphic. The woman frolicking with the shark. :)

Shadow 2011-09-01 12:19

Oh, btw, I think you may improve a little the experience by giving the character a special trait, like a distinguishable color, an accessory (e.g: a scarf, a ribbon, ...). Although you know they are the same 'character', it sometimes feel like they were different creatures. Now if that's what's intended then don't mind my comment, lol.

Now.... the woman and the shark? man, I knew it from the start...

tulrath 2011-09-05 01:27

That was fun, good implementation of the puzzles - I liked how the game kept you updated with timed events like the water rising. Good artwork, like the music too.

Really nicely done!

summaky 2011-09-05 18:58

I escaped! I had fun with this. I liked a lot the visual style and the music was very fitting as were the sound effects. Well done.

susanthecat 2011-09-05 22:58

Thank you all for the great comments! It is tricky trying to balance a puzzle that is challenging but not impossible.
