LD42 — Running out of space

Writespace by blinry 2018-08-14T16:19:27Z

Good game you nailed the whole typewriter aesthetic in my opinion and it was a cool use of mechanics. My main suggestion would be it wasn't as relevant to the theme as I would like I see what you were going for but it always felt like there was plenty of space to the point I wasn't running out maybe shrink the levels so its always a tight fit when it comes to spacing your words and at the end of the level little blank space is left. Overall though I loved the game well done on a fantastic job.

MNTL BLCKS by Steve Sparkes 2018-08-15T14:13:28Z

The graphics used for the alien and the humans were very nice I though however I sometimes had trouble reading the names of the modules when I was playing but that never hindered my experience to any noticeable degree. You really did your best to make a funny game and it really shows so well done on that front although using Tesco as the supermarket may not appeal to many not British people as its not something they'll know too well. Overall it was a great game next time I hope you have the time for audio as that would've made the game many times better.

MNTL BLCKS by Steve Sparkes 2018-08-15T17:58:51Z

@carraka yeah I guess you're right on that front and maybe instead of writing have an image of the UK as the alien lands?

MNTL BLCKS by Steve Sparkes 2018-08-15T22:08:48Z

@steve-sparkes Thank you I'm glad I could be of some help. I hope to see you guys in December

Dark Colosseum by BinarySpark 2018-08-14T20:46:25Z

First off the itch.io page you linked to had the set your own price payment option whereas (and I'm not sure if this is a rule or not) it should probably be set to just straight up free. Secondly on a more positive not I did find the game to be pretty good I liked the aesthetic and the music was good at getting me pumped up however it did kinda fall flat in regards to the controls not being as responsive as I would have liked as I kept falling into the pits I had created. Thirdly since I kept falling into holes I got a good look at the AI and it was very good almost like a 4-way online match if 1 of the players (me) was completely inept. Overall I liked the game you had an options menu which many people I have seen forgot to include my only problems was the unresponsiveness of the controls and the lack of a pause screen other than that great game.

Dark Colosseum by BinarySpark 2018-08-14T21:41:29Z

@binaryspark Hey no worries about it just trying to help. Also with the controls it wasn't that I didn't know it was I felt like the jump action didn't occur quickly enough when I pressed on the spacebar however I do have quite a cheap keyboard so that may be the reason sorry for any confusion I created.

Dark Colosseum by BinarySpark 2018-08-14T21:49:18Z

@cresceda @binaryspark Okay then my mistake sorry for the inconvenience my fault for using a £12 keyboard from amazon haha just ignore that section of my response please

Big Crunch by Dave Grey 2018-08-15T13:35:28Z

Graphics gave me a bit of a old arcade game vibe which I didn't mind but when it came to figuring out how the jetpack worked that took me a few tries maybe having the player start with it would've been nice however once I got past that it was a fun game and I think you did a great job for the 1 day you worked on it.

Trophy Hunter by dasun 2018-08-14T12:38:35Z

Great game with some great art, fluid movement and a very interesting take on the theme. I would like to submit a bug I believe I found that had sliver and bronze trophies being able to be removed from my weapon parts and put in storage basically making them pointless. Overall though great game with very few bug it felt great to play.

Trophy Hunter by dasun 2018-08-14T14:55:44Z

@dasun Yeah no problem mate I get that even 72hrs doesn't feel nearly long enough to bug test everything especially when you have lots of well made enemies and mechanics going on at once like you have done

Panic attack! At the party by Rammy294 2018-08-14T01:46:04Z

@xwilarg Thank you for the feedback I appreciate it greatly to address your points 1) I thought the speed of the character fit the mood of the game more but maybe that was just me. 2) I did find that in testing but adding more "enemies" to made them constantly bump into each other and thus not move which meant I left it with I believe 40 otherwise I would have had to make a much better AI (something I definitely need to work on). 3) And finally I agree that is quite useful for the player I thought it added a bit more to the anxious atmosphere which was something I really tried for in this. Thank you for taking your time to play rate and comment on my game I hope I can make a much better game come December and hopefully with your thoughts and other jammers I can make that hope a reality.

Panic attack! At the party by Rammy294 2018-08-14T12:02:42Z

@tontonpizza Thank for the comment when it comes to my coding skills I would say I am novice at best but I am always trying to improve so I would've liked to add extra features. I will check out that game it sounds rather good. Thank you again and I hope the jam goes well for you too.

Panic attack! At the party by Rammy294 2018-08-14T12:05:23Z

@frostbyte4k Thank you so much I did originally have it like that but when I had them all spawn by the door they ended up getting stuck to each other and therefore you could just stand on the far side and they would never reach you. I guess I could've done something where they spawn randomly in the area but like a previous project I'd likely not be able to make it so they wouldn't eventually spawn on top of the player.

Panic attack! At the party by Rammy294 2018-08-14T13:41:33Z

@max6333 I understand only slightly from personal experience I got a lot of inspiration for this game from my friends who suffer quite heavily from social anxiety but it does get better my friends are getting more and more confident and I'm sure you will too and that was my reasoning behind it because in anxious situations fast movement you feel as though it draws attention to yourself when in reality no one is paying attention

Panic attack! At the party by Rammy294 2018-08-14T17:35:18Z

@frostbyte4k I have heard about A* but my Computer science teacher didn't cover the curriculum too well so we didn't go through that but I will look into that good shout.

Panic attack! At the party by Rammy294 2018-08-15T15:33:10Z

@do-the-dog-avc Haha yeah with them changing directions the code is basically them moving a certain direction for a couple seconds then they randomise their directions it never occured to me how eerie that was until now. Yeah something I've heard a lot is about the AI which is incredibly simple so for next jam I will take these on board and focus more on that and as for the dash mechanic you mentioned perhaps since it would be awkward a small boost to your anxiety-o-meter for that dash so it fits better in the game? And yeah thing I'd like to change most is the whole RNG aspect of winning which I hope with some AI research on my part I can improve on. Thank you for taking your time to comment and play the game it is really appreciated.

Panic attack! At the party by Rammy294 2018-08-15T15:39:33Z

@doey Overall I would've loved to have more polish but I just had no time I went for the Jam category for the sole reason that it game me that extra 24hrs to make it working. The background music is a good shout I was planning on using Bosca Ceoil for the music but I'm using a new PC which I didn't realise had none of my old programs so in the rush and confusion I must have forgotten next time though I will try for some good tunes for the game. And finally I have mentioned this in previous comments but the reason I had a flat number of people was solely just the AI I was using really just clumped them by the entrance so last minute I changed it to just 40 partygoers. Thank you for playing and commenting on the game I really appreciate all the feedback hopefully when it comes to December I can really make some huge improvements.

Panic attack! At the party by Rammy294 2018-08-16T17:23:31Z

@gurkenlabs Thank you for the comments and for playing the game in the first place. I would've liked to add more music/visuals but with the limited time I had to make this and with coding being my area of "expertise" I thought I'd try to make a bug free and enjoyable game and if I had time upgrade the visuals and the sound however as it turned out my time was managed poorly and therefore this is what I was left with which I am still pretty proud of. The hiding in corners was a strategy many people have mentioned but I didn't look too into when testing but considering the setting of the game I thought it was a happy coincidence since when I am at a party I usually stay in the corner trying not to be noticed too much so it made me laugh a bit. Thank you again for playing and commenting on my entry I hope to enter again in December.

Panic attack! At the party by Rammy294 2018-08-29T15:33:08Z

@chadrbanks yeah sorry about that I have never tried a html version so wanted to keep the exporting it rather simple I'm sorry you didn't get a chance to play next time I'll be sure to add both.

Panic attack! At the party by Rammy294 2018-08-29T15:35:57Z

@optimans Thank you and those are some great ideas I even had the one about the friend helping bring down your metre or something along those lines but sadly due to time limits and plans made I couldn't get that done which I'm quite disappointed with but next time I hope I wont have any plans so I can dedicate more time and make it more feature rich.

Panic attack! At the party by Rammy294 2018-08-29T15:48:45Z

@smithy Thank you for the feedback I appreciate the honesty. The speed of the player was a deliberate design decision that I thought fit well with the mood of the game but as I now see I sacrificed a bit too much of the game play aspect for mood which wasn't the best decision. The goal was to have more and more people to spawn in but the AI all clumped together at the entrance and I didn't have the knowledge to fix it. Yeah fair point I am not an artist by any means and I felt the artwork (if you can even call it that) was passable especially for a game jam I hope over time I can improve or get someone else to do it in the future. AI has been a common complaint and I only used the random directions because I didn't know of any good ways to implement AI and it would've taken way too long to learn I've been shown some different methods that I will try to learn for next time though. Music was something I left to the end and when it came time to make it I had no idea what I was doing and definitely not enough time to do it so I will hopefully time manage myself better and learn what I'm doing with it. I never noticed the heartbeat being loud were you using headphones? I didn't test with headphone so that may be a big reason. Again with the timer I felt it made the situation more anxious not having it there but like with the player speed I see I put more weight on the mood than the game play which in retrospect isn't good when making a game. Thank you for you're feedback I greatly appreciate it hopefully I can take everything on board and make a better entry when the time comes in december.

Panic attack! At the party by Rammy294 2018-08-29T15:51:08Z

@rahim-pxr thank you I appreciate the praise I will try to play your entry when I have time to I am rather busy at the moment however.

Dataphobia by Shozou 2018-08-14T12:58:26Z

Fantastic game. Great visuals, funky music and some utterly unique mechanics. However the game felt off since I would have to restart each level multiple times to get the right combination of abilities maybe there could be multiple different ways to finish a level or as @bar0net suggested a map layout also the "flip" ability let me just say it took me a bit of frustration to realise that meant turning around but other than that great game can't wait until December to play more from you

Dataphobia by Shozou 2018-08-14T13:34:33Z

@shozou Yeah exactly and to make those levels in what was essentially 2 hour I have a ton of respect for that they are pretty great levels just a couple of suggestions for next time :)

Hell of space by framg 2018-08-14T17:57:02Z

The audio and visuals were very well done and the main mechanic was quite unique if at times a bit frustrating what with my games rarely having the correct monsters for the right feed and the fact that the rate at which the monsters spawn is very fast and doesn't leave a lot of room for errors. Overall it was a good game just wish it wasn't so hectic and frustrating at times.

Hell of space by framg 2018-08-14T20:48:37Z

No worries @toskokozlov I hope to see it there when the update is shipped until then you guys made a good game I hope the jam treats you well.

The Human Resources Manager by Humpert764 2018-08-14T23:00:22Z

Music was quite jolly which I guess makes sense considering the new world order and all I liked the premise and you executed it rather well however it did seem that whenever I upgraded a button it would get worse and worse I don't believe that would be intentional but I managed to beat the game by just spraying lv1 chemtrails on them so I can't complain I love the humour and overall the game was great pat yourselves on the back for this one.

The Human Resources Manager by Humpert764 2018-08-14T23:35:58Z

@humpert764 I would play it safe perhaps have on the itch.io site an updated version as well as the original jam version so that people can get the full experience of your game while also knowing how it look at submission.

No Space For Corpses by bigboyenzo 2018-08-13T23:14:59Z

Overall I found it to be a good game the music was nice and set the right tone I felt as well as the zombie noises being quite goofy which suited the game well and the graphics reminded me of old flash games which isn't bad but could stand to improve upon. However when it came to game play the weapon upgrade screen was very weird perhaps a UI would've been nicer to navigate and I felt the balance between the different weapons were a bit off I just stuck with the pistol. Overall it was a good game and I hope the reviews treat you well.

Save Me A Seat by chaitae 2018-08-14T12:17:18Z

First off as a fellow first time participant in Ludum Dare just... Wow this game has great visuals, cool mechanics and a great atmosphere well done the only thing I can fault you on is after failing the game it seemed that I was not able to interact with the people in seats and after trying to put popcorn on a seat while the people were moving kept them kinda stuck in the middle which was made worse by the text not displaying over the people so it made it hard to see what buttons to press. Overall though a great game I hope to see more from you come December I'll be eagerly waiting.

Cluster by Ignacio Zamorano 2018-08-14T13:50:09Z

Game looks great, the animations are fun, the music is nice overall a great entry however I didn't know if I was meant to fight them all or let the pink and green ones in just seemed there was nothing really explaining what their was to do.
