LD35 — Shapeshift

windowframe by managore 2016-04-21T07:29:00

Very well thought out mechanic with an interesting visual style that leans on the fourth wall quite a bit I'd say.

My primary issue was that the controls made going through some of the levels a bit of a chore. There were definitely instances where I felt like I understood what I was supposed to do but failed to execute it properly because jumping is so hard to do precisely on a mouse and keyboard. I would recommend adding controller support for future versions.

It's an interesting idea but I didn't have fun with it. The controls were too difficult for me.

Customizable controls was a feature I had planned on adding but alas it never happened. I'm glad you enjoyed it though! :)

Added full screen button on the entry page as a stopgap fix to the scrolling issue.

Yeah the game was supposed to have a notification that popped up after an item telling you what it does but it doesn't currently work. There is code telling it to spawn and the assets for the notifications are bundled with the game but for whatever reason it just never appears. Something to put into the post-LD version.

You most certainly have my permission to use this in a video! This is my explicit permission for anyone interested in making a video with this game for YouTube, Twitch, what have you. I only ask that you include a link to my Ludum Dare entry page in the description, please.

I love the River City Ransom style graphics and that great music (though it is rather loud in my opinion). Combined with the humor, the game had a really bouncy, bright atmosphere.

Where this kind of falls short for me is the gameplay, specifically the button mashing aspect of gaining power. It felt a little tacked on to me.

Web version doesn't seem to be loading up on either the embed or the linked site (Firefox/Windows 10)

I love the art style, it really complements the feeling you're creating of being hunted. I think what you have is a good solid mechanic that you could build something around. I do wish you had been able to explore it further for Ludum Dare, since I found it a little repetitive after a while.

Kenneth Rice: Vampire Detective by GrooveMan 2016-04-19T20:56:00

Very good visual novel! I felt the background outside the speakeasy wasn't necessarily appropriate for the era but that's just a nitpick. Very well written dialogue, I hope to see more!

SandShifter by nesis 2016-04-20T06:06:00

Wow! The shapeshifting mechanic is really awesome! I think you have something to expand on with that.

I did think the game was a little easy though, I wish there had been another level after the third one.

Unfortunately, this game crashed my browser after I died so I am unable to review it. (Firefox 45/Windows 10)

Hotline Trump Tower by Skipi 2016-04-19T06:02:00

Great little game, I think you really nailed the Hotline Miami aesthetic in terms of music selection and mechanics. The art was definitely quite appealing, though I felt the minimalist aesthetic of the architecture clashed a bit with the more detailed character sprites. The premise itself though was pretty amusing and it was definitely a good 10 minute bite of gameplay.

Keysmith's in a hurry! by Felladrin 2016-04-25T15:34:00

This is an interesting little game. I could see it as part of a bigger game like a store management sim or even a job you could do in an RPG town. It did take me a while to figure out which bits with "cute" and which were "stylish." Felt like maybe there should be a tooltip when you highlighted each part or something.

Very funny dialogue and graphics choices! I would have liked to have seen more puzzles and less searching through Wikipedia though.

Dr. Deckenstein: An Adventure in Severed Parts by quill18 2016-04-20T04:37:00

Nice little deck-building game you made! Unfortunately the option to remove wounds instead of taking a card didn't actually seem to remove said wounds in my playthrough. I also had issues reading some of the text on the cards because it was so small, I wish there had been a full screen option but what I was able to read did get a chuckle or two out of me!

Morphing Maria by Frozen Fractal 2016-04-21T00:55:00

Great puzzle design! Difficult enough that you feel clever after you've solved them.

I do wish that the controls were a little less sensitive, I overshot switches far too often and having to restart so often was a little frustrating.
