LD55 — Summoning

If Only by Le Slo 2024-04-16T21:51:47Z

Wow, this was very good. These mechanics are very intricate, and I have the feeling they could enable far more puzzles than what was seen here. These mechanics are very much in your style, reminding me a lot of Alephant. The combination of the physical properties of a candle, as well as the behavior of a "ghost" block work beautifully together, and create something uniquely fitting for the theme, but so rich and thoughtful I would have expected them to have been refined over a much longer time than one weekend. My only complaint, other than minor visual glitches and wanting more levels, is that I was confused by the way I needed to fuse wax together in the first level it appeared in. I think the game needed a simpler level to demonstrate candle wax melting together before that more demanding level, in which I didn't even know what my end goal was. Regardless, fantastic work!

Summoned Army by dasilvacontin 2024-04-16T20:30:20Z

Cool game! I had a hard time strategizing about what exactly I could do to counter my opponents setup, it seemed, to me at least, like the outcomes of battles were fuzzy, and it was hard to see where my setup is wrong. I just sent my soldiers out to battle and hoped for the best, which is still a very fun feeling! I'd be curious to know how exactly you are handling the collisions between the large number of units. It worked well for the most part, but I often noticed that some enemy units would clip into each other, perfectly overlapping. I imagine this is due to some necessary shortcuts taken for performance, and it wasn't anything game breaking. Nice work!

Very, very well made game here. I haven't completed all the levels yet, but I will definitely be coming back to do so. The "summon block" mechanic forces me to rethink what I know of Sokoban puzzles, what make a block "stuck" etc, and the goals being tied to the shapes of the block forces you to think much more deeply about the limitations of how blocks can be moved in order to find a working solution. Also, really cute art and GREAT music :) Awesome work!

Elements of Kha by WouterK12 2024-04-16T20:06:05Z

I love the artstyle! It's so cute and friendly looking. Great use of color and simple shapes. The menu/tutorial were a great inclusion too. I may just need to spend more time to understand the strategies, but I felt that each element had unique benefits, but I wished that they were telegraphed more explicitly before using them. For example, one of the elements created a line across the screen to attack all enemies, but it's preview showed a short line, just like the ability that creates a small group of rocks in a line. I feel like I would have been able to strategize more effectively if I had more descriptive previews of what each attack will do. A game that does this really well, but in a turn-based setting is Into the Breach, which shows a preview of what the attack does as an example when hovered, but this sort of feature is not at all necessary for a jam game. Great work!

Sumi & Portia: Rescue Service '55 by jpbash 2024-04-16T20:17:59Z

I love the concept of this gameplay loop, trying to keep citizens safe from spreading fire long enough to extract them through the portal. It's the sort of "stay safe for X turns" that Into the Breach was all about. There are a lot of interesting techniques that could be used to beat levels, such as trying to deal enough damage to a fire block to destroy it, separating citizen's and their buildings completely from the source of fire etc. I'm sad that portals kept failing to spawn however :( Glitches happen in short jams like this though, and the concept/execution was good, nice work!

Veggie Summoner by BeanJBunny 2024-04-16T22:01:47Z

The pixel art for the characters and environment are very cute! It's an interesting twist on Blackjack to have a dealer offer to switch one card out for another after the fact. I would often be able to use it to get myself to a lower and safer hand. Nice work!

Space Station Escape by EJC 2024-04-16T20:51:06Z

Hmm, I could not figure out how to beat it. I found two objects and was able to place them in the center room, but could not find anything else to pick up or interact with. Then I died from lack of oxygen :P Credit for being the first entry I've seen not about summoning a literal demon! Lol

Really cool idea! Love seeing games made using love2d, its the tool I work in the most frequently and I hope you enjoyed it enough to stick with it. The 3d renderer for dungeon crawling is really cool. It seems like others in the comments were able to figure it out, so I may be an anomaly, but I was not able to understand what my goal was or if I was making progress. I think that I am simultaneously controlling 16 different characters by moving/rotating, but the results of my movement seem inconsistent. Sometimes when I played, checkmarks and Xs would appear, but most of the time, the characters would immediately seem to fall off the edge, and either the screen would turn black and stay that way, or all I would be able to see from each character's perspective is the background with no other characters or blocks. Because of this, I wasn't able to figure out what my goal was or attempt to beat it. I still like the idea of controlling 16 characters at the same time and using a dungeon crawler perspective. Great work with that!

Follow ME! by OldToadPower 2024-10-08T15:39:33Z

Such a great game! The art is fantastic and funny, and the theme is a perfect fit. The Pikmin inspirations are obvious, but it also reminded me of the speech system in the Oddworld games. I think the fact that my army of little creatures doddles around a little bit and fails to keep up with me is perfect for the feel of the game. It makes it seem like they have a mind of their own and behave independently, and I have to keep running back to them and saying "Hey, follow me!" or "Attack!" multiple times before I'm sure they've heard it. Others in the comments said that made it too slow, but I thought it added to the humor and theme of the game. Awesome work!

Snail Typing by SatLess 2024-10-08T15:31:08Z

Really cool! This was hard as a typing game due to the fact that the letters move instantly after typing them, which made it very hard for me to anticipate upcoming letters, but maybe that's a part of this game's unique challenge. Nice work.

Mr. Ant by taotang 2024-10-08T15:27:08Z

I love it! Doing a purely node-traversal strategy game similar to the map in Slay the Spire is really clever, an the ant survival theme is very cute. I'm curious: Is each level possible? They seem a little different each time so I'm assuming there is procedural generation, are you running a solver to traverse the graph to verify levels? That would be a pretty complicated system for a jam so I wouldn't expect it, but I got the feeling as soon as I spawned into some later levels that the challenge was not possible, but that may just be my own lack of skill lol. Great work!
