LD41 — Combine 2 Incompatible Genres

Deck Shooter by Jimbly 2018-04-25T21:59:14Z

I love the concept so much, and I look forward to playing more of it!

I do feel like there must be some way to have the hand and the "play field" easier to deal with simultaneously, though. Like, maybe even something as simple as having hotkeys for each kind of card? And then the keys just don't do anything if you don't have the card in your hand to use? I just found it slightly unpleasant how I had to dart my eyes between the two parts of the screen.

Sorry if that sounds overly critical or if that's unwelcome feedback; I really do love what's here already!

I see what you mean.

Maybe if there were icons near the player's ship or something? I don't know. It's something you've already spent some time trying to figure out and by no means do I mean to suggest that there's a simple answer!

Regardless, the important thing I want to communicate is that I like the idea a ton. :)

So I played more and finished, and the final two levels were nuts! Haha. What I was saying earlier barely applied because I was mostly only staring at my hand and trying to spam certain things and keep an eye on my health. I'm not saying that as a negative, either; it was frantic fun.

Really nice job. This is great stuff and I think if you spent time refining it and expanding it, you could have this appeal to a lot of people.

I enjoyed playing this a ton as-is, but I feel like you should take the concept a bit further. I too gave myself the goal to get to the top of the structure, but once that felt impossible I didn't care about getting my score (1610) any higher.

This is a really cool concept and I love the minimalist look, but as-is there's just not much motivating the player to continue.

This is one or two ideas away from being fantastic, but regardless of that: I enjoyed my time with this a lot!

Think Hockey by RilleP 2018-04-24T00:13:26Z

Turn-based hockey is a game design challenge I've been interested in for a while, and this seems like a really good start but I'm honestly confused about how to shoot! It also seems like there's no passing in this, right? (No passing might be a good balance decision, though.)

I was really drawn in by the challenge of it!

Really dig the coherent, cohesive style.

Thanks for the feedback, all!

@sndr I indeed have some distant plans to turn this into a more fully-fleshed-out game. I had such dreams of grandeur on Friday, haha... those ideas are still ripe for the picking!

@fashionbatman @BelowParallel_Ian It sounds like the game was perhaps not working as intended, but I thought I tested it thoroughly... there's some chance that you weren't "far enough" into the game, but I'll keep an eye out for more feedback. Thanks for playing!

Game is on itch.io now, btw, for anybody reading later: https://devinwilson.itch.io/deal-them

@Jimbly It's just hard. :)

I like the idea of an abstracted Slugfest machine! With more time, I think you'd have something really cool on your hands.
