Ah, nostalgia

euler-moises 2026-10-20 00:44 ♥ 1

@euler-moises

Great twist for the movement, i love that mashing a diagonal button (1, 3, 7 and 9) makes the snake go in diagonal without the hassle of going between two buttons and pressing them.

I also like that this game could be put in a NES cartridge and plays directly on the system.

Good game !

kultuk 2026-10-20 20:42 ♥ 1

Cute twist on the movement! And the diagonal keysade we wonder of that how it worked back then but I really can't remember 😅

wendel-scardua 2026-10-20 21:49 ♥ 1

@kultuk the diagonal keys did work like that, yes (at least it used to work on my [Nokia 2280](https://www.nokiamuseum.net/nokia-2280---2003))

The _But Buttons_ game by @euler-moises was a good warm-up for this game. Nice job setting up the game in a way to be modular enough to support multiple level layouts, gameplay speeds, and more.

Having click/touch controls would be really nice I think, just have the thumb jump to the pressed button. Maybe making it NES compatible is why it was not implemented though?

Lastly, the snake swallowing animation was cute, I was pleasantly surprised that the large critters were edible.

wendel-scardua 2026-10-21 03:41 ♥ 0

@nbumgardner yes, with it being an actual NES game there's little I could do in terms of click/touch. To be honest, there *are* homebrew games that are able to be played with the SNES mouse (with some adapter I suppose?), but I've never implemented such thing before and I don't even know if that JS emulator supports it)

Classic!

Memories coming back haha thank you for this small yet really well executed nostalgic game. Everything works perfectly find as intented, and the fact that you added mazes and cheat mode is a really cool plus. Congrats for your work !

aaron-mumu 2026-10-23 07:36 ♥ 1

Fun and charming entry, and the humor really landed for me. Impressive that it actually runs on NES too. Nice work!

sejme 2026-10-23 07:48 ♥ 1

Using the thumb was a great twist to this classic peace!

captandrey 2026-10-23 07:49 ♥ 1

Hard nostalgia incoming :) Are these critters from a real phone game? Somehow the fat one looks really familiar.

tigerj 2026-10-23 18:25 ♥ 1

What a clever throwback, I remember when my friends got their "newer" nokia phones with what I called "the weird version of snake with no walls" this took me back to a specific memory of playing that outside a coffee shop in Tallahass Florida 20 years ago. I have not thought about that night in a very long time. I enjoyed all of the mazes, the keypad and finger emulation was a delight to play with.

Thanks for sharing.

also, there is a Nokia specific JAM series on itch if you are interested in making more more Nokia/Nokia likes https://itch.io/jam/nokiajam8

What a fun twist to a classic game. Love the snake design and how it gets bigger where it eats things. Also adding mazes is a very good idea. Overall simple but very good entry, good job!

klengh 2026-10-23 21:12 ♥ 1

A good take on snake! I like how the indirect input increases difficulty and also adds a metaphysical layer to the game.

wendel-scardua 2026-10-23 23:13 ♥ 0

@captandrey yes, the critters exist in the original Nokia Snake II (it took me a while, between looking at old videos of people playing the original and checking other people's reimplementations of it, to figure out details like that 😅)

lomna 2026-10-24 12:11 ♥ 0

Really nostalgic! Having to move the thumb manually adds challenge to a game most would already be familiar with, so it's a clever way of increasing difficulty while also staying true to how we experienced it on an old phone.

retrific 2026-10-24 15:36 ♥ 1

You nailed the visuals. Looks great. A bit annoying that you have to basically double-press the direction you want to go and then also confirm it, but you can get used to it.

wendel-scardua 2026-10-24 17:13 ♥ 0

@retrific ... and that's why I had added Cheat Mode, I knew people may want to just play Snake after the novelty wears off 😅

hinamarina 2026-10-24 19:02 ♥ 1

Really impressive entry! A really really close recreation of the original, brought me back so many memories of my first cellphone! So good, such a classic! I really liked how you used the interface to mimic the actual cellphone. Even tho the idea of pressing the button feels really tactile, I feel that the gameplay gets a little annoying with the double input. It could have been amazing as an extra mode and the cheat mode be the default one. That said, Being able to use the corners to play enhanced so much the nostalgia to me! Overall a really impressive work, Thank you for the game! :)

[Thanks for submitting your game to stream!](https://www.twitch.tv/videos/2909045755?t=01h08m13s)

So nostalgic, playing snake like this. 😄 My favorite detail is the bump that the snake gets whenever I eat food. 🍎

dippyshere 2026-10-25 14:27 ♥ 1

Wow, an NES game! The control scheme is an interesting twist, although I found it quite hard to get used to. I had no idea diagonals were even a thing on nokia snake.. I don't have an NES but I played it on my 3DS so I could have a d-pad 😄 IMG_5223.jpg

And thanks for featuring our game on your unusual platforms post ❤️

brusi 2026-10-26 19:53 ♥ 1

Ha! A NES game mimicking a finger mimicking playing on a Nokia! A sweet take on the theme. I also really like indirect-control games. Controlling the finger, rather than the snake, was a really cool take on the old-tech theme. You got this right!
