Very excited to play this when you add a link!

memel06 2025-10-06 10:31

Please add the link to the game, I really want to play it out!

dr-braur 2025-10-06 13:33

I've added the link :) https://dr-braur.itch.io/beaver-bailiff

It's not 100% finished and there are few small bugs, but it should be playable

dr-braur 2025-10-06 17:51

I think it's more or less ready :) Please enjoy and leave some feedback!

Never underestimate what it does for your game to make the player character a cute little beaver in a pinstripe suit.

The biggest struggle now is just balancing—how you can respond to every new lair spawn with a shrine vaguely in its direction. It'd be cool to mix in more meaningful choice with jacking up the spawns/difficulty until you have to sacrifice some buildings, maybe making certain buildings add value in different ways (bank gives you interest? armory gives a damage buff?), maybe another price tier of turrets for that "cheap now to survive the night or save for the big gun for tomorrow?" choice

definitely one of my favorite theme concepts so far, super cool art, nice general design, great beaver

I like the way this baber looks.....

I like the idea of different phases between building and defending. Fitting scenario, that at night the mysterious dark forces appear in form of monsters. It felt quite nice to be able to defend the city, by building shrines quite close to the spawn points, so all the villagers, even though they're pretty much out of money, at least are still alive. Well done on this game.

So cool that you guys pulled a tower defense for the jam :D The gameplay loop is very nice. More variety for towers and monster behavior would spice things up but this is a solid base. And the art style is killing it! Well drawn sprites + the added perspective makes it so cinematic to build an entire wall of towers and watch the monsters raiding (and falling) at night. Here's my building placements by day 10, managed to lose just one house besides the one from the starting cutscene -- guess I got kinda lucky with the first spawn locations being close to each other: beaver_000.png

Looks cool!.

It's unclear at the very beginning. As a result put up five crosses in one place. It was not clear what to do. The screaming had already started to strain and annoy at the end. But the idea itself is interesting.

maria-sh 2025-10-09 20:16

that was an absolute awesome expirience, I was drawn into this atmosphere and feel all the fear of this screamings. Art is great, game itself is amazing

gwhyang 2025-10-10 11:25

I tried to block every point where monsters was generated with crucify, and this worked. Really love your art!

huihang 2025-10-10 16:16

I can not play the game, too. The online links both unvalid.

haayaargh 2025-10-10 20:27

Very distinct visuals, props to the artist. Same with UI, it felt polished.

I enjoyed raising development of the town. Walking around, checking how small shacks are turning into proper mansions. To withhold the tax collecting when the house was close to an upgrade, and reap the benefits later. It is similar idea I had in my own game, with delayed gratification. Really cool.

What I found lacking a bit, is the Shrines and combat. The first didn't have any visual radius, didn't shoot anything, just damaged on proximity, but you never knew if it is close enough or, whether one will be enough.

Excellent art. I loved the idea of collecting taxes. Some suggestions: * I think the time you wait is too much, I like the animated transitions between night/day, but I fell like I waited a lot of the playtime * The balance is a lit bit off, I ended collection for 1 shrine every night and then put it near the creature's nest. Maybe some kind of penalties to do this abusive strategy? * I think killing creatures could be more satisfying, some kill animation (I know is jam game so fitting those is expensive), maybe see with the camera all the kills you did

Marvellous artstyle! The setting is great. Overall kind of looks like a mix of Don't Starve and Skyrim, maybe a pinch of Dead by Daylight? I like how you can still knock with low attitude but just have to knock harder :)

- As comment above said, it's easy to cheese the game by placing a shrine right next to the spawns. It is also not clear how shrines work -- AOE effect would be useful or a visual cue when a creature is starting to get affected. - Sometimes I'm experiencing a weird shove - I'm not sure what it's caused by - Minimap feels a bit lacking - attacked colours have the same colour as regular houses, character's house also blends in (though it helps that it's somewhere in the center) - Walking gets a little mundane with time - paths with speed boost would be a nice addition, especially that they're in the thumbnail :) also the bushes are annoying to get stuck on 😒 - Spectating monsters could be improved by giving the option to switch between them - also when first monster attacks, camera stays in place instead of jumping to another monster - Press space (or another button) to speed up time (especially when you start the game when you already played it) would be nice - Sounds on LMB/RMB feel like a bug - I'm not supposed to be able to do anything while at the dwelling - "Your dwelling. Enter to skip time" -- "Go inside" instead of "Enter" would be a clearer wording :) - I think this message should be shown over the house like a informational speech bubble:

Amazing! The graphic style is really coherent and fun. I liked how you solved the animation with a simple squish and squash. Even though the knocking mechanic is really simple you managed to hook me into saving the rest of the villagers from the eldritch tentacles. Making a debt collector look good is difficult but I think you pulled it off!

brainloaf-studio 2025-10-17 22:33

Love the art and overall vibes here! It feels ramshackle and a bit disturbing (that scream when the... thing gets them is something else) in the best way. I love having to knock over and over to get funds, though I will admit my finger started to hurt pretty quickly! I feel some additional gameplay elements could spruce up the overall cycle if you decide to develop more on the idea postjam! Great work!

thegrottman 2025-10-21 07:34

I think so far it's one of my favourite games of this LD, based on what I played. Beautiful graphics, fantastic music. Game is extremely coherent, and immensely playable. I cheesed the game a bit and put the turrets by the spawns, so the monsters would have to get through these, however, since the game allows, is it really a cheese?

I think overall I did a pretty good job of being a bailiff. [Beaver score.png](///raw/d8e/36/z/6f847.png)

I'd love to see this game continued and made bigger and better.

noseminer 2025-10-22 00:32

Loved the art, theme, and mood of the game. I thought the economy part was really good and not something ive seen before with some more choices/mechanics for the tower defense part it could end up having some emergent dystopia by making the player want to protect the rich houses.

anaticula 2025-10-22 01:02

That's a really cool game! Took me a bit time to understand how to collect tax but once I managed to do that seemed a bit too easy, cause I blocked all the enemies near their spawn points. Apart from that everything is amazing, art is top notch, and everything else - animations, ui, music - adds up together perfectly!
