Hello and welcome everyone! Originally I set out to enter the compo, but my weekend didn't turn out as planned, so I am submitting this for the Jam. Nonetheless, except for the background music (courtesy of Cynicmusic on OpenGameArt), everything was made by me from scratch during these three days.

As usual, I have a long list of ideas and improvements I didn't get around to, and I'll try to add them in a post-jam version soon, but I'm still happy that I managed to submit something reasonably complete. I hope you enjoy playing!

myheadmess 2025-10-07 19:01

Very cute game ! I loved it !

cgraen 2025-10-07 19:02

fun little game ejoyed the twist at the end ^^

martynas-dargis 2025-10-07 19:10

Would love to see the post-jam version! I liked the story and the fact that you *have* to pay attention to what you're collecting:) Also like that you made this without using a game engine - it's easy to take for granted what a game engine gives you for free.

freeworld 2025-10-07 19:21

That felt like a great foundation for an incremental-esque game! The mushroom collecting is a great choice for the theme!

dhim 2025-10-07 21:05

I was the mondrokko all along! Very nice storyline. The game loop is perfectly timed, each trip is not too long, and the progression in terms of money is fine as well. I mostly increased backpack size and a bit of speed. - The merchant giving hints (rocks, poison mushroom) is really nice, maybe more trivia about what mushroom are valuable would be even better ("Whaa! a shitake, that's super", "boletus, so common..." ) - Maybe some sound would have been nice.

I myself **[collect GitHub entries](https://github.com/stars/dhmmasson/lists/ludum-dare-58)**: So it's super nice to see you have used GitHub during the development process of the game (42 nice commits). I have started **collecting entries** backed up by GitHub! I have also collected a few tricks to make the repos shinier across my Ludum Dare participations

---

Repo name and Description

You can update the repository name (I always name my repo ldXX and I rename when I have found a name for my game) without breaking links (GitHub redirects old names to new ones), and add a description for inclusion in the list ( still redirect to my repository)

Readme and Badges

Include the link to your ldjam entry in the Readme. I also have created badges that you can use to decorate your README:

``` Ludum Dare Ludum Dare 58 - Compo Ludum Dare 58 - Jam Ludum Dare 58 - Extra ```
Screenshot 2025-10-06 at 08.35.40.png
Topics
Consider using these **topics** on your github description to make your Ludum Dare entry more discoverable: - `game` - `game-development` - `ludum-dare` - `ludumdare` - `ludumdare58` - `ludum-dare-58` - `ld58`
Cover Art
You can also use your cover art for the ```Social preview``` image in the repository ```Settings```
Stars
I have starred and added your repository to a list of ld58 compo:
(Also, I am on a quest to have a repo reach 10 stars. If you play my game, consider [leaving a star on my repo](https://github.com/dhmmasson/tilesCollector) as well.)
I was so very close to making a foraging game. I think they're so cozy and fun. The mushroom spin was a nice take and being able to level up your gear and stats was great. Did not expect that twist at the end. I can't place my finger on why this was the case, but the transparency made it seem like we were in front of the trees instead of seeing through them.
ditam 2025-10-08 23:11
Thanks for the kind words @myheadmess, @freeworld and @cgraen!
@martynas-dargis yeah, I probably wasted way too much time reinventing the wheel here (sprite animations, scrolling viewport, scene swapping etc), but going engine-less is just a lot of fun! I've made all but one of my LD entries from scratch like this.
@dhim thanks, that's a very thorough list of recommendations, I didn't know about topics and social previews on GitHub, I might just start using them!
@bobap I know _exactly_ what you mean by the transparency being off. I think it's somehow an artifact of the drawing method that I used - I'm using the `destination-out` composition mode of the HTML5 canvas. I had to move on and consider it good enough - just jam things _shrugs_...
bobap 2025-10-09 00:01
Holy cow, I didn't even realize you made it native HTML and JS. That is massively impressive. Well done.
eugenik 2025-10-10 13:35
Very fun and amazing game!.
zelew 2025-10-11 10:52
nice game!
mantou 2025-10-12 16:01
A fun little game with simple, easy-to-understand mechanics.
ynnon 2025-10-12 16:28
A cute fun game about searching mushrooms, but at first, I couldn’t figure out how to get into the forest — I tried following the sign and then the path, but kept running into walls. Only later did I realize I needed to press L. Unfortunately, I ran into a bug: when my bag was full, I got teleported back to the village automatically, but I accidentally pressed L manually right after that and ended up in the forest. Later, when I returned to the village for the second time, the merchant scammed me — he took all my mushrooms but didn’t give me any gold. Since then, I haven’t received any gold at all for the mushrooms I collected.
ditam 2025-10-12 17:21
Hey @ynnon, sorry the game has been giving you trouble. I'm not sure how to reproduce that bug you encountered yet, but I have some things to note: you don't need L to enter the forest, you need to interact with the road sign / the end of the road (with E). But this has a needlessly small hitbox, I'll improve this! But pressing L should work fine.
The merchant never intentionally scams you, but if you picked up any poison mushrooms, the whole batch needs to be thrown out - but the merchant will say so if this was the case. Any chance you ran into this? Of course, that wouldn't explain future trips yielding no result. I'll try to reproduce this!
It is possible to open the merchant dialog twice in quick succession which will hide the merchant's reaction to the goods - this is just a visual bug, but even then, you should get the fair price of your mushrooms, with the above caveat.
ynnon 2025-10-12 18:27
@ditam I can’t say for sure if I had any poison mushrooms in my bag (I was picking up everything since I don’t know which ones are good and which aren’t — I even picked up the “useless rock”). But up until that point, my inventory was always cleared, and I received money for the mushrooms — after that, it just stopped. It’s possible that the next few times I collected poisonous mushrooms i guess.
As for the merchant, I also noticed that when I interact with him and the dialogue window opens, I’m forced to buy something — I couldn’t find any exit button, cross, or other way to close the window. It’s a bit inconvenient if I don’t want to buy anything at the moment or simply don’t have enough money.
ditam 2025-10-12 18:49
@ynnon re:the dialog not being closable: oops, that was one of the casualties of the submission rush, I simply didn't get around to adding a close button. But either way, the dialog is not blocking - you can walk to the exit as normal, despite it being open, or just press L. But thanks for the reminder, I'll put it high on the post-jam fix/improvement list.
kapricorn-media 2025-10-12 22:24
Nice game :smile: I liked how you implemented the searching-under-the-trees vibe. It's a simple but convincing mechanic. I had the same issue as @ynnon where, after maybe the 4th or 5th round of picking mushrooms, the guy did not pay me for any of them ever again :cry:
Huge props for building your own game engine from scratch!! I'm the programmer for our team and partially went down that path (used raylib, which is probably a similar experience to HTML canvas). Definitely makes it more fun and challenging haha
snowpriestess 2025-10-13 14:39
Really fun game, I love the ending reveal haha! I would have love to get hints (maybe from the merchant?) to understand which mushroom is poisonous. Also, i didn't get how to exit the merchant's menu without buying anything! But overall it was a lot of fun foraging those mushrooms!
6knowledge 2025-10-13 17:30
Honestly expected something much more slower but was positively surprised it stayed around as long as there was content for. Simple and to the point. It took a few runs to figure out why I wasn't getting any money, but I guess I just got very lucky to never pick up anything poisonous at the start. A well made jam game.
helicule 2025-10-13 21:25
Super satisfying and cosy game! It's refreshing to simply go forage mushrooms without worrying too much about time constraints or enemies to avoid :)
triggthediscovery 2025-10-19 07:51
I really like how it feels like a playable folk tale. Also, always love a native HTML/JS game, not enough people know how much you can do with them.
brainloaf-studio 2025-10-21 20:47
I love progressive games like this, so addicting! The gameplay loop is simple but I like the added depth with the poison mushrooms, it makes it feel more like you're having to discern the mushrooms rather than it becoming a "spam e to collect everything" kind of loop. It'd be cool to see more added to this but I understand the constraints of the format! Nice work!
darianifakina 2025-10-23 15:53
Love art style, good job!
thelastslowpoke 2025-10-24 15:20
The poisonous mushrooms idea was a very good one, and I liked the ending! Congrats on a polished jam entry!
