Now we think of a game that fits summoning. I'll be using raylib of course, in my own game engine.

gnum 2024-04-15 22:47

Great game!

schizoid2k 2024-04-16 00:04

Brings me back to my time in the arcades in the 80s (yes, I'm old). Nice graphics and sound, smooth game play, even with tons of bullets on the screen. Nice job!

lancejz 2024-04-16 02:26

Thank you! I ran into issues near the time limit and was freaking out. Glad you enjoyed it.

lancejz 2024-04-16 20:35

Thank you schizoid2k! I'm old too, arcades of the 80s were my favorites. I'm glad you enjoyed it.

rainbeau 2024-04-18 04:16

Ha! Felt like I was playing Galaga at the arcade. Cool game and nicely done. :)

tryx 2024-04-19 05:21

Had a lot of fun with this one. Great balance between difficulty and enjoyability. Projectiles were not overbearing to the point where I felt like I had too much to focus on, I was able to divert my attention between where the enemies were so I could aim at them, and being able to dodge the bullets as they flew around me. Well done!

emaigualmc2-art 2024-04-19 05:24

Good job! I really liked the retro style, thanks for not hurting any pixels in the process jaja!

lancejz 2024-04-19 18:33

Emaigualmc2, thank you! Glad you enjoyed it! I say that because I use 3D assets, and one pixel per color. Tryx, thank you so much, that means alot to me. I had my wife play it before I uploaded it to help me. Thank you again! rainbeau, thank you! Galaga is one of my favorites, I have one from My Arcade even. <3

pegasys 2024-04-19 19:46

This is a cool little game, my only complaint is that it's quite simple. Would have been cool to see some kind of twist on the genre, or maybe some kind of change up as the rounds get harder. Really liked the retro art style though and it seemed like a very polished game for what it was. Really good job!

wildcodeplay 2024-04-19 19:57

Nice and old. Very hard because you have practically just one life then the level starts from beginning. The turrets look rather week, maybe some upgrade would be welcome (they could aim for example).

cshep99 2024-04-19 23:14

nice old school game! very hard too. i really like the particle effects when enemies explode! also out of all the games I've downloaded for this jam, your exe file is incredibly small! i didn't even realize it had downloaded at first. its the second smallest i played so far. the first being a game called "The Floppy Disk of Forbidden Creatures" but that's not really a fair comparison since it was a command line text adventure.

adam-gallina 2024-04-21 01:33

Really fun - galaga's always been one of my favorite arcade games, and this was a fun take on it with the turrets. You did a great job with the audio balancing and design, even though there were only a few different audio clips used, it was pretty easy to tell where the sound was coming from, and didn't overpower each other.

It would've been nice if the turrets were a little more powerful, they felt kinda underwhelming, and I'm not sure if I got any kills with them - one thing I noticed is that the bullets they shot despawned with the turrets, I'm assuming that was a glitch?

Overall really well done!

lancejz 2024-04-22 18:39

Thank you pegasys, I'm a one man team, and old, so I can't do 24 hour coding/art/sound anymore. I would have added more, but as I said before, Sunday I ran into an issue that took over an hour to figure out, so that also put me behind and I had to really rush it.

lancejz 2024-04-22 18:42

WildCodePlay, that is not true. When you die, only the enemies left for that wave are there. You get four lives. The wave restarts of course, but with only the same number that you died with. Also the turrets do aim, at times, it is random if they do or not. I made them weaker, as they were too much help in the earlier iteration. I did not get enough time to work more in balancing them.

lancejz 2024-04-22 18:45

Thanks Cshep99, that particle effect is part of my 'engine' I made in C++. It uses a pool of course. Well it is in C++ with just the raylib library. I'm old school, I grew up in arcades from the 80s.

lancejz 2024-04-22 18:52

Thank you Adam Galina, I'm old school, I grew up playing Galaga in the arcade, I even have one, from Arcade1Up. Thank you, I may have spent too much time on design, and I had to rush at the end as I ran into an issue compiling the release. I had turned down the turrets, I thought they were too powerful. LOL I wanted to do more balancing but ran out of time. Oh, did I miss that issue with the turret shots. Darn it. Thank you so much for all your input! As with other Dare games, I plan on continuing it and putting it out there on my itch.io.

sleepystudios 2024-04-22 20:16

You've really nailed that retro feeling. From the graphics to the sound effects to the barren emptiness of space. I felt like the character was a bit sluggish though, would've felt a bit better if the speed was up but nice work anyway!

ryusui 2024-04-22 20:31

Solid little old-timey shooter. Very reminiscent of Galaga or Galaxian, with perhaps a little Missile Command. I'd have liked to see the turret summons do more; things get a bit overwhelming and they don't really seem to help much.

digital-bacon 2024-04-23 10:49

Classic arcade shooter with a bit of modern bullet-hell thrown in, gotta love it. Excellent work!

lancejz 2024-04-24 03:24

Good tip @sleepystudios I'll make a note of that. I'm glad you liked it, retro is my vibe.

lancejz 2024-04-24 03:25

Thanks ryusui, I'm glad you like it. Yeah, I ran out of time to fine tune the difficulty, as I stated before, the turrets were too much, so I turned them down, made it so they shoot more randomly.

lancejz 2024-04-24 03:28

Thank you digital bacon, not really modern. Raiden was one of the big bullet-hell games, and it is from 1990, I love that game.

yanato 2024-04-28 12:51

Nice simple retro style and controls ~.~

someone 2024-04-30 23:39

Solid bullet hell shooter. I like the retro style. Would have been nice to be able to hold space to continuously fire. I couldn't fire holding up and left, though up and right worked. Seems to be an issue with this keyboard. The extra turrets were not all that useful.

lancejz 2024-05-01 00:59

Ah yeah, @someone, that did cross my mind, but I forgot to implement hold down for rapid fire. My bad. Ah, yeah I've had a few others tell me that, I rushed the balancing, they were too much to start, so I nerfed them too much. I'm glad you enjoyed it anyway. I'll test the keyboard issue you mention, I did not notice it while testing it. I tested it, and it all works, I can fire while moving Up/left or right and down/left or right.

someone 2024-05-01 01:23

My keyboard issue was a hardware issue rather than your game. I tried it elsewhere and had the same effect. Most keyboards have various key combinations that don't work due to how they are wired. The best solution is either configurable keybinds, or use combos less likely to have the issue. Many games use the z,x,c keys with the arrow keys for instance.

freshd 2024-05-01 04:36

Cool jam game! The graphics and sound fx are very nice. That you created it with your own engine is awesome! Great job!

lancejz 2024-05-02 00:42

Thank you @freshd, I'm glad you enjoyed it! *bows* I made the engine for Arcade style games, 2D but use 3D assets. Again, thank you!

lancejz 2024-05-02 00:43

Ah, yeah, @someone you are right, and I intend to when I work on it more after the jam. Thank you for the added info.

ne-mene 2024-05-03 19:34

Very cool! I love that you managed to squeeze in different enemy types in such a short time, the particles were a nice touch too. You could also add in some squashing and stretching easily in raylib to add extra polish for free basically :), good job!

lancejz 2024-05-03 21:03

Thank you ne_mene. I already have a particle engine in my engine. So it was free. Yeah, making the second one (The one you shoot for spawn points.) was harder, and took the most time. I also ran into an issue that stole a few hours near the end, for making the release. Compile errors! *screams*
