Good bullet SFX but I cannot harvest melons I do not know why

coatline 2022-04-05 02:04

@lokt02 Thank you for the feedback. I'm sorry about that. Hopefully I fixed it. (Make sure it is fully grown.)

sunjet 2022-04-07 10:36

The game is very addictive, I love the sounds very much :) As the improvement I'd like to suggest you to add interaction with melons (hp regen, xp gain, etc.)

coatline 2022-04-09 01:33

Thanks @sunjet! That's a great idea to add depth and such.

realryanrogers 2022-04-09 02:16

Like the others have said, the gun sounds are great. The shooting has solid feel, and the movement is doesn't feel too floaty, or too stiff. The mechanics are fairly basic (not in a negative way), but the gamefeel kept me playing. Great entry!

pennycook 2022-04-09 02:19

The core gameplay loop here is strong, and I had a lot of fun playing it. Good job! A simple jaunty music track is the only thing that would make this feel more complete.

Like @lokt02 I had some trouble harvesting melons. I didn't realize initially that you have to right click *on* the melon itself, rather than simply clicking the right mouse button while standing near the melon. I think you could clarify this in the controls screen, or make harvesting a little more forgiving. I was surprised I couldn't chop them down -- I don't know why I expected to be able to, but I tried it anyway.

jogy34 2022-04-09 02:30

Nice job. I think it really could have benefited from being able to buy upgrades. Also, after a certain point it was easy to stay alive but nearly impossible to actually plant and harvest melons.

coatline 2022-04-09 15:34

I appreciate the reviews @realryanrogers, @pennycook, and @jogy34! @pennycook I realize now that the controls were not completely clear - I will clarify in the future . @jogy34 I agree that there definitely needs to be adjustments made to the balancing. Thanks again!

itskdog 2022-04-09 16:00

Nice work. The shooting felt really good. Interesting way to combine two genres into one game.

hungrycatgames 2022-04-09 16:52

Interesting concept but I had difficulty switching out inventory and planting seeds. Couldn't tell if I had succeed or just dropped that inventory item. A bit more clarification on the controls and some positive feedback in the interface would really help.

suchista 2022-04-09 16:58

Pretty fun game, although I didn't really have any time to properly plant, grow and harvest my watermelons. I managed to harvest 34 of them. Some more audio would be cool. I lost my shotgun at some point, I didn't expect that xD

imaginary 2022-04-09 17:08

Enjoyed it. Very, very cool game. Couldn't figure out how to switch between controls, the first time around, though. You might also bind numbers to the various slots in the inventory.

bentglasstube 2022-04-09 17:30

This was a fun little game, and just needed a few things to make it shine. Obviously, adding music would be a big plus. Adding numbers to pick the item would be an improvement as well, as I often had some trouble landing on the item I wanted to use. Having infinite ammo made the guns feel a little too powerful. Maybe you could reduce the number of enemies and the player would use the seeds as ammo or something to balance it out. Overall, nice work.

hmightypirate 2022-04-09 17:51

It took me a while to realize how to harvest the watermelons. After I did, it was fun! Changing with the mouse wheel feels not very comfortable though. I would add some moments of respite between waves of snails to be able to plant more watermelons.

On one ocassion (after a restart) I could not lay the seeds in the soil. Maybe there is a small bug there.

coatline 2022-04-09 19:51

Thank you @itskdog, @hungrycatgames, @suchista, @imaginary, @bentglasstube, and @hmightypirate. I read and appreciate all of the feedback given and I agree with it all. You all gave me very valid pointers and tweaks.

kiddy 2022-04-09 21:21

I love it, the shoot em up feeling is really cool. It could be cool to have a system of upgrade to unlock the weapon one by one.

gamescodedogs 2022-04-10 17:48

Nice game! Please go on!

turquoise-moon 2022-04-10 22:37

It's a nice game. Making a working inventory system is impressive for a game jam. There were just a few bugs with it though. If you drop seeds and pick them up again you get twice as many. You also don't have enough inventory space to hold everything. So, if you try to harvest the watermelons without dropping something first, you will either pick up the seeds or the watermelons, not both.

theblitz 2022-04-11 06:43

Nice game, hope you can include more items to help the player defend against the slugs in the future :)

m0dsat 2022-04-11 08:45

Actually a bit addictive this one. Movement feels good and shooting, especially with the automatic, is very satisfying. Good balance between fighting and harvesting i think. I would like to have the edge of the map drawn in. Got cornered a few times between slugs and an invisible wall. Also, I would like the guns to have different strengths and weaknesses. Felt like the meta was spray 'n pray with automatic. The recoil animation on the shotgun was amazing, I I would really like it to be as powerful as it suggests. Definitely needs more sound - both sound effects and som ambient sounds if not music. Third game I got to 60 melons before deciding to camp in a corner and wait for the inevitable slug swarm. It did not end well  Thanks for the game.

helen 2022-04-11 16:46

I harvested only 16 watermelons :D - Got distracted by the slug killing, so I planted to late then got overrun by more slugs  Nice game, but for me too many attackers.

coatline 2022-04-12 00:35

Thank you all, I really appreciate you taking the time to play and review my game!

@kiddy That was my initial desire as well! Of course, not using my time wisely doesn't help productivity!

@gamescodedogs Thank you!

@turquoise-moon Thanks for playing! Very useful feedback for I wasn't aware of this bug. The inventory has two parts. A hotbar and a backpack (press E). This is not indicated clearly so you are totally justified for not knowing. Really, I should have just given the hotbar an extra slot!

@theblitz Thanks for playing!

@m0dsat Oh yes, the invisible wall. At the last minute I had realized that the player could walk anywhere so I just slapped some box colliders down and called it a day. That is one thing I struggled with was finding a balance between the different weapons. That is one thing that I would love to try is adding music/ambience and more sfx. I've never really given much effort into those but the difference they make is huge. Thank you for your detailed review!

@helen I agree with you, there are definitely too many attackers! One thing I struggled with was finding a balance between the damage of the weapons, the health of the enemies, and the spawn rate of them. In the end there is more to be desired. Thanks for the feedback.

m2tias 2022-04-15 16:48

I see that all critique has already been covered, so no need to repeat those. Looks ok and plays well. Fun little game! It certainly has a better inventory system than most entries of similar mechanics. Well done! Loved the farty gun sounds.

quinn-patrick 2022-04-18 15:58

This game has a lot going on. Minecraft style farming crossed with slug-apocalypse gunplay makes for a hectic if slightly disjointed experience. It would be nice if hitting the slugs was accompanied by a sound effect. I would also suggest reducing the slugs' health, to increase the fun factor of shredding through them with rapid fire weapons. I also agree that it would be smart to integrate the farming into the game. Maybe you could sell them for money, and then that's how you get the more powerful weapons? It would also help to break the game up into rounds with a rest period in between, just to break up the action and allow the player to focus on the farming for a bit. There's a lot of potential here, good job.

the art is pretty good for a compo game and the controls were easy enough for my 3 year old brother to get.overall pretty fun.good job man
