Of course, I find the level design bugs after I submit. (Some serious shortcuts in two levels because I wasn’t paying attention) Oh well! Past deadline, so a problem for past me to not solve.

bougiebirdie 2021-10-03 23:52

This game was fun! You have a really neat style and the soundtrack shows real effort

mathiouza 2021-10-03 23:54

I loved the second music. I like the level design, there is not many mechanics, but you knew how to exploit them! Great experience!

blind-archer 2021-10-04 00:00

The game is fun to play, slightly floating with the jumping. Nice art style and music. I had a problem with the audio when I muted once and then spacebar kept toggling it which was slightly annoying.

Fun, and I love how it looks.

Really enjoyed the puzzle elements, and there was a certain grim satisfaction when I finally got some of the more timing-based bits done. If you made a load of puzzle-y levels and slapped them in a mobile game you'd keep me amused for hours!

Also a fun little bug: on Linux at least if you click the button to stop the music it keeps keyboard focus, so every time you press space to jump it gets toggled. So you end up playing the unstable-themed game with unstable music

epb9000 2021-10-04 04:41

@blind-archer , @chameth - Thanks for the bug report, I've updated links to new builds that shouldn't do that. In theory. :D I figured this wasn't game-changing, so was fair _game_ to fix. I left all the other bugs in place like the insectarium all my projects invariably are. (Though if you prefer the old behavior, it's still at https://b65sol.com/LD49/ just grab the 01 version)

@chameth - it might actually become one if I can figure out a control scheme that works well on touch screens. I don't like just overlaying a D-pad, but I do have some ideas. I've got a mobile-first puzzle game I've been working on-and-off on over the last year or so too.

@bougiebirdie Thanks! I was originally going to have one song but went kinda overboard. Level 7 only got made because of Run. Was aiming for ending screen music, ended up with ominous boss music and was like "I _HAVE_ TO USE THIS"

@mathiouza Thanks much, a ton of time went into the levels. (And I still made mistakes) Fall Faster is probably my favorite song too.

I'll give everyone's games a play+rate tomorrow.

Controls were good (The floatiness was weird at first but I appreciated how it slowed things down in the harder levels), art was neat, music was great, the levels were clever, and I enjoyed myself the entire time. Great job! :P

littlebeardman 2021-10-09 02:10

I really like the art style, I think it lends itself well to this type of platformer.

I think this game would have benefitted a lot from the player having some amount of control over their jump. I mean I got used to the jump while playing but it never really felt good, more like I was adapting to the jump mechanics. Maybe this isn't entirely a bad thing, idk.

epb9000 2021-10-09 02:29

@littlebeardman I had originally planned to, but then designed the levels and realized I tied timing challenges to the fact that you couldn't. I probably should have worked more on the controls before exploiting the limitation in the level design admittedly.

@lone-wolf Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed it.

jaker 2021-10-09 04:31

Some of the levels remind me of the original Rayman game. I'm not sure why, I think it's the precision-based nature of them.

I thought the graphics were simple, yet effective. Everything was clear and very distinguishable, and it was satisfying to look at. A few of the jumps felt a little unfair as the player had no control over the height of the jump. I think that is something that could be improved. The music was awesome, but it made me feel like I was in a forest rather than a robot in space :D. Still, I loved it.

Overall, I thought the game and its 'unstable' mechanic were well executed.

epb9000 2021-10-09 05:49

@jaker Regarding the music, now that you mention it, I did pick a lot of wood-based instruments for the melodies and stuff so that would make sense. (Especially in Prepare for The Fall.)

Some of the jumps require pretty tight timings - were there any that particularly stood out to you?

jaker 2021-10-09 05:56

I can't remember which level it was (3?), but you start on a falling red platform. Then, there are some jumps where you have very little room between landing on the platforms and hitting your head on the zappy bar. I had difficulty making those jumps.

epb9000 2021-10-09 06:03

@jaker

This timed jump sequence here?

Screenshot_2021-10-08_23-01-14.png

jaker 2021-10-09 06:15

Yeah, my main grievance was not being able to control my jump height at that part. I think other platformers give the player more control by having a short period (like half a second or so) in which the player can hold jump to increase height.

epb9000 2021-10-09 06:34

@jaker Awesome, thanks for the confirmation. I haven't decided whether this game is one I'll continue work on or not, but always good to have a specific problem area in hand since this comment has been mentioned a few times.

I used the fixed jump height as part of the challenge here - waiting for the platform to fall and then jumping off at the right time - but some control would probably make it a little more forgiving so timing doesn't need to be quite so precise.

dob 2021-10-09 07:35

Frenetic and exciting, with a neat look and a fun soundtrack. I don't love platformers where I can't see information I need to survive, and this has a lot of that. Might be nice to offer a wide view of the layout before starting the level (or at least the option for one) to reduce repetitive flailing. Smooth controls, a good look, and impressive variety of levels and parts. Very nice work.

c0nt 2021-10-09 17:02

Great execution of a platformer centred around falling platforms. The levels utilized it differently and were thus pretty interesting. The music was jamming as well.

chesiq 2021-10-09 17:04

Yo! Nice game here! Loved the audio and visuals too! Enjoyed playing it!

zubspace 2021-10-10 19:23

What I like: Consistent art style, nice music, good match for the thing.

Unfortunately I had to give up on level 3 after about 10 tries. It's too hard, because I have no idea what to do and there are no save points.

Still, very good entry for a Compo game. Well done!

zimny11 2021-10-17 13:01

Nice platformer. I like the unique art style and the music. The level 3 is hard, I was so close to the finish one time and then I screwed up one jump! Good job with the game.

macbarette 2021-10-18 19:06

i loveeeddd your game a lot ! such a nice use o the theme and a great athmosphere. the visual are great and the gameplay work very well !

python-b5 2021-10-18 19:41

I found the game a lot of fun, but did get stuck on one of the levels (don't remember which one); I fell into a hole and had no way of getting out. Overall though, nice work! :)

epb9000 2021-10-18 21:37

@python-b5 I knew I should have added a level reset button!

varundevs 2021-10-20 13:41

pretty cool and fun I just played it I really love the gameplay
