Interesting idea but lack of sounds and proper interface hold the game back really hard. Tutorial would be nice too.

benmcnelly 2021-10-04 17:56

You are forgiven, we are all tired! Didn't realize I would have to put up with monster attacks, but I got pretty far! Nice work!

the-lame-brain 2021-10-04 18:04

Excellent! I played your game way longer than I meant to, eventually died because of Angry Wizards.

The tower never actually got built, just constructing it made my stability drain away.

Feedback:

This game really needs more feedback. Where can I build? Where can I not build? What effects do the different buildings have? Especially after I upgrade my capital... what advantages/disadvantages do the upgraded buildings offer?

Combat too, why do I win combats? Why do I lose? The only way I can see to improve my combat is to build a Wizard tower, but I was not expecting that to tank my stability so fast!

I found a bug where I clicked on a tree farm (? I think? It was a house with trees that I can only seem to build on forests?) then couldn't build it, so I clicked to another selection, but I couldn't change my cursor from that selection until I went back to that selection and selected it again.

I Laughed out Loud at your end screen!

I forgive you @circle, I am tired too...

masaru 2021-10-04 18:06

I didn't understand what the different building did, built three mages tower, than lost without knowing what was happening. Very cool idea, the game works very well but feels very confusing...

Also, I barely got to the first upgrade. There's something I missed somewhere about how food works I guess, I tried twice, but couldn't get ressources to be generated fast enough.

dob 2021-10-04 18:09

Interesting concept, well executed. I'd have liked to know how much the different buildings consume and produce. Well done.

ivysly 2021-10-04 18:18

I forgive you, waifu destroyer :) Fun stuff! took some getting used to the UI. these kinds of games are always fun to sink some time into

icedjam 2021-10-04 20:04

Very nicely done! You managed to achieve so much in 3 days, I'm impressed! Keep up the good work

dobryn 2021-10-04 20:16

A very enjoyable piece, challenging for me as I couldn't play it as efficiently as I could, but I enjoyed as far as I could reach. Conceptually it was very very interesting given how different the buildings were, I believe there's more in it.

sasha-v 2021-10-04 20:59

Congrats on finishing your first game jam, that's an achievent in itself! I hope you liked the experience and will do more in the future :) I really liked how much mechanich you managed to put into this in such a short amount of time, and it looked really compelling. Would agree with many commenters above thought that the UI is pretty complicated - I actually didn't manage to figure some of it out - so it would be amazing to add some sort of tutorial in the beginning, or some sort of help section. I liked the graphics, simple but do the job!

dob 2021-10-04 21:48

Hey, thanks for the review back - your comments really made my day. I tried yours to the end also (lost to the hungry god). I really liked the expansion mechanic.

circle 2021-10-04 23:17

@dob wow wow! Yea your game made my day. haha. I'm still really tired, but honestly it did a lot to uplift me out of that. The voice lines were just so funny. I wasn't expecting it. Thanks for playing all the way through my game. It means a lot to me. I'm sorry your people were devoured. Always sad to hear about.

don-fouts 2021-10-05 01:22

I agree with some of the other comments that the UI and audio could use a little work. With that said, the underlying mechanics for the game are really well done. I'm a sucker for city builders, it's cool to see one make an appearance in the jam.

circle 2021-10-05 01:32

@don-fouts Oh hey, you're on the team that made Buggy the Bunny! That game was super cool. I left a comment there that I thought was funny, but I didn't really give too much feedback. I'll go edit it and add a bit more, cause I actually had a lot to say about that game.

don-fouts 2021-10-05 01:35

@circle That's us! We try to go through and play everyone's game that tries ours out. Glad you liked the game!

bigassopper 2021-10-05 02:43

I really like the idea and it was a great game!

cinderblock 2021-10-05 03:40

I really like the idea, And I eventually figured out how the mechanics worked.

I think you did very great with the time you were given but boy did you take a huge bite! I'm impressed with what I saw but perhaps tightening up the scope would have given you more time to polish things up.

Either way, I actually really enjoyed what I saw.

I think we need a better explanation of how the food works. A few runs died because I just couldn't get enough food for my civilization, eventually the population would grow, eat all the food, and then die, they would equalize at a lot less than what I had before. So I just spammed cabins because they gave food faster than pop would grow. then I was able to upgrade to Level 2, and had access to farms. From there things were a lot easier, but I also didnt exactly understand how military power worked. It seemed like i was able to beat monsters with 200 military power with just 5 of my own, but then later I had like 15 and wasn't able to beat monsters with around 250 military power? I'm not really sure I understand.

Overall, I liked it!

elveverx 2021-10-05 05:29

I found the grid system really satisfying especially the way the cursor thing snapped from box to box, it felt really good!

chillertyp 2021-10-05 15:12

A lot of tiles... but you need a magnifying glass to see everything.

arong 2021-10-05 15:31

This is a very thoughtful idea. Many items make the whole game look very playable. I look forward to future works.

merri 2021-10-05 16:56

A very interesting idea with a lot of thoughs in it, also it is quite amazing to see how much content you were able to pull out in such a small amount of time, gg !

circle 2021-10-05 18:41

@chillertyp This is actually a really good suggestion. Maybe if I update this game I'll add in a feature to let the player zoom in or out. It wouldn't even be that hard too, only problem would be optimization which is just time.

fractale 2021-10-05 21:03

I wasn't sure if I need to keep forest around my buildings to make them work. nice strategy game.

circle 2021-10-05 21:52

@fractale Actually all the locations will generate different resources based on what's around them. Even if you don't have a magic crystal mine for example you can still generate them by placing cabins near the crystals. The same goes for forests, though it is still far more efficient to place lumber mills on all of your forests. That's not the same for food production though as most of log cabins production is locked into the surrounding tiles. This remains true until you unlock farms which have high base food production, though too many farms will cause your population to grow out of control.

sli 2021-10-05 22:38

Well.. I almost reached the 400th year, but didn't listen to your advice and the angry wizards ruined me

So here is the feedback. UI with resource yields would certainly be nice, but explaining them here also made it playable. I think maybe you over scoped, I would enjoy this more if the map was smaller and it had less buildings, but more polish. Game mechanic wise I'd Love if you could place more roads in chain and not wait for them to finish building, so that can reach other cool areas quicker. Seeing the "you were tired screen" just made my day  I will get a consolatory star for that

Hey listen, I liked it very much I only give so much feedback, because of that  Overall Good Job!

circle 2021-10-05 23:59

@sli Wow wow you actually made it to the 400th year? Thanks for playing so much, it means a lot to me. Also yea, the wizards aren't well balanced. Their numbers don't work. On the subject of roads, I thought about that a lot too. Maybe if I add in a system to paint the roads a certain distance away from a nearby settlement, like five tiles or something? And yea, my scope was definitely wrong. Even cutting half the features I originally came up with, I had to work like crazy the whole weekend to finish. And by finish I mean skip on providing any tutorial or feedback on ui or adding music or sfx. My next Ludum Dare, I think I'll have a better idea of how much I can actually get done in a weekend. Maybe I'll also partner up with an artist, creating art assets is really hard for me and takes a long time.

agushmar 2021-10-06 18:40

increible, me costo entender al principio, pero luego se hace enviciante

lesinvisible 2021-10-06 18:47

This games has very ambitious ideas, it's understandable that for such short amount of time it's hard to polish everything. But I liked the overall feel and I always liked city builders.

cresceda 2021-10-06 19:07

Fun take on a economy simulator!

2021-10-06 20:01

Very fun, very addictive game, good employment of the theme this year. Naturally a little unpolished, given the parameters, but endless replay value even in this alpha release. REally excited to see what it might look like if given post-jam attention!

kiwi663 2021-10-07 15:46

Nice job, very nice graphic.

dizzydon 2021-10-07 17:19

love this.

datadazer 2021-10-08 00:00

It was very satisfying slowly building up a city and seeing everything grow. This game has a lot to it, and was a lot of fun! This did feel like an extremely ambitious game, and you executed it really well. It's awesome and hope you have the opportunity to keep working on it!

emaigualmc2-art 2021-10-09 00:47

I found it interesting, I think that the different constructions and mechanics would need more explanations in general for the game experience to be better. Visually the designs are interesting, I think they would need to be more polished and I would increase the resolution and size of everything to make it more visually attractive. Keep working and well done! xd

papabirb 2021-10-12 08:09

The lack of feedback on how far out I was allowed to build was very confusing, as well as figuring out which tile I needed to click on to select/deselect things, also figure out that the weird grid line icon was roads (not sure what that does, I assume extends buildable areas). The lack of visual/audio feedback discouraged me pretty quick, so I didn't get very far, but it seems really fun in concept - sort of a tower-defense city builder of sorts, which sounds like it would be great with enough time for polish and tutorials.

I read the entire description, but just didn't understand what I was doing enough to get as far as the monster attacks. That's probably on me though, I'm just a little bit of an idiot sometimes, and it seems other people managed to get that far. I think this is a complicated game to make and good work on your first jam / sharing online project! I'm gonna drop you a follow on here and itchio so that if you ever polish this up, I can give it another shot! :)

circle 2021-10-12 18:35

@emaigualmc2-art Yea, I'm working on a new version currently, I redrew almost all the assets at a higher resolution and put a little more time into them. I'm also working on making it so the player will be able to zoom in and out to see more or less of the world. Here's an example of the first level capital building before and after:

before:

after:

newcapital.png

@papabirb Thank you so much for the follow on itch, that's so cool. I didn't even know that was a thing that existed that people could do. You mentioned roads, there's actually been a lot of confusion regarding their function and what they are. I'm polishing the game up and adding new content, but I think I'm just gonna remove the roadBuilding from the game. I wasn't 100% sure, but reading your comment here was the last nail in the coffin for them. Also, yea lack of tutorial is unacceptable for a game like this. To be honest, I've never tried making a game in three days before and had no idea how much I could do in that time. I got a lot of content in, but I didn't have hardly any time for polishing. I was still fixing game breaking bugs like two or three hours before the jam ended.

Anyways, to everyone who gave me feedback, thank you so much. It's super helpful and means a lot to me. And, if you go see your own game page and see that I didn't leave feedback for you, it's generally because I couldn't play your game due to my dinosaur computer's graphics card not having the drivers for a lot of modern software. To those people, both of which are the two people mentioned in this comment, I am truly sorry. If there's something else I can do for you, let me know.

papabirb 2021-10-12 18:54

@circle Shame about the graphics card, but no worries, I understand! Though if you've got a smartphone my game plays on those too  Really though, I'm just glad I could help with coffin nails and educating about itchio follows, lol! Looking forward to seeing this game more polished in the future! :blue_heart:

circle 2021-10-13 16:48

@papabirb Haha, when you put it like that it sounds so negative! Ima go check your game out on my phone, I hadn't thought of that. . . Maybe I'm actually really dumb?! Big surprise. Anyways, thanks so much for the help. Deep appreciation.

lilkrit 2021-10-20 03:55

Very ambitious for a jam game :)
