Hi @js, nice game! I like your mechanic! For the next time; the fish is always visible, so It would be nice to see some animations. And some details in the world, like trash or plants, so that the player has to search more. But I like the game :)
This was a nice moody little game. The music and the darkness went well together. It would have been cool if predators would have been attracted to the light as well. But I enjoyed swimming around as a cute little angler fish for a few minutes, so this is a perfect Ludum Dare entry. Great work!
A neat game idea, and the effect of the lamp was great. The audio was a bit loud though. All round a great submission, well done
Thanks for the nice feedback!
As for the ideas how to improve it, I of course wanted to do more to improve the environment, etc. However, the time is limited so I had to cut the scope.
Btw @bloham, the anglerfish is indeed animated, but probably the animation is too subtle, especially the idle one. Something to improve next time.
Nice visuals and audio and overall a nice game. It's nice to see another light based game :D
The music has an abrupt ending for the loop and restarts. I think fading it in and out would help with that. Also adding different kinds of fish would be great. But this was a great little game, and everything worked very well. I particularly liked the light ability.
It is a big hard to control, otherwise interesting idea. :)
I dig it! I love the idea that you took a super simple classic concept, and added this layer of weird existential fish dread on top!!!! It is strangely effective, the light mechanic is a neat twist. I'm not very good lol, only about to get around 40 seconds as best time. In my mind, jams are all about finding neat things to play around with, and I think you've pulled that off.
A very solid concept and well-built for speed-runs! I would have liked a visual counter on the number of dashes you have before the cooldown (3, I think?) but it was easy to feel out and satisfying to lure fish into a row and take out a big chunk at once - nice work!
That was very cool. It was a great moment when my dash fell just short of a group of fish and they got away, forcing me to play again to improve my time :)
Thanks again for the nice feedback!
@lelulagames Yes, I noticed that, too, but it was kinda too late to fix it and it happens only around once per minute, so I'm ok with that.
@zarthas 40 seconds is not a bad time! I always like to add some kind of simple score to jam games, so people can try again and improve if they like the game.
@tomatolamp You can see the cooldown on it in the right corner, the icon with fins. You have 1 charge, but if you eat fish, it resets so you can go into a killing spree. Maybe something I could have written in the instructions.
This is simple, straight, and to the point. I like that - and it's a very admirable quality in a game-jam filled with seemingly thousands of entries. I think my only complaint is that the dash felt a little finicky and I wasn't sure how the movement was being directed after clicking, and it seemed like the angler had a weird about-face after doing the dash.
That being said, I agree with others in thinking this is an ideal gamejam game. Congratulations on a job well-done.
Great looking game, the spotlight works really well, the audio seemed to be clipping a bit (not sure if it was because it was web based)
It's fun to finally play as angler fish. It's like a typical "scary underwater enemy" in games, and now you lure poor fishes into your spiky jaws yourself!
Simple but fun, love the combo-ing you can do by dashing after eating a fish
