LD36 — Ancient Technology

Return of the Ancient Technological Golems by Zarthas 2016-11-14T05:40:00

Thanks very much for playing! I definitely agree with your assessment, time completely got away from us on this one, spent too much time doing extraneous things and not nailing basic mechanics. We've been polishing it up a bit and we should have a releasable version soon, I'll send you a link. Thanks again!

@warrrkus, thanks for playing!

I think if you played the very early 1.0 version, there was actually a melee attack hitbox bug that may have been throwing you off!

The game is hard! When a monster holds his weapon behind his head, it means he's about to swing at you! An enemy's turning speed goes way down when preparing an attack, so you are able to maneuver out of the way if you move in the direction of the swing.

Try approaching opponents from the left or right side, depending which hand they're holding weapons in.

Melee combat is really about hovering just outside of attack range and darting in to deliver strikes when there's an opening.

You can use shields to block incoming hits!

I appreciate your thoughts! I think maybe the combat mechanics are not transparent enough. We'll work with communicating some of this to to player in the future!

I'd be super, super interested if seeing if you had any additional thoughts on the build with the bug resolved!

@tomatolamp Great feedback! Really great point on not being able to Tap attack at the end of an attack animation. I'm going to move to a system where you Hold Mouse Button to "ready" an attack, and release to swing. This'll solve that problem as well.

I'll knock that bug out too!

Thanks for the feedback, glad you enjoyed it!

@sam-minh thanks for playing! The game is really hard! I can't get past level 5 or so, so far. There's some technique to staying just out of striking distance and darting in to deliver your own strikes, and you definitely have to be conscious of which side of your enemy you engage on!

@alina-baybulatova thanks for the kind words!

I dig it!!! That aesthetic is great, really captured that like, late 90's crunchy feels. Looks sorta like Dungeon Keeper in some bits, and that's about the highest praise I can give there. I think what you pulled off here technically is really cool, excited to see other GMers kicking this stuff around. The game is so frustrating but I had fun!!!!!

Weird, but I kept hold down!

I was SO frustrated and still having a good time. Very clever! The art was great, the little squeak the knight does is very funny. Well done!!!

Upset Crab by 43sam 2021-04-27T23:47:46Z

Fun! We got to level 6, we didn't intend to play for so long, I think that's a good sign!

Anglerfish Feeding Frenzy by js_ 2021-04-27T18:33:19Z

I dig it! I love the idea that you took a super simple classic concept, and added this layer of weird existential fish dread on top!!!! It is strangely effective, the light mechanic is a neat twist. I'm not very good lol, only about to get around 40 seconds as best time. In my mind, jams are all about finding neat things to play around with, and I think you've pulled that off.

This was fun! I like that its essentially a puzzle game with a bonkers presentation and minigames, really clever way to approach a jam in general I think. I felt like a true gamer at several moments when I figured out how to proceed.

Penguin Paradise by LucaVazz 2021-04-28T00:10:38Z

Interesting little idle game/townbuilder thing! Didn't have a ton of time to dig into it, I got to mining, but it looks like a fun little experience. I was sort of expecting an RTS for some reason, but I was pleasantly surprised. I was for some reason heavily invested in that penguin telling me to do stuff, good idea there.

ALTAR by elosociu 2021-04-27T19:15:30Z

Fun!!! Love the aesthetic, the sword-charge concept is clever and really effectively pulled off. It is really in that comfy Quake-esque shooter place. I could not for the life of me figure out what I was meant to do, but I had fun! I want to play a larger version of this, and I think that's a pretty great sign for a jam game.
