Thank for playing our game :)

I dont know why this comment section hasnt exploded yet.. Such an amazing game! The music together with the visuals, I just wanted to get out of there. I still dont understand the meaning of the UI element right next to the flashlight tho :D

barelyevengames 2021-04-30 22:46

I played your game! Check it out! https://youtu.be/DHfy_7ZtjHk

Very nice game with nice graphics and audio! Maybe some more UI Settings could polish it even further, such as Keybind controls and Audio volume. As a first game jam, I think it's understandable that such minor things are missing and that is fine. The game itself is pretty impressive for a first, Congrats!

Another feature that could have been added would maybe be some kind of death count, to make it more competitive between friends and such. Overall, great game!

I really like this game! I really like the artwork, and the atmosphere is great. I would have liked to have seen more scary bits and maybe the occasional jumpscare, but for a jam game this is great! I really like pixel art horror games like this.

I did run into one issue, however: I have a 120Hz monitor! Jumping was actually impossible for me. I couldn't even clear a one-tile gap to jump over the enemies on the floor.

However, I have a fix for you! I cracked open the game (hope you don't mind) and looked at the source code. In `player.lua`, on lines 275 and 276, you're applying "friction" (damping) to the player's movement like this: `self.vx = self.vx * .9`. However, this damping is not applied based on delta time, and assumes 60Hz.

To apply damping based on delta time, those lines should look like this: `self.vx = self.vx * math.pow(.9, dt * 60.0)`. Once I applied this fix, the game became perfectly playable for me, and my jump arc looks as it does in the video BarelyEvenGames posted.

Super solid little game, the art was pretty solid and your sound effects were excellent, my only complaint is that during the falling sequences it was too difficult to dodge the mouths and felt mostly like luck whenever I got through them (it was still a pretty nice feature though). And while the game is certainly good without it, it would be nice if the flashlight was used for more than just killing the face monster

lysenti 2021-05-01 09:02

@anton-florey @zuwu @shaymin I really appreciate your comment, thanks again for playing !

@alchemic Like I mentionned in the changelog, thanks for your bug report. :)

@barelyevengames Fantastic feedback, thanks a lot for your valuable advices !!

nikaz 2021-05-01 10:30

It's cool game! I like these creepy art and music.

ithebredor 2021-05-01 13:42

Fell in love with atmosphere. Nice ambient. Cool graphics. Enjoyed falling down. Thanks a lot for the game and espeially for checkpoints!

sacredbacon 2021-05-01 14:39

Art was cool, I especially liked the barnacles, the flashlight ran out before i got to the end, but if you spam the F key, it kinda works out. Controls are very good, and i liked the flashlight idea. Very spooky, great job!

lrvstudios 2021-05-02 20:34

What an incredible atmosphere! I don't know what to say about this game ... I just loved it! The sounds, art style, enemies... and everything in this game give a lot of weight to the mood. Great work!

We played your game in multiplayer two days ago during our stream. Here is a link to the exact place in the video archive if you wish to see it again: https://www.youtube.be/watch?v=aC3sZsRjx5g&t=4122s

What a nice game! It was fun to play, the control were nice and as a player bad at platformers, I really enjoy your generosity with checkpoints.

The game is really dark though, a bit too dark. I think you could tweak the size of the emission of the torchlight or the light circle around the player without it affecting too much the gameplay.

The control of the torchlight could also follow the mouse, regarding of the facing direction of the player, this would make it much more usable.

But theses are small nitpick ^^ Congratulation!

harrison-dunn 2021-05-03 12:31

Erp. Nope nope nope nope nope. I couldn't play this long. That big face was a bit too much for me. So good job on that, but not my style. What little I did play felt a little too floaty. I was constantly sliding into obstacles and the falling section was difficult to navigate. The hitboxes on the big face and the ground traps also felt off. Or maybe it was the player? I got hit by those a lot when I thought I shouldn't. It also felt really bad not to have the mouse follow my cursor if my character was facing the wrong direction. I see what you're going for, but it makes the mouse controls feel clunky, even if it's more 'realistic'.

lysenti 2021-05-03 13:48

@harrison-dunn Erp. Sorry for you bad experience, and thanks for your honesty. I am saddened that you didn't find any positive points in our game, but thank you for the review by the way. :)

lysenti 2021-05-03 13:51

@nikaz @lrvstudios @sacredbacon @ithebredor Thank you very much for you comment ! It's very motivating. :)

lysenti 2021-05-03 14:17

@togis Big thanks for the live test! It's always very interesting to see players playing your own game. I've noticed that hardly anyone thinks of going up or down during the falling part, which makes it easier to manage. So it is clearly an error of clarity on my side. Thanks to you two again. :)

harrison-dunn 2021-05-03 14:51

@lysenti I'm sorry for misleading. I gave it good ratings for theme, innovation, and mood. I recognize that going for what I experienced was conscious. I personally don't like that style, but you executed the style well. That's a good thing, right? Good game, but not for me lol. Thanks for your reply :)

bajtix 2021-05-03 23:52

The game has a nice atmosphere, but is a little too dark in my opinion so I ended up randomly pressing keys and trying not to die. The pixel art is really clean and nice, so it's a shame that the flashlight battery doesn't really allow to take a better look at it.

tomssuli 2021-05-04 19:03

Great scary mood, I like platforming so this was definitely my cup of tea.

I think you could consider the flashlight following the mouse all the way even if you're not facing that direction... Now it felt a bit unresponsive because of that. The falling sequence was maybe a bit too floaty and bugged so that when I died and started it again, there were no obstacles.

Graphics were cool, and fit well to the creepy mood with the music. I liked the different enemies. The faces were a pain because of the mouse control thing, but they were not so frequent, so I could handle them.

Nice touch adjusting the light power! I only understood why after my flashlight ran out

mighty-mufflon-games 2021-05-05 11:27

This game is freaking awesome! The mood is incredible tense. You created great horror platformer there.

defilerzero 2021-05-05 23:05

Game had a great atmospheric presentation. Was a delight to play through.

colin-misbach 2021-05-11 03:21

Always love the classic following eyeball, got me in the mood immediately! I felt like the "slippery floor" gimmick didn't have to be that way. I'm not sure if it was intended to be smooth "deceleration", or literally like you are walking on slippery guts, but I think just having the player stop immediately after letting go would have felt better (especially when you need to make precise movement inputs). The jumping was done well though, it felt good.

That said, I loved the horror aspect, and I thought it was done really well for a game jam, let alone 2D platformer. The art accompanied it nicely. Good job!

sombrero-guy 2021-05-11 03:35

I love the mood! I was on the edge of my seat the whole time and I about crapped myself the first time one of those flying heads came after me! I couldn't really find anything that I didn't like. Very nice work overall!
