Hey! Pretty cool game! I really like the graphics and the music is quite addictive! I think the camera should be a bit farther from the character, I often found myself really close to the enemies, making it hard to dodge their shots!

Overall well done :D

@solah : Thanks. I had a good teacher ! \*-*

@sashabox : Ah ! It loops ! I get it ! Thank you very much =D

voxel-forest 2021-04-26 12:47

Good game, but I take a little moment to understand where to go. maybe a little too easy when you rush to the right. And also the shoot sound is too loud, that's a shame because the music is fricking good! Nice job tough, that a fun game!

masaru 2021-04-26 13:21

@voxel-forest : Thank you very much ! I did the entire sound design during the last few hours, I'll take a note for next time and try to think about this a bit more ^^.

solweak 2021-04-26 14:47

It's hard to explore, good job on the 3d assets, they give a strange uncanny feels, what'up with the infinitething space ship :smile: . Keep up your effort !

masaru 2021-04-26 17:46

@solweak I might be wrong, but I think I know what you mean : they're not "low-poly" (I'm not good enough to do good looking low-poly 3D), but they're not really detailed either, it's a kind of in-between which might work or not depending on people. The "infinite thing space ship", if you mean the big wheel that turn, I just went and did random stuff, playing with settings and it ended up looking like this, I couldn't explain why it looks that way, it's just "oh, this is a thing, let's see what we can do with it" kind of thing ^^. And thank you !

axeltherabbit 2021-04-27 12:01

You must have put a lot of time for all of those models :D.

masaru 2021-04-27 12:08

@axeltherabbit I did spend a bit of time on them yes ^^ I want to become a 3D artist, this is what I found to be the most fun every time I do an LD, so I try to make the best 3D graphics I can with my limited skills and knowledge =).

dyp54 2021-04-27 12:53

nice little game, I like it, I think this game has potential. Good job to the whole team

dyp54 2021-04-27 12:53

rate me on my game too please

masaru 2021-04-27 13:14

@dyp54 Thanks, the "whole team" is just one guy as that's a compo game ^^. I'll take a look at your game later, you don't have to ask for it, the more game you rate the more rating you'll get =).

ramkey 2021-04-27 18:50

Hey, I'm amazed by the fact you've made all these models in such a little time. First take I went left and nothing was preventing me. Made me think there's a cool bug making my levels go to - but then realised its intentional. Fun music! The display might need to be a bit wider, since I ended up killing lot's of enemies of screen

jason-wilson 2021-04-27 18:58

Well done putting this together in 48h. I was a bit confused when the level counter read -1, I thought I was heading the wrong way especially after reading the description. I then turned around and saw that the level was now --1. :)

Even though I knew better, I kept expecting the ship to remain facing and shooting right when I moved left so I could dodge incoming enemies and projectiles while still firing forward. This is pretty standard for the genre, so I think that's where that instinct was coming from.

There was also a slow moving blue cube that looked like a "powerup" to me. It didn't get hit by my bullets, but when I went to pick it up it destroyed me. I'm assuming it some kind of projectile from an enemy ship.

noef 2021-04-27 19:08

Nice little game, speed parameter, camera view and some sound fixing, (one of the sfx sound was a bit loud ;) and it would be realy good.

secret-magic-404 2021-04-27 19:11

Oh yeah... that's a really good one :smiley:

The art and gameplay reminded of an old flash game called Platypus. I think the strongest point about your game is the enemy diversity. Also it was funny to go to level " - - 1 " and get negative scores :laughing:

bitshift 2021-04-27 19:12

Try playing with ZQSD for hard mode!

masaru 2021-04-27 22:09

Thank you very much you all =D

@ramkey : Killing enemies offscreen was "intended" in a sense, they should probably spawn a bit closer but that was intended ^^.

@jason-wilson : The "level display" was, with the background moving down, my way to say "look, I've seen the theme, I know I'm not going to be in it, but I've tried". I went into this LD really wanting to make a Super Fantasy Zone clone, that's a shoot them up where you need to kill special enemies to go to the boss and where the levels are big horizontal loops where you can go left or right, hence why this feature is there. Obviously, when I saw the theme, I became very sad and decided to just go with some visual stuff but still do what I wanted to do, I think it kinda paid off in the end ^^.

The blue cube is one of the two attacks of the "boss" (the big wheel thing), there's a laser that stops and then goes super fast and there's the slow cube. To me, because I've seen it in other shmups, it made sense as a "bullet" but now that you say it... it does look like a power up ! Sorry about that. Should have made them destructible as well, that would have worked and that's a very good idea... I should have had but didn't ! ^^

@noef : The camera and sfx issues are real issues, the speed parameter is a consequence of a dropped feature : the game was supposed to have a shop and in there, you would have been able to buy speed upgrade and damage upgrade. I didn't have the time to code it sadly, and so I tried to put a base speed value that would "work" to me, but didn't have the time to really solve this either.

@bitshift : ^^. ZQSD is just WASD in the AZERTY layout (which is the one I'm using, as it's the standard in France), using it on a QWERTY keyboard must be a weird experience !

masaru 2021-04-28 10:08

@secret-magic-404 I missed your comment ! Thank you very much =D

pd-dev 2021-04-28 15:15

The graphics look amazing (though there could be some varaition in the background, but it's not a big deal). The player and enemy models look great! The music is really fitting the game, too. Well done!

PS: Btw. I really liked getting to level "--20" (these are two minus signs, btw.) with enemies destroying themselves offscreen xD. For a "real" release, though, I would prevent the player from getting into the negative range.

masaru 2021-04-28 15:41

@pd-dev Thanks you ! I had planned two or three different background, but I ended up doing this one during the last few hours and didn't have time or motivation to do more.

And thank you for testing this bug, I think I'm going to consider it an easter egg =p.

preda 2021-04-29 19:39

I was a bit confused at first but I figured out what I was supposed to do. Pretty simple I'm thinking with an infinite map. The only only thing that would've helped out would be shooting always in the direction of my clicks

masaru 2021-04-29 21:00

@preda Thank you =). Yes, it's an infinite map. Shooting in the direction of clicks would work, but to be honest, I only used the mouse click as shooting buttons because it was the easiest option, I would have preferred to use the keyboard for everything but that would have probably been more confusing.

willops 2021-04-29 22:07

Nice entry! Simple but fun

masaru 2021-04-30 10:00

@willops Thank you =)

lmb 2021-05-09 15:00

Some impressive stuff in here! Loved the enemy design, the variety of enemies, and how each enemy type looks and feels so unique! Well, graphics in general look very good. Music and sound also worked very well.

I found the game too difficult for my taste, and I think the main reason is because when I move my ship to the right, it gets closer to the right edge of the screen, and therefore I don't have enough time to react to incoming enemies and shots. Many games do the opposite: if you move to the right, you actually appear more to the left of the screen, so you can see more of what lies ahead. I this would work really good for your game!

I had some fun on the negative levels, too (going to the left) :laughing: It was easier, for sure!

Kudos! Very solid compo entry. Could be a _really_ nice space shooter with some additional work on balancing, controlling, and maybe some additional content.

dmitriy3342 2021-05-11 23:25

I liked music! I got interesting experience, thanks!

masaru 2021-05-16 20:01

@lmb : Thank you very much ! Camera is a never ending issue of my entries, this one isn't bugged, that's at least something. I did want to do the kind of camera you describe, but in the end, a non-bugged camera was good enough.

@dmitriy3342 : Thank you =)

kooky 2021-05-18 19:56

I love the low poly 3D models, the lighting and shadows, the lavafall texture, and the fact that my ship is right next to a wall. Kind of makes it feel like we're playing with toy spaceships.

I love the music. Very quirky and easy to listen to.

I also love the description you wrote! Very honest and fun. :) I love the part about you being open to the idea of players going the wrong way at the start!

Very nice entry!

masaru 2021-05-19 21:05

@kooky : Thank you very much =D
