This game could be a lot of fun, but its a bit chaotic to me

tractorfarm 2019-04-29 23:28

Overall, great jam game! Some specific feedback: +Great intro screen +Great music and graphics -Upgrades dont seem balanced

daggett 2019-04-29 23:34

Impressive visual quality and solid gameplay! Only downside was that collisions do seem a bit random, but that may be a learning thing.

temsei 2019-04-29 23:42

Looks and feels really, really good, but I feel like I could've used a little more direction rather than to just seemingly aimlessly shoot rocks until the level is over. Game feels amazingly polished though!

marcus-dubreuil 2019-04-30 03:00

As someone with Vertigo, I couldn't play this game for long but it looks great and the controls feel great!

danielk 2019-04-30 09:18

Pretty neat game! I really like it! The only thing I found is that if you fly straight really fast the red dots / packages won't catch up with you so you don't get any more health, maybe make them flying faster than the ship?

anstabo 2019-04-30 18:35

Controls feel great, found the way to never die, spin to win and spam fire ^^.

spooky 2019-04-30 18:39

@anstabo It's a a good tactic! :D

fluffy-kaeloky 2019-04-30 18:41

That's a really great entry ! Congratulations guys !

A couple things I could notice is that I seem to lose integretity a bit randomly, and that the beam cannon doesn't appear after buying it. I'm also not sure how to consistently gain ship integrity besides blowing up asteroids and randomly gaining some.

Otherwise, I love the feel of the game, and the controller support is a great plus !

spooky 2019-04-30 19:05

@fluffy-kaeloky Not sure why the beam isn't appearing :( we did map homing missiles and the beam to a secondary control (right click on mouse). But I'm glad you enjoyed it!

shadowhaxz0r 2019-04-30 19:46

Looks good! I would also like the pace to be a bit slower, the asteroids appear and move a bit to fast. Good sounds. Cool ideas with the upgrades !

boxedmeatrevolution 2019-04-30 20:46

It looked and felt great to play. Sound was the best out of any Ludum Dare game I've played yet (I especially liked the shooting sound). One issue was that it was hard to know which way I was moving because of the lack of a stationary reference--I felt like WASD didn't work correctly. Maybe having some "space dust" or something would help with this. I also would have liked some proper enemies, but I guess you didn't have time to get around to that.

garys 2019-04-30 20:53

Looks fantastic, but it did feel a little random in terms of action to outcome.

gludo 2019-04-30 20:57

Cool game ! Took me a while to realise the red orbs aren't bad ! aha

yvanor 2019-04-30 21:00

Looks very good, and it's very fun to play. However, it's very hard to keep enough hull integrity to buy upgrade.

Well done anyway !

tinykidtoo 2019-04-30 21:03

Man this game is hard but really fun. The music is a perfect fit for the chaotic atmosphere created by the controls. They are just hard enough to control to create a good level of challenge.

spooky 2019-04-30 21:07

@boxedmeatrevolution Maybe we could make a certain aggressive rock that floats towards you or something.

@shadowhaxz0r We will look into that on our post jam update to the game.

@garys Could you elaborate more? I'm interested to make improvements.

@gludo Oh no we did think that might be a possibility!

@yvanor Glad you enjoyed it I personally love hard games however we could implement an easier mode!

Thanks all for your feedback <3

spooky 2019-04-30 21:09

@tinykidtoo Awesome glad you enjoyed it! :)

garys 2019-04-30 21:13

Sure, just felt a little like all I could do was spam fire in random directions and aim for whatever asteroids were in view - I couldn't tell what was about to hit me so I didn't feel like I could make any meaningful decisions about movement.

spooky 2019-04-30 21:19

@garys Cheers, do you think a different asteroid type maybe one that came at you would improve game play purpose or maybe a way of warning when an asteroid is close?

cozmic 2019-04-30 21:23

I really enjoyed this! Nothing really to complain about.. the music is not my taste, but meh, that's really subjective. I love how the menu is displayed, really nice composition! Also the ingame look is really nice, at first I thought you wouldn't see that much out of that cockpit, but I think it's really the right amount for the game!

spartacouscous 2019-04-30 21:29

I love the UI !! I didn't like how chaotic it was, with asteroids hitting u without being able to see them. But all in all a great game

ghost-in-the-toast 2019-05-01 12:56

Very good game! Graphics are top notch and the music is superb! Couple of things I would change would be the drop rate for red orbs, and make it easier for the player to pick them up. On my first play through I wasn't able to purchase any upgrades because I wasn't able to collect enough orbs. In the later levels I would almost have enough for an upgrade and then I would get it hit and lose what I had collected. After that my dream for upgrading went out the window.

duke 2019-05-01 12:58

Nice implementation! Looks and sounds great. The core gemaplay functions are robust as well. Good job! Other than that, the game is pretty harsh towards the player. Asteroids spawn very close to you and I got hit several times without me noticing anything in front of me. It's very unclear if the debirs of destroyed asteroids damage you or not and the screen is cluttered with so much stuff, that reacting becomes very frustrating.

Also, I couldn't even afford one upgrade, because the first level already drained a lot of my integrety. So your theme integration (replace coins with hp) feels a little tacked onto the gamepley loop without balancing it out properly. A lot of games this time around make this exact mistake. I played three levels and didn't get one integrity repair kit from an asteroid. So the whole upgrade mechanic was completely unusable for me.

I think with a bit more variety in level to level gameplay and some balancing, this could be a fun game! :)

koolio 2019-05-01 15:51

So the asteroid spawning is very random, @andrew-neale implemented an origin shifting system (it prevents you from ever getting into the lighting/physics jitter/whobble range in the engine which is noticeable around at 2500+ and alot more so past 5000+ units away from the world origin @0,0,0) Unity will someday support a 64bit engine where large scale space games and fast movement speeds could be done without all this messy position shifting :D

So currently asteroids are spawned and moved around the ship if they go out of a certain distance from the player position they are re-positioned.... it's this random-ness, and that you can see them visually pop in and out due to them being recycled and reused in the origin shifting updates a bit too close to the player position. For a later update I'd like to go with a scene level based system, given the countdown timer is only going to allow you so much time at maximum speed to move from 0,0,0 things could be reset on the weapon upgrade or a new level mission screen while you play so many rounds in one scene that can be more designer made with possibility to add in more variation to the levels and maybe other enemies to combat without doing it with an origin shifting system.

elrobo 2019-05-02 07:23

Neat looking, but the game played at very poor framerate on my integrated video laptop. Wish it had some of the unity quality controls to tweak the resolution or other settings.

kilian-baptendier 2019-05-02 21:15

Hey ! It's actually pretty fun to destroy asteroids. Even if the Character controller is kind of "slippy", I find it quite enjoyable.

Your menu is perfect, so beautiful, I also like your FX on the canons: pretty simple and clear.

arkinrev 2019-05-14 01:10

I am a terrible pilot, but I had a lot of fun trying to navigate the chaos. Looked and sounded both good and complete. Nice job! (I was not good at flying, so my upgrades were on the low end.)
