Any plans for a web/Linux version?

ghost-in-the-toast 2019-04-30 02:49

Love the graphics here! Good job!

ryan-wine 2019-04-30 03:32

@mertios once i get some sleep ill try to get a linux build. the web version didnt work when i tried to build for itch, im assuming because it makes extensive use of streaming assets, but it was last minute.

ryan-wine 2019-04-30 03:35

@ghost-in-the-toast thanks! Nuc & King did some good work.

kichex 2019-04-30 03:52

A moddable game! Fascinating! do you have a modding guide for it??

ryan-wine 2019-04-30 04:31

@kichex i can prepare something tomorrow. Its partially moddable. The tileset can be replaced and tile properties redefined. The maps can be opened in the tiled map editor.the object layer is used to create enemies and other things. They can also be opened in notepad.

This game has a lot of potential and it feels very gamey. However, the main issue with it for me is the way zoomed out view. I feel like this kind of pixel scaling would have worked if my monitor were the same resolution as one of those IBM PCs from the early '90s that this looks like it came from. Alas, my monitor is 4K. I think you need to set your pixels per unit to 16 or 8 or something like that.

Regardless of that, it's a pretty hard platformer by my skill levels. Mind you, I'm not amazing at these games, but still. It looks to have a lot of potential, but I lost the will to keep on playing after a while of not making that much progress. I noticed and liked the way that shooting uses up your health, but I found it a bit hard to notice, especially with how tiny the UI was for me. Are there health packs or something later on? I couldn't seem to refill my ammo once it was depleted.

The moddable aspect is really cool for an LD game. I like that. Maybe it's not the thing to prioritise in this type of development, but it's still very cool. I don't think spending time on that is what caused the issues with your game, especially considering how quick it would be to fix the ones I've mentioned (and noticed). Overall, would be more fun if I could see what's going on with my old grandpa eyes, but well done!

The game is nice, sprites are nicely done so it's the ui, the gripes i have are with the background: it mixes too much with the colors in the foreground and make it harder to look at what's happening, maybe with just a different background the game graphics would improve dramatically, also i don't like the fact that when you fall you can see the lower edge of the tilemap, it's better to hide it ;)

hugonun 2019-04-30 18:29

Hard platformer, love it. I didn't manage to beat level 2, we have to strategically attack and run :)

copito 2019-04-30 21:26

I had fun with this game probably the one i've enjoyed most so far!

sakkia 2019-05-01 07:22

I think there should be some context or game mechanics to explain why the faery's attacks cost health, otherwise it feels like a normal 2D platform game with only 'each shot takes health' correlated to the theme. Game quality is good though

vertuga32 2019-05-01 09:59

The game is collected from different assets that are not compatible with each other. The gameplay is boring, standard. Another platformer, nothing new. I'm bored to play it. Why do you think I should buy (you sell it to me at the competition) this game? What is it about her that I choose it from a thousand similar ones?

I feel a lack of experience and a lack of understanding of how games are made. I recommend to read more about it. Learn game design. But basically you need to analyze the best platform and understand why they are.

The game consists of the following elements: - gameplay (control, mechanics, balance, systems, etc.) - history (setting, characters, events, history, texts, etc.) - picture (graphics, style, sounds, music, effects, etc.) - technologies (game engine, technologies used, instruments for playing a keyboard, gamepad, microphone, etc.) - overall quality (team experience, team size, ability to use technology, etc.)

Understand your game on this element. Understand the best platformers on these elements. Study, analyze and eventually you will understand why they are so good.

i love the design of the game. :hearts:

@kichex here ya go: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/44/faery-tales/faery-tales-modding-guide

ryan-wine 2019-05-02 00:29

@wfmg that is a fair point, ill have to add a check to zoom in the camera at over 2k resolutions. I didnt expect anyone to play the game in 4k :P

I haven't participated in this LD, so I cannot rate, but I can give feedback:

1. The art is fairly consistent, though some background assets look less polished than the characters and enemies. 2. There's a good variety of enemies on display here, which I enjoyed, however, some of their behaviours are erratic. For instance, the attacking dwarf seems to be able to fly to some extent, which made no sense to me. 3. I understand the mechanic of using health to shoot, but I must say I didn't find it particularly enjoyable or compelling. I did the whole first level avoiding contact. Seemed the best way to approach the level. In the second level, I attempted the same tactic where possible, but I failed 5 out of 5 attempts. 4. The second level was a little long with very few health pick ups, so it resulted in a lot of repetition of the early parts of the level, which grew monotonous for me. 5. As far as I can tell, there is no grace jump, which bothered me, as I sometimes missed jumps, either because the character "thought" it wasn't grounded, or because I would just already be airborne as I was leaving the platform.

Conclusion: Not a bad entry, but really rough around the edges.

It was an interesting game. I found that if I choose a smaller screen resolution that game didn't have that zoomed out look to it. I'm betting you left the sprite size at the default of 100 that Unity has. I really enjoyed the music and the graphics were well done. Except for the background picture, it seemed to clash with the foreground art. Congrats on completing the Jam!

Pixel art and music in SNES style. My favorites!! Congratulations for the game.

I also played a game. If you can, please try it, rate it and comment.

That teleport effect was awesome! I liked the level design and being able to time movements to defeat enemies with the drills. What I'd suggest as an improvement would be to make platforms accessible from below. So if I jump I can go through a platform and then land on it. It gets a little annoying to make a jump only to collide with a platform

Nice game!

black-potion 2019-05-02 14:03

A bit hard to understand at first, I was teleported without knowing why, died so fast because I shoot too much... after that I understood I had to shoot less  . didn't tried to mod the game but it's an awesome feature. I found the control a bit harsh (feary is really slow to jump) I think if you upgrade it, the game will be a lot smoother.

ryan-wine 2019-05-02 21:18

@adam-clayden Thanks! During development i didnt kill the players speed so youd teleport and instantly go flying off the platform. It was super disorienting.

I am working on fixing that. I had trouble with it registering onewayplatforms as ground correctly(jumping was really spotty), so i had to disable them to finish in time.

ryan-wine 2019-05-02 21:23

@black-potion thanks - Are you saying it takes the faery too long to get off the ground or she doesnt jump very much from a light press?

black-potion 2019-05-02 21:42

yeah too long to get off the ground I think.

rainetheglutton 2019-05-03 03:35

I like the implementation of the theme. It had me constantly analyzing whether it was worth attacking the enemy or just fleeing past them to stay alive. Assuming you made the assets everything looks really well done, except the foreground foliage which seemed to be a bit blurry.

Thanks for rating our game!
