Completed the game on my first playthrough :-) There's a few things that I didn't like so much though.
As far as I could see, there were no way to see what each option did before pressing it, like what resources it would add or remove. But I suppose that is intended.
The text are not the easiest to read, even though I could read the words it was not pleasant on my eyes. It does however fit the game :-)
Overall, it was pretty cool and I really liked the concept :-)
@jesper-k Thanks for playing! Those are definitely some valid points. When I first envisioned it, I hoped you would see what different interactions cost, as well as have flavor text to follow each action. As it goes with most Jams however, that turned out to be the icing on the cake - which we never got to, haha.
I'll be sure to review your title ASAP!

@jesper-k I completely agree with the font not being super easy to read. For the life of me I couldn't add any fonts into GameMaker and didn't have the patience to reinstall or try it on a different computer. That is definitely something that will be corrected when @doctormozart and I take a look back at this one.
Thank you for playing and leaving such a great comment! We definitely appreciate the feedback.
Fun game and did not die so that's a plus, back in the day I would play Oregon Trail day at school such a great game.

Brilliant! Took me straight back to playing Oregon Trail as a kid. The American Tail reference just sold it for me. Solid and fun for what it is!

Fun game. In the beginning, I was a bit confused about hunger and thirst. Wouldn't it make more sense to lose hunger and thirst as you eat or drink?
@cribin That would make much more sense, haha. At the point we realized that the way we'd built it didn't make much sense we didn't enough time left to change the system. We thought about changing the nouns as that would be a quick fix, but I'm still not sure what the opposite of hunger is... or thirst.
Thanks for the feedback.

That is a thing I have never understood, a lot of survival games does it like that where the Hunger and Thirst goes down overtime instead of up :-)
I really enjoyed the variety of the events; I never really knew what to expect next (how do fish roll dice?). The music is excellent and it's great that it changes when interactions occur. The missing text after encounters was noticeable (what happened when I drank from the pool?), but such is the nature of the time limit! Overall, a lot of fun seeing what strange, new things would happen on the Oregon Trail!
@ecmjohnson Thanks for your kind words. It was a fun little project to work on, and I hope after the Jam rating is over that we will have the drive to go back and polish up a few areas that are lacking.
Still mad impressed with your entry. All the best!
Nice work - very much like the Oregon Trail I remember. Good job with resource management. Combat was a little confusing, but overall very fun and funny.
That was pretty charming. Managed to beat it on my first try and avoid both cholera and dysentery. Are the encounters preset or are there other random ones?
I would have liked some follow up text to go with the net change. It's not always clear *why* I'm gaining/losing something, and that bit of flavor text is important to providing context to the world I believe.
The gaining/losing hunger is a bit weird; it's not immediately clear if I want to gain hunger or lose it.
It also might be nice to get high level probabilities for some riskier outcomes. This does tip your hand a bit, but it lets players make smarter choices coming in blind, and allows you to tweak the odds without it seeming completely random to the player.
Those minor nitpicks aside, it's a solid implementation! I had fun playing and would love to see this expanded in a post-compo version.
@silkworm-sweatshop Glad you managed to avoid cholera and dysentery! (Writes in notebook that I definitely should have had that included) The encounters were preset in the end. The hope at first was to have them randomized, but time was our worst enemy.
Thanks for playing!
@fireslash I absolutely agree with your assessment. If there was one thing above all else I wish we had time to have implemented, it would be a little flavor text after each button option. Hunger / Thirst is definitely an issue, I think it should definitely be that you GAIN hunger / thirst as time passes, otherwise, it doesn't make sense.
Giving the player any information also definitely should have been done so they could make smarter decisions. A post-jam version will definitely be done.
The game was fun to play, it reminded me of the humor in Undertale.
@PlugWorldG Thanks! It definitely took a lot of inspiration from Undertale. My only wish was we had time to implement reactions based upon your button choice. Would have made it even more so.
I'll be sure to give your game a go ASAP.

@fattori Thank you for playing!! I definitely didn't make the game very forgiving when you run into a situation where you can't do any of the three available actions which is something I would like to work on. Protip, if you bow to the chicken it'll give you an egg! Also the Fishzard is quite bad at dice.
Very neat little game. I enjoyed it. Good job for finishing the adventure and balancing!

I liked it. I suspect the encounters are fixed, becasue they relate to the map locations? Interesting choices and options. I could have used a little more text to describe the encounters and the options so that it could feel like I was making a more informed choice rather than just clicking. It was a little hard to read. The thing you test at the end is mettle, not metal. Graphics were cute, and music good (especially in that it changed during encounters). Nice work!
In the end I was low on everything, I thought I would not make it but then the last point apperared I and barely made it through. The music sounded somehow addictive, idk. I liked this little adventure.
It works prety well, I realy enjoyed playing this game until the end.
I like how you see your player moving on the map along the path like a common map cinematic. Maybe its to easy but I can understand that its not that easy for every player so its ok for me. The graphics and the sound works together like a charm but maybe the font that you used is a bit difficult to read in a full screen mode? Thanks for the tutorial by the way, it realy help.
Nice job guys!
@dob Thanks for playing. The encounters are definitely fixed - originally hoped to randomize them, but that didn't end up happening. The text is definitely a complaint we've gotten a few times now - we definitely should have gone for something a little easier on the eyes.
Thanks for pointing out the spelling error, I laughed just now realizing what we wrote. My partners response was "What if you have a sword? Funny accidental pun".
@maximbegunov I'm glad you made it through! Thanks for the positive feedback on the music!
Fun and nice looking game, but i would like it to be a bit more clear as to what every option did and the death less sudden
@glorious-kittens I definitely agree with you there. I find the deaths a little irritating. I would have preferred if we had set the death screen AFTER you made some choice. Also, knowing what your choices meant ahead of time would have helped with them - at least not knowing helps us with our Undertale vibe.
Thanks for playing, and your feedback.

What a fun little game! I love the way the theme is implemented and allows for some strategy, even if you can't tell what results your choices will have. I didn't come across any deaths, so I can't comment on that. I defeated the Baddie at the end, but felt like there wasn't enough of a celebratory indicator that I had won, just a Restart button. The encounters were creative and I enjoyed the game!
I really liked the game! however i think the sacrifice theme was not the main concept in the game, other than that i really had fun playing it :)
@cigsandflowers Thanks for the feedback. I have to agree with you on the theme. When we first started working on the game, I was completely convinced that idea of losing resources was a good examples of the theme - as time went on however, I started to feel it really didn't fit as strongly as I thought it should. No time to self doubt during a jam however, so we pushed through.
I'll be sure to give your game a go in the next couple days! :rocket:
