I hate giving bad ratings and reviews, but this was just too obtuse for me to understand how to play.

skyc 2018-08-15 02:57

@ratstail91 You are forming a hand of card on every row, and clear a line with a hand of scoring poker hand.

skyc 2018-08-15 03:23

@ratstail91 Which part of the game you find is hard to understand?

ratstail91 2018-08-15 03:33

@skyc Any of it, sorry.

skyc 2018-08-15 03:42

@ratstail91 Do you know how to form a hand in a Poker game (like straight flush)?

alexrose 2018-08-16 08:59

I think I understood the premise (although I dunno what you classify as a straight given there's only two numbers of card), however I was occasionally a bit confused on why the game wouldn't accept my hands. Like in this screenshot it appears to me that I have a full house on the bottom row and a four of a kind on the third row. pokerhand.png

Cool game though, interesting concept! Decent music. Gratz on your second LD!

greenbluebit 2018-08-16 09:04

Interesting idea but I agree, it's theme is not clear and the design itself is not very clean. Maybe some better introduction, or difference in the types of "cards" other than the color matches.. I really don't know.

skyc 2018-08-16 09:16

@alexrose Sorry for confusing you. It was because the design was not meant to include all Poker hand types. I only included **Straight**, **Flush**, and **Five of a Kind**. The Poker logic and types of hand are changed to make the line to be visually distinct for clearing. Also, having all kinds of Poker hand included will make the line almost always cleared with four kind of cards. Straight is like: King -> Ace -> King -> Ace -> King or Ace -> King -> Ace - King -> Ace

skyc 2018-08-16 09:18

@greenbluebit The purpose of abstract card block is to make the individual blocks not being too taxing for the players to play. (since it is in real time)

I am not a Poker player and I just can't keep track of all Poker hands and cards in the game.

skyc 2018-08-16 10:00

@greenbluebit I agree a better tutorial is needed, but I didn't have enough time to make a proper tutorial.

greenbluebit 2018-08-16 10:28

@skyc Completely understood, it was just my feedback as to why I at least, had trouble getting into it. Regardless, good work.

rend 2018-08-16 10:44

I like the premise of tetris and poker, but it was hard for me to get the straight/flush patterns at the beginning. But I guess what makes it too hard to play is the control with the mouse. I understand you had to adapt it since you also have an Android build, but drag and drop might not be the best option to go here. If you miss the piece and click on the board, it will go down directly and it happened to me like a dozen of times. It could be great also to be able to rotate the pieces. With a bit more polishing I'm sure it could be super addictive.

skyc 2018-08-16 10:52

@rend I have considered a keyboard control scheme after testing the game a lot, and I will change the design a bit. (I knew the touch control feels really buggy) But I worried with rotating a two-card long block will hover in the space and slow down the gameplay, but I will try it. Why not!

skyc 2018-08-16 12:45

@ratstail91 @alexrose @greenbluebit @rend All of your opinions are precious, love to hear more from anyone. I am going to work on a post jam version of the game (full tutorial, keyboard control, rotation system, and better animation and visual). stay tuned!

mrsylar59 2018-08-17 09:58

I liked the idea but didn't played for long: I don't knwo why but I had the music in only one ear which made the thing really unpleasant to play. The music seemed nice though. The rules of the game are pretty hard to grasp at first. Great job overall!

skyc 2018-08-17 10:02

@mrsylar59 Thank you for your play! Didn't notice the sound issue because I used speakers when developing the game.

kack3y 2018-08-17 11:15

Hi @skyc,

I agree with everyone here, very hard to understand. But it's common with LD games :p

For me the hardest thing to understand is the red cards... I don't understand if I can mixed them with black or not. Plus I don't understand what the dual color cards are doing.

Also, I have a question for you. If I fill completely a line without doing a good hand, is my line totally fucked :p ?

Anyway, good idea to mix tetris and poker (you should have proposed this for the LD41 theme ^^)

Good job !

skyc 2018-08-17 11:38

@kack3y

The red mixing with the black on a line cannot be flush, but the line can be straight or five of a kind.

The dual color cards with black and white switch the rank, and the one with red and black switch the suit.

mrjorts 2018-08-17 14:06

It's a great concept, and I like card games and puzzle games, so I enjoyed it, but I had some of the same trouble as others have mentioned. Once I read your comments I was able to play the game, but I still think it could be made clearer. I think that having A and K would be more immediately readable when trying to parse the screen, and having a couple more example images of hands on the title screen would help to get a feel for the logic.

It seems like audio is only coming out of the left channel in the windows build, by the way.

player-2 2018-08-17 14:18

The tetris style of dropping cards was interesting, yet not overly unique. The graphics made it hard to distinguish between each card type, maybe having a number of image on each card to make it more obvious? The audio is quite good, but the overall fun of the game is limited because it feels like i'm playing a strict Tetris game - which deletes a line once you get five in a row horizontally. It is nice that you have included touch friendliness and done an android build.

skyc 2018-08-17 14:22

@player-2 The white joker can switch rank and the red joker can switch suit, so you can make combos.

team-infernus 2018-08-18 00:01

Your control scheme was a bit cumbersome and your graphics were a bit hard to decipher what was going on.

skyc 2018-08-18 08:22

@team-infernus Thanks! I will fix that after the jam. Keyboard control is much better for my game, and I think adding a letter on the card will help.

johnnwfs 2018-08-21 00:14

Took a while to figure it out, but started getting correct combo's to clear lines. I do think the blocks are too abstract - there seems to be enough room, why not throw in a K, A etc.? I started getting confused as the blocks filled up. All that said, this fits the theme spot on and it may be that playing it longer would ease the frustration of the abstract cards. Pretty good job and while the music started getting annoying (after ~ 5 minutes) it was a neat little ditty that fit well with the game - if expanding I'd suggest getting some longer music tracks. Overall a good job in my opinion, even if the mechanic is difficult to pick up!

skyc 2018-08-21 11:32

@johnnwfs Thanks for the review! The abstract blocks are really difficult to grasp at the beginning but I played it too long to not notice the problem.

2018-09-03 16:32

Challenging game! I included it in my compilation video series of the Ludum Dare 42 compilation video series, if you’d like to take a look. :) https://youtu.be/CCzYoSZIQ24

Interesting app. I learned how to play poker thanks to an app. it was long ago and I would like to remember the name of it to play again to feel again a child. I was watching a lot of live casinos and wanted to be a professional poker player. I grew up and I started to think about other jobs but poker remained in my mind. Now I am an accountant and my hobby is to play poker. Every time I need to relax after work I play poker with my friends online or just go to a casino. I have a golden rule that I follow, it is very important to know that playing on big bets isn't worth it. _______ https://www.ninjacasino.com/ca/new-games

It's a good alternative to games that are offered for free like this. I recently did https://melbets.in/ here betting and now I want to create my own betting channel which will broadcast positions as a poker game. To be able to see the online player.
