This game looks beautiful and the music really fits the game! It's not really clear what the objective is, but it's surely nice to explore the well-made area, good job!

2018-08-14 00:11

You need to opt out of graphics. These are bought from the unity asset store.

**You've also rated over 45 games (make that 53 games 5 minutes after this post) in the 2 hours that the jam ended.** Come on guys, really?

re: your "update" - you have 0 karma for feedback. Maybe you're not leaving comments but I saw your 'rated games' number go up by over 1 game per minute for a good 10 minutes so I don't buy your 'update'.

paulo-augusto 2018-08-14 00:16

Very nice man

2018-08-14 00:23

You've submitted almost 50 ratings in the first two hours of the ratings period, all while the site has barely been functional for a large chunk of that time. You're also using graphical assets you purchased from the Unity store and haven't opted out of the Graphics category. What you're doing is extremely shady.

darkguardsman 2018-08-14 00:31

Game looks good but doesn't seem to work well. Movement is odd, animations for movement plays while harvesting, logs can't bee seen through grass, and building doesn't seem to do anything. Over all the game seems to be unfunctional

iloveyourface 2018-08-14 00:32

Nice work for your first LD!

The game looks nice and seems like a cool concept. The movement was unbearably slow, I was always stuck on the terrain and the trees would just fall through the ground. Is your character using a capsule collider?

pedro-m-marangon 2018-08-14 00:37

The graphics are awesome, such as the music. But I don't understand what I need to do in this game. Also, I don't

popdaddygames 2018-08-14 00:39

Hello Commenters! Thanks for playing! I addressed your concerns about Graphics and Votes in the main post. Thanks for helping to keep the Ludum community honest, positive, and awesome! :)

max6333 2018-08-14 00:40

Lots of stuff looks bought, so you should opt out of those categories. Gotta give it to you though, you put it together nicely.

sciman101 2018-08-14 00:40

You should probably opt out of the graphics category since you didn't make the graphics, yourself

firebelley 2018-08-14 01:02

I think this could have been much better if the actions were made quicker. I felt that it took to long to chop down trees and move the logs around. Also, I didn't really see anything that fit the theme.

The game looks gorgeous though. Even if the assets were bought, the world is put together beautifully.

thecommonthug 2018-08-14 01:11

Looks great. Shout out to the unicorn pool floatie.

jlv 2018-08-14 01:34

Great looks and great mood for quite a relaxing game. Sadly, there is no surprise to keep the whole thing fresh, and carrying the logs makes you slow to the point of boredom. To me, you should make it easier for the player to walk around your beatifully crafted game world, because despite it being made from Unity assets, you definitely nailed the feels and looks of a late-summer forest.

logicon211 2018-08-14 02:32

I'm unsure where the theme comes into play. The game looks great, but the walking speed is so slow I couldn't get anywhere.

popdaddygames 2018-08-14 02:48

Thanks for the comments! I made a last minute decision to bump down all the physics and mechanic stats-- IE I made the player slower, carrying a log slows you down more, the jump is lower, you can't throw the logs as far, and it takes more strikes to break apart trees.

Based on this feedback, I think it would be best for me to roll back those stats to where I had them during development and testing: I let the player move way faster, jump way more smoothly, and have fun shooting logs all over the map!

I'll get an update posted first thing in the morning that has these changes rolled back.

Thanks for playing, and I hope you come back to see it with the update in the morning! :)

@Jlv I really appreciate your feedback! My wife worked tremendously hard on the game world and layout. We opted not to design the assets ourselves for this particular jam because we really wanted to work on learning some of the other tools. We didn't have any prior experience with the Terrain tool in Unity- of which she started learning approximately 6 hours into the Jam. It was a phenomenal experience, and I can't wait to take what we learned from that into the next Jam!

What's really cool about the Terrain tool is how you can fine tune all of the details of the trees, grass, and other landscape elements (including the texture painting) to the point where it can really feel like a real world. We've had issues in previous games where it's really tough getting everything to fit together cohesively-- so that was our major focus: trying to figure out how to make everything cohesive.

You mention there are no surprises- but quite the contrary we put a lot of little easter eggs and surprises all over! Unfortunately, however, I believe my last minute player control changes may have made them really hard to 'get to' in the sense that it would take a tremendous amount of time. Like I said in the other comment, I will roll back those changes so that you have more mobility and freedom to explore. For example... though the goal is to chop trees-- try chopping some of the other things in the world, there are some unique events! One example: the gong by the pond!

Again- thank you very much for providing this feedback. I can see that we have already upset some people based on using assets we have previously purchased, but despite that we are tremendously proud of what we were able to do during this Jam. It was a very positive and productive gamedev experience for us- and we definitely were able to calmly complete this Jam more efficiently than previous jams.

Thanks again! :)

As the ludum dare rule's says :

"Is using the Theme required? Officially no, you are not required to use the Theme."

I think this game was a personnal challenge, like you said, learning new tools. Its ok to join the event to stay motivated.

the voting probably doesnt matter for you

popdaddygames 2018-08-14 04:54

@tontonpizza Thanks for your feedback. I don't agree with either of your proposals: For one the theme is interpretive, and in this case you're just not interpreting the theme in the same way we interpreted it. For two: the voting is an important part of everyone's submission, as it helps to indicate a general public perspective on the effort given in a particular submission.

Some notes: This is actually our 4th Jam-- I moved over from another account so that I could have the name that actually matches my other Social Media presences.

Thank you for your feedback.

Good luck during this jam! :)

sorry if i sounds rude, i may use the wrong words since i m not fluent in english. 2 or 3 people here seem to dont understand the game at all or figure out how it is related to the theme ; an anonymous guy was even more agressive lol.

I just remind that the theme is not mandatory but still, i dont see the purpose of the game.. honestly, i can't dive deep like half an hour in a game when i don't understand what's happening. I can only vote for the mood category. we can talk about the game in private if you dont want to reveal too much publicly

zicboy 2018-08-14 05:28

Great game!

popdaddygames 2018-08-14 05:30

@tontonpizza Thanks for your feedback and continued response!

I absolutely agree-- the 2 most major flaws are a dulled play experience due to dropping all the interaction stats, and also not demonstrating how to progress the thematic goals. In our next Jam-- we will try to create a bit more of a faux tutorial for showcasing what the intended goal is.

Thanks for evaluating the game, I hope at least that you can appreciate the tremendous effort it took to tie this all together in just 3 days, despite some of the more glaring flaws. We had a blast, and as always we can't wait to take what we learned here into the next project! :)

hdmmy 2018-08-14 05:58

Looks great, but there is no objective, I was confused when playing.

catchthefloaty 2018-08-14 06:32

controls definitely feel like they were thrown onto a animation set that wasnt intended. character was constantly in a glitched state. lack of any real goal took alot of interest out of it. Despite being an asset pack, the layout of forest was well done, level designer had a real eye for the layout.

matt-fabius 2018-08-14 06:43

I loved the art and environment design. The gameplay was a little buggy in parts with logs falling through the ground, and I feel like it could use some more indication that you are successfully chopping down a tree (since some of them took a good 8 whacks or so). But other than that, it's really unique from the other games I've been seeing and I enjoyed just walking around and playing it like a walking sim.

bredera 2018-08-14 08:32

besides from the amazing assets that where bought the music is also very nice and appropriate for the game, however the movement and gamplay are implemented in a weird way, it feels very floaty.

Good Effort!

I really appreciate you providing feedback and insight! Because you all voiced your opinion, and it was an accurate critique, we have fixed the physics issues that we made the last minute decision to change, and believe that the experience is -significantly- better for it.

There are still some trees that fall through the ground-- that's an unfortunate consequence of how we generated the levels. We added a bit of pop to combat this, but there are still some trees throughout the map that start too far below the horizon line to prevent falling. Thanks for your input and helping us out!

Here's the Update text: UPDATE 0940 14 AUG 2018 - Due to overwhelming feedback: we have rolled back the physics changes and freed up the players movement! You can now move like we originally intended, and also have the ability to throw logs much further again. Have fun! :)

raivk 2018-08-14 17:45

That game sure has a great mood and feel to it ! Quite calm and relaxing, congrats !

nam-nguyen 2018-08-14 17:56

The game portraits a weak intepretation of the theme. I think just some small fix it could more or less matches the game, but I like it this way. It wouldnt score high for theme though but I thoroughly enjoyed everything else. I think you guys did a good job at bundling everything together to get such a pleasant in-game experience, it looks very promising as a bigger post-jam game. Keep it up!

awix 2018-08-15 07:38

A good game idea, the music should be improved. The graphics are good. Try our game too, maybe you'll like it)

popdaddygames 2018-08-17 10:47

@Awix You clearly did not try the game. The music is definitely one of the best parts. You just commented to drag attention to your game.

2018-08-17 20:48

It's good visually at the first look but when it comes to gameplay, it's totally not clear, you don't know how much ressources you got, how much "campfires and torches" cost, the hitbox doesn't works well for trees, character glitches sometimes and the axe goes trough his entire body. And the graphics let's talk about them : they aren't yours ! it's from the unity asset store so you should opt out for graphics. I think that's not a good game to play, not fun at all.
