In my experience using dots "." as an empty space when displaying grids on the command line works better than neutral characters such as 0 or N - you can see what's what at a glance :)

Great concept, but how do I move units? /move isn't enough?

Hi there,

I really wanted to play with your game, I like these kinds of games, but there is just simple not enough information to be able to play it.

* First of all, commands are not case insensitive, this is a huge mistake in my opinion. * I've been sitting here trying to give commands to my troops, but no matter what I enter as the coordinates of my troops, it doesn't accept it. What is the correct syntax of coordinates ? * It would've been nice to use a monospace font for the terminal-like window, it's really bad for the eye to observe the map, but without equal width and height characters * I think you should also log the player's input into the window.

Tag me if you decide to fix these things, as I believe it's a fun concept, but in its current state, it is unplayable :(

Currently working on fixing the above issues, 1 second ladies and gentlemen.

darylsteak 2018-04-24 10:05

@tthe @niksorvari @pavel-smejkal

Alrighttttt. I tried my best to fix the issues above and I hope that you guys can actually play the game now.

Id like to thank you guys for telling me what problems there are so I can work on them. (special one to tthe)

Id also like to apologize to anyone who has tried but could not play the game because of the previously stated problems.

Enjoy!

Funny concept ! Gave me a smile c:

It does need some more work to make the game feel a little bit more intuitive, but the concept is really nice. Perhaps not for everyone, but I happen to love terminals ;)

riddhee-dutta 2018-04-24 14:36

The concept is nice and different man, great job. Feel free to drop a review at our game https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/boomball

I liked this, even though I know it's probably not everyone's cup of tea. Due to the nature of the game, it feels a little like a hacking game and that's no bad thing. After a bit of playing, I started to get my head around the different tactics possible. At its core, this is a great sim, if you're willing to put the initial time into it. Great work.

I really respect your decision to make a text game, since it is not very popular nowadays, yet I believe there are still fans of this genre among LD competitors. The idea is really awesome, strategy and text based game. I wouldn't have thought of that at all.

I had a hard time trying to play this game since I couldn't easily parse things with my eyes. I don't know if it possible but could the ascii be colored in the game? (I know it is possible on normal terminals though). Colors would really help a lot in my opinion. Another thing, as mentioned above, try to use easily distinguishable chars such as '.' or '_' for empty locations. Finally, in terminal, it is common to press up to navigate through past commands which would be helpful. Otherwise, I really like the idea, and hope to see it more polished.

darylsteak 2018-04-25 08:10

@Yetman Hey presto! I have changed the empty locations into "-", sadly clickteam fusion does not allow (or atleast I think so) individual letters have their colours changed without affecting the whole screen. Nevertheless I hope you enjoy it better with the new map.

glorious-kittens 2018-04-25 10:51

I took some time to figure out what to do, but it's a great concept.

yetman 2018-04-25 11:52

@darylsteak Thank you, that looks much better. I explored the map for a while then I played a few turns, but at one point the enemy turn took forever. The game was not "Not-Responding" but I couldn't move anymore for nearly 5 minutes. I wonder if it has to do the AI computations. For the sake of reproducibility, The 4 moves I did was: Move 500 from E3 Up (twice) then Move 500 from D3 Up (twice).

darylsteak 2018-04-25 12:03

Huh, Ai might be buggier than I though.

Ok, fixed (fine, disabled, never rly was important) what I think as causing this to occur, hopefully wont happen again.

Thx @Yetman for letting me know

After this is over I might just do a major AI overhaul on a later date

merrow 2018-04-25 13:47

Reminds me on the good old telnet games, nice idea!! But I unfortunately didn't get warm with the command inputs, shortcuts for repetitive commands, case-insensitiveness etc. would be nice.

jlv 2018-04-25 14:15

Cool game, the various actions are doable with simple and easy to remember commands (which would beneifit from being case-insensitive), and the writing is enjoyable. However, during my whole playthrough, the ennemies never moved and inch, and past a certain time (after having input a location where I had no troops), the move command stopped working. I would be interested in playing this game after a potential AI rework so let me know !

2018-04-25 14:27

I think not having to type /Map would do a lot for player comfort (remove the command and just update and show both maps side-by-side after each move).

darylsteak 2018-04-26 07:06

Noted, will be done, will also take some time

PS: Uh, few months since I got another main project, I will gladly pass on the code and permission to anyone wanting to further push this game tho. Sorry.

diego-manarim 2018-05-05 15:39

I loved the style of your game, it's amazing to see more games in an old school style! I only had a little difficulty finding myself on the board, but I think with limiting lines it would be easier to find.

Congratulations for the game!
