Haha! I love it. Reminds me of "The Narrator is a Dick"
Yeah, how to get over the first gap?
A small update above of how to get over some of the gaps!
Interesting game, enjoyed playing it. You're obviously super creative and you got me to chuckle a couple of times :smile_cat:
Things I liked: * The hand-drawn art style was fantastic. Lucas character art was a special highlight, and you have a cool way of drawing clouds. * I had fun discovering the jump mechanics on my own. Actually I don't think you did a bad job avoiding bugs at all - the whole thing worked better than many platformers I've played. * The music, too, was pretty good even on a short loop. Music is usually my "thing" but it definitely added to the mood of this one.
Things that were ok * Low brow humor, profanity, etc ... kinda felt cringey like a bad stand up comedy gig in parts, but it also added to the mood a lot. * Random jump-cuts and loss conditions (press enter to lose?) sort of added to the humor, but the whole thing basically screamed "I'm bitter about Lucas" to me. In which case, if this was a humor thing, a slightly better option might have been something like: choose how you want to die (choice of various insane methods to kill the onscreen character). The way it worked out - especially since (AFAIK) the game has no win condition - it's weird.
Ideas for next time * A visual novel is VISUAL, not audible. Cool story but it was entirely told through narration, not graphics. * Try pacing the game so the first jump is not the hardest one. Make the first challenge a player encounters super easy and the last one near-impossible. * Platformer sound effects are pretty much a must. Even a short jump sound is helpful.
Nice game! I loved the art style. The hand drawn visuals and the human-made sound for the gun were both pretty great, and definitely added to the comedic vibe. I spoiled myself with some of the endings, (not to spoil them for other commenters, but they were pretty creative!). It would have been cool to have a few more options to disobey/beat the narrator. I also expected the narrator's story to have some impact on the game world, but it ended up feeling very separate from the game itself. All that said, nice work! Very cool to know that everything was made from scratch!
I really liked the hand colored art style. Some of the jumps are really long for a game that isn't really a hardcore platformer and could just checkpoint respawn you nearer to the jump you died in rather than the restarting.
Hope you recovered everything else on your computer okay, sounds like that super sucked.
Took me a minute to figure out that you could double jump, but the platforming ended up pretty trivial afterwards. Amusing end with the narrator being annoyed about being ignored. Even though the shooting mechanics didn't seem to be used, placing them on Z and X felt pretty awkward when movement is with A and D. Very unique art style though, it was cool to see!
The hand drawn art style was really fun, I also love the gun SFX. Thank you for making this.
Playing this gave me an idea on where you could find more ideas for this sort of thing.
If you haven't or don't know about it then check out the Big Lez Show on YouTube and you will see what I mean :)
The gun controls are a bit confusing and the audio can sometimes lag or clip with the intro audio if you die in the middle of narrator talking in game.
Other than that I loved it, up the good work :))
If you could do me the honors of reviewing my game that would be awesome :))

Unfortunately there were two problems that made it rather difficult to properly play the game, both occurring at pretty much the same time every time I tried it (twice, to be exact):
- after 30 seconds or so, the narrator would get extremely quiet and I couldn't understand a thing
- shortly after, the game got stuck for a few seconds, after which I think I was beneath the floor, and could only kill myself
It does seem like a fun idea though, and the art style is nice. The general tone of the game too is quite nifty. I think I'd like to see a full playthrough video.
Interesting game liked the special style of graphics. Regarding to the narration I found it not very interesting but the overall idea about narrators which work against the player - I like that very much, it reminded me of The Stanley Parable. In regards to mobile if you want to really work on a bigger port of it, I would just expand the possible endings and work a bit on the audio quality. But the concept overall is a good start especially with this style :D
Liked the hand-drawn visuals. Too bad technical issues interfered with the completion of this, I would have liked to have played further. Nice job!
I really enjoyed the hand-drawn graphics. Even the narrator's humor isn't the sort of humor I usually go for, it all added together to the mood. I didn't realize you could double-jump, however, which made the first part of the game more frustrating than fun.
Also, sometimes the audio became unexpectedly loud, but I suppose you can always finetune that later. Good work!
Loved the visuals! Really interesting idea for the jam.
Had some things like others had - music would drown out the narrator a bit. Also the game starts in windowed mode but is bigger than the screen so when I got up to the part for 'press enter to die', I couldn't see the follow since my task bar covered it. Pressing alt-enter to go fullscreen just resulted in a black window.
Well done! I dig the direction you took with the art and how it meshed with the music :D I also like the idea of mixing the character progression with the Narrator. That's a a good amount of content for a weekend! Great work!
I liked the art, I don't know what to do in the game and I always fall in the hole!
