Nice work for your first Ludum Dare! I felt a bit disoriented though with the constant spinning and that made it hard to control but overall I think its an interesting take on a classic and the fact you put it together in 8 or 9 hours speaks to your development side. Keep it up!

giardi 2017-04-25 22:10

The idea is good, but is so hard to control the snake, and the camera gave me dizziness.

cottontshirtz 2017-04-26 01:10

This looks and feels so much better than my first LD, keep up the good work! I like the look of the low-poly world. A way you could maybe smooth out the camera movement is to draw a line between the center of the cube and the snake's head and put the camera along that line some distance out. This would allow the player to look over the edge of the cube as they approach it. Then to avoid the jump when the player moves you can have the camera Lerp between where it was one move ago and it's current position by the amount of time between moves.

@blankets-mcgee @giardi @cottontshirtz Thanks for the feedback, really appreciate it :)

harry-jacobs 2017-04-26 10:44

@cottontshirtz Ran out of time trying to get the camera to be smoother but definitely something I will look to fix, thanks for the ideas!

dextreon 2017-04-26 21:07

Hey Mate! It's been also my first ludum! The idea is great, but try to improve the camera movement it makes me feel crazy, also the control it's a little bit hard. Overall good job!

This was incredibly novel. I didn't expect it to be very good at first, but as I went on, I realized that it felt really cool to play a voxel snake.

The game started to get stressful as time went on, and beating levels (I only fully completed through level 2, because of the difficulty) sometimes felt more like a feeling of "relief" than "success". This was mostly because of a few reasons; dying usually didn't feel like my fault, and that's for a few reasons. First of all, the controls sometimes felt slow. Between pressing "left", you might have to wait a fraction of a second before pressing "right". I'm not positive if this was really the case, but it felt like it. Also, obstacles often felt unavoidable when shifting from one side of the world to another. Sometimes you would only be 1 or 2 "blocks" away from an obstacle before you could actually see it.

Now that I've gotten that out of the way, I should comment about everything that I loved about the game. First of all, it was novel. It felt like it added something new and fresh to an old game, and was successful in doing so. Also, the graphics were nice, and fit the game well. Finally, I can't explain how much I love the holes going through the world. It added an extra sort of "dimension" that the game benefited from.

Overall, I think you did a great job, especially considered the time that you had. I would love to see you make a more refined post-compo version later. Thanks and good job!

@chaseplays Thanks so much! Think I'm going to spend some more time on this to refine it. Definitely going to try and make the camera movement better. Also you're right about the turning delay - will try and make that a bit less clunky. Really helpful feedback, thanks :)

I love this game. It simple and fun to play. And the camera was no problem for me. Well done.

But please give the game some music.

red-fan-games 2017-05-01 03:39

Camera is disorienting.

nickavv 2017-05-01 03:52

I thought this was awesome. Great twist on a classic. The first time I went through a tunnel made me say "woah" out loud. It was a little disorienting but nothing I couldn't adjust to. I think the main difficulty for me was in how reactive the snake felt to your inputs. It seemed like there was a bit of delay before turning and that often got the better of me. Great work though!

spacedoubt 2017-05-01 03:55

Very cool take on a classic. I like the concept a lot. It's a bit too difficult. Maybe a larger cube or a slightly higher camera angle. Some way to give you a little more time to react to obstacles. Nicely done! For another take on the same game, check out Snake on a Plane: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/38/snake-on-a-plane!

I have now also rated your game.

occultone 2017-05-01 08:40

I played this on Livestream a Few Days Ago: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uiOC3F43xF0

Really great twist on a classic game, but man was that camera disorienting. Great job on the tunnel! A very solid entry!

jazzpah 2017-05-01 08:46

Very good game. Very creative and simple to play. The camera follows quite well, and had limited problems on that account. The holes in the ground made for an interesting dynamic. Sometimes it is hard to see any stones on other sides and can therefore come as a surprise. Not necessarily a bad thing, as a tactic to counter this would be having the snake on the sides of the map, when going to new sides.

blaster391 2017-05-01 08:59

Prettiest snake game I've played! Like the concept of 3d, just had trouble sometimes going over a side of the planet instantly into scenery.

A bit of smoothing with the camera movement would have been appreciated. But doing so much on such a limited time is impressive.

julianeder33 2017-05-01 11:59

Nice Game! Especialy for your first try! But it is a little bit to fast in my opinion. I am also working with Unity: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/38/space-ship-andromeda Try it out if you want!

jaytord 2017-05-01 13:30

First I liked some new for snake things like worm hole to other side of the map, but then i realized that in 2d you had to turn, otherwise you will bump in the wall and there you can spin around any edge as much as you want. I still died quite a lot, but it's mostly because of camera >_< Idea is good, but current version needs few alterations. I wish you will have more time for your next LD game

verter 2017-05-01 21:46

The lack of music needs another mention. Apart from that and the camera, good job with this approach of a classic!

dejvo 2017-05-03 19:09

Well, This game is a good idea in head, but it kindof missed the mark for me. the camera was a bit off( but i doubt, that it is possible to improve that) and there should be a smooth movement.

That being said, I am really surprised, at how much you've managged to get done, and it is far better than mine :D to good job on that :)

local-minimum 2017-05-16 17:23

Interesting but hard game! Especially, I found it quite evil that the second level started you running into a block. In general I think this could become a really addictive pass-time game. There are some stuff I would consider in that case:

* Make snake speed depend on length so that it starts slower on each level and then becomes increasingly hard * Actually give the player a fixed amount of lives and let them start from level 1 afterwards to raise the stakes. * The camera should probably be ahead of the rotation when the snake is about to turn the corner * Possibly also add a bit of slowdown on each turn. * Add music or something! At least a little positive sound for each block you eat.

I would also say that you made it really hard for us players to have to download the game waiting for google to zip it and such. Consider some site to host it or at least give us a pre-zipped thing to download (the names weren't readable for which version was which on the folders).

Nice game all and all though!

feips 2017-05-16 17:29

I licked it but should have definetly been music.
